View Full Version : Unemployed, Again.
At 4:55 last friday, I was brought into the Senior Vice President of my Old company's New York office and told due to a sudden decrease in projects coming through the NYC office, and their need to cut overhead, that Friday would be my last day. Then in the 2 minutes that it took me to get a box to pack my stuff up in and get back to my desk, they shut me out of the system and my computer.
So this is the second time I've been layed off in 3 years, so I would like to thank everyone who voted for another term for George Bush.
I'm really depressed and nervous, so please be kind.

I really wish you the best man as you are really one of the few good people left. That I know of anyway. I will keep asking as things keep popping up in the Tri-State area if anything opens with my company. Good luck with everything.

Sorry man. It sucks. You think you got it bad, I work in IT and got laid off 3 times this year. Worked for a company for 4 and a half years and got laid off in january after they cut over 60% of the company in the last 2 years. Took 4 months to find another job. Worked there for 3 months and was let go because my boss said I was not putting in enough time. I was working 8am- 6pm and not taking a lunch. He also said I was not picking things up quick enough for him. I hope that douchebag rots in hell because it's the only issue I ever had with a boss. 2 weeks later I found a contracting job. It ended up being only a month because other contractors in teh group had just finished a project and they had nothing to do. So they took over what I was doing. Kind of last man in and first man out.
This year has sucked donkey dick. I have been on countless interviews and so many times I was one of the 2 final candiates only not to get the job. The only benefit is I have spent time with my 19 month old daughter. Keep plugging away, but I am not going to bullshit you, it is very hard.

sorry hosp
i was in a very similar situation 2 years ago, i am a programmer and only worked about 5 months that year, for 3 different employers.
Employers love certifications, i studied and got 2 (mcad and mcsd) and that made all the difference, after i finished studying, i re-applied for jobs, got 3 job interviews for the 3 jobs i applied for in the first week and got offered 2 jobs out of those 3. prior to this i was getting interviews for about 20% of jobs i applied for and was getting alot of "you are our second choice" feedback.
certification does not improve your knowledge, but the person making the employee decisions usually has limited technical ability and always picks the safe option i.e. person with the cert. additionally you are viewed as far more indispensable in the workplace
best of luck, here a few more tips that got me through a very bad time
1.) do not take it personally, IT is the wrong industry at its worst time
2.) treat the application process like a job
3.) never pin your hopes on one job or one recruitment consultant

Hosp, you were doing admin work right? I PMed you the name of a really good Manhattan recruiter. She got me a lot of good interviews.
The market is picking up for admin work, I know its rough, it took me 4 months to get the job I have now and I had to take a $7k paycut.

Out of work 10 months, work for a year and a half, work for six months, out six months now and still looking. Welcome to the wonderful world of IT, where the only job offers I've gotten so far are so low that minimum wage laughs at them.
Being unemployed sucks.

This post makes me think of a jackass who works for me. He hasn't even graduated from college, and he has a nice job that a lot of college graduates would love. They moved him from another department into my department about a year and a half ago. He comes in late all the time. I'd love to show him the door, but it won't happen. I don't do the hiring & firing. I can write him up and ask my boss to fire him, but it just turns into a big war with a lot of tension at work. They hired him, so fuck it. I have only 60 years left to live, I don't feel like doing battle.
Good luck Hosp, you'll find something better.
