View Full Version : What Do You Do To Get Involved In Your Community?

Pretty much, here is the deal.

I want to get involved with some kind of community organization and help those who need help. I want to volunteer and do something proactive and give of myself. I just feel this calling right now and want to know what do any of you all on the Board do?

Sure, I could go and look at websites (which I have done) but I just wanted to get stories and testimonials from my peers here who may be involved with their communities and how they got started and what kinds of work they do.

I have this thing where I want to help the elderly but I think that could be kind of depressing because I used to go and visit at a Retirement Home here in my hometown. I really want to do something with the physically/mentally disabled adults or perferrably kids who I can be some kind of positive influence on. Who knows, maybe it can even make me feel better about myself. I have just so much to give and no where to give it. I can only let my emotions flow through my fingers so much.

The thing that really triggered this was this piece I saw on Albert Pujols who works with kids with Down Syndrome in the St. Louis area. I just watched this piece and was just so touched by it seeing how this guy who is so larger than life is doing and giving so much to these kids and the community. Someone I would like to model myself after. There are also the countless United Way commercials during the football games on Sunday that always just hit me. I mean these are athletes going out and doing all this good and even though I am no athlete I have just as big of a heart as these guys do and I can too be active in my community.

So yeah, anyway.......any feedback, fill me in.

If you are looking to help you could ask small churches if they know of a family that needs help. You could donate food, clothes, toys, etc to that family or families.

I donate things to churches before I would shed a dime for a fundraiser. Fundraisers only give about 10 cents to every dollar (some not even that) that you donate to the actual cause. Give in person and your money/ help goes further.

I've done a lot of work with local churches, even though I'm no longer a churchgoer myself. They're constantly outreaching communities in a number of ways. Check with local hospitals and police stations.

up until recently there was a banner ad for a pitbull rescue program out of upstate that served the tri-state area+.
i made them a banner ad and made a program for a big ass charity concert.
a very worth while cause, in my eyes, since irresponsible pitbul owners are a scourge on the community.

I used to coach track and basketball for my church's CYO program. We did various fund raisers, picnics and I used to be able obtain free tix to various sporting events for the group.

There was this women in my office that was a part of Big Brothers & Big Sisters (http://www.bbbsny.org/) and she said it was extremely rewarding. Basically, your going to become an idol to a disadvantaged kid. Youll get involved in helping the kid have a normal life and go to games together and meet their family and go on trips to Great Adventure or whatever, help them with schoolwork etc.

Try Meals on Wheels if you want to work with the elderly. They always need help.

I had a feeling there would be some response that would be kidding and some that would be helpful. No biggie.

Those links were extremely helpful above.

Thanks.

another thing you can do is go to the local shelters and help by buying food or walking dogs.

Usually during Christmas and Thanksgiving local churches have drives. I go with my brothers fiance on Thanksgiving to a list of houses we get from her church and drop off food and some clothes, etc.

It might be easier to start giving back on one of these holidays, and then just keep going from there. Ask someone from the church or community center to keep you in know of services theyre gonna need help with in the future.

In HS my basketball coach used to take us to the local soup kitchen to help out. Especially the night before Thankisgiving and Christmas eve. But they can use help there year round.

I got over my fear of old people a few years ago when I worked in an office that had several elderly volunteers (78, 80, 82 and 105!), and all but one of them were great - very funny, lively and smart as hell.

I always thought that if I had the time, I would volunteer back at the Smithsonian. Most of any free time I have is doing website design and upkeep for friends, and doing production and volunteer work at a local public access television station.

Hardly the most altruistic thing - but it is providing some sort of entertainment for people in Fairfax County.

I really think that instead of focusing on the specific people you'd like to help (the elderly, kids, people with special needs), first look at what you can offer - what kind of time commitment, what kind of special skills, etc. and sort of move from there.

There are tons of really good organizations that help place people who want to get involved in the community with the people who need the help.

There are pretty wide extremes you can go - in the end, it could be anywhere from a couple hours a week stuffing enevelopes for a crisis center, or you may decide and roll the dice and become a foster parent or adopt a child who is stuck in foster care.

Trying to become like the buddha is often as good as being the buddha.

I do any type of autism awareness/fundraising events. There is autism awareness day at Shea Stadium, the Walk Far for NAAR walkathon, autism awareness day at Adventure Land, autism awareness at Port Jeff bowling alley, etc. etc.

Autism is the cause that I work for; maybe you can find something that you believe in strongly as well.

That's an excellent idea - Fluff, why not get involved with a local animal shelter, or something to do with animal / cat rescue?? (As long as you don't bring any more home!)

The last thing I did, while not necessarily for my local community was a collection for hurricaine victims in Florida. I collected money and then went to Home Depot picked up items that were needed and sent it off as a relief package.

I also do work on the side once in a while for the American Legion. Mostly it's small things like making signs, or stationary, mailing lists etc.
