Oh man, as a Tennessean that shit's just an everday thing. In high school my biology teacher totally skipped biology for fear of parental retaliation. In college, damn, you should've seen the students just being absolutely floored that they were being taught evolution. It was as if he'd brought some porn to class and started jacking off to it. They were shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED!

The only thing I wonder about in this regard however is this. If the school text book says that evolution occurred as we know it, and then a child then asks the question of how his religion says otherwise, won't it open the discussion in the classroom to the various theories on creationism that different religions have?
What I mean is, religion isn't supposed to be discussed in the classroom and I'm fine with that, however if a child is inquisitive to the facts in the textbook and it contradicts his or her religion then how does the child learn if it can't be discussed?
I'm not at all defending these schools, however I'm only asking what's the best way for the schools to be able to talk about evolution without stepping on the toes of people with religious viewpoints that differ from the what we know? I just think it has to be hard for any school or community to approach the subject without that getting interjected.

I've been at, and even participated in a couple of debates on this. It's brought up at, well, shit how many school boards are there in one state alone?
I helped critique science textbooks, and you would not believe how PC they make these things. They have to, if they want anyone in some states to even consider buying them. History books, I can understand the difficulties in what to include and what not; theres some very controversial, even disturbing parts of history, and well, you never see some of it.
All I asked of those who would wish to have other alternatives brought to the table other then what would incorrectly be called Darwinian Evolutionary Theory
-To study even the basics of what Evolution really means, what Natural and Artifical Selection are, and to study to exant evidence for evolution.
-Sometimes I bring up; which Creation would you have me teach. My students range from Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, and quite a few others. There are thousands of Creation tales throughout the world and history. Which? All?
-Intelligent Design? It's the God of the Gaps. Is Evolutionary Theory good? The evidence fills the libraries and museums and science classrooms of the planet. A look around outside shows evidence of Selection for anyone who wishes to see.
Is Evolutionary Theory complete? Not even close; just like many theories: Flight, atoms, disease... all real as real can be, all supported by theories that are incomplete at best. Something can be both a fact and a theory.
Science isnt helping; boatloads of crappy science teachers arent helping. For me its a simple matter of science literacy; and we are one science illiterate nation. Sound elitist? I say it coz it scares the fuck out of me
I'll stop here for now :)

In my school, we dicussed evolution and several different religion's theories on creationism. I thought it was awesome and interesting.
Some people, however did not, and said that the school was teaching us about Paganism and Devilworshipping.
It ended up that there was a School Board meeting on it, and some nutty religious group bussed over 400 people in from out of state to protest it.
Same situation with MAGIC:The Gathering cards in school as well.

those denying evolution are going to be viewed by history the same way we view those who believed the earth was flat and the center of the universe.
what's worse is as the current republican whackos push for their school vouchers (which are terrible mainly for sucking the public education system dry, creating a greater education gap between the haves and have-nots, and not dealing with the poor education system directly) they will be able to put more kids in chruch schools and warp their precious little minds without having to bring up science and evolution altogether.

This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered.
The bible should come with that sticker.
