Three die in separate auto accidents on Island

November 7, 2004

Three people were killed in separate accidents on Long Island Friday and yesterday, two of them involving drunken drivers, police said.

The first was a hit-and-run, police said. About 8:35 p.m. Friday, Rubina Ramzan, 29, of Bohemia, was crossing Lakeland Avenue near her home. A blue 1999 Lexus driven southbound by Serafin Santiago, 30, of Sayville, hit her as she stood in the median, Suffolk police said. The car continued without stopping.

Police said Ramzan had just escorted three children across Lakeland to an apartment complex and was on her way back home when she was struck. She was waiting in the center turn lane for traffic to clear when Santiago crossed a double yellow line to pass another southbound vehicle, police said.

Ramzan's family saw the accident and ran outside, police said. No one in the family could be reached for comment.

A witness wrote down Santiago's license plate and called the police, who later apprehended Santiago in front of his house.

Police charged Santiago with driving while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

He was held at the Fifth Precinct pending his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip. He was arraigned today and held on $50,000 cash bond.

coincidental

my daughter came home today 'teary-eyed'... it turns out a friend 'not a very close friend' but in her high school and who lived a few blocks from us was killed yesterday when a couple friends of hers came down from Conn for a visit. They took the mothers car and wound up running from the police and hitting a utility pole. Supposedly this girl was thrown from the backseat and through the windshield. One passenger is in a coma and the driver made out okay. This girl was a sophomore, probably 15 years old.

This is how my daughter heard it. She was going to the site of the crash with a friend today. She said they were closing the street off and having a memorial service or something of the like.

damn reeshy that does suck.

my cousin was killed crossing the NJ Parkway when he was 18. he should not have been doing it, and was high at the time. i guess he over estimated how fast he was. he was always a wild bastard, and finally paid for it. It was such a sad funeral

One Saturday night in college, we were just all about to head out for the night, when some people started coming to our dorm to say that one of my best friends, Joe, was just killed in a car accident. He lived about a half hour away, and went home that night for his father's 50th birthday party. As he was driving back, some other car crossed the double yellow line and hit Joe head on. They showed his totaled jeep on the news, and I couldn't sleep for months after that. Took me a very long time to get over.
