"What is wrong with this picture? ABC will be airing Steven Spielberg's Oscar winning film Saving Private Ryan tonight, uncut and unedited, to commemorate Veteran's Day. The network has aired the movie twice before on this holiday, in 2001 and 2002, also uncut and unedited. As in the past, the network will air warnings/advisories during each commercial break of the graphic violence and language in the film; tonight the film will be introduced by Senator John McCain R-Ariz. Here's the rub. Since network affiliates can be fined as quickly as the network itself on FCC violations, some stations have taken a proactive route and contacted the FCC to find out if this film will in any way be in violation of the regulations, and/or ask for a pre-broadcast waiver. The FCC cannot respond to those inquiries; it says responding would be deemed censorship or illegal prior restraint. The result is 18 television stations will preempt the movie tonight - stations owned by Belo, Scripps, Tribune, Cox, Hearst-Argyle, Citadel and Pappas. When the film aired in 2001, the FCC did receive complaints from American Family Assoc (Donald Wildmon's group) and the FCC responded thusly: "We cannot conclude that this material is indecent. The expletives used by some characters, in context, do not appear to depict or describe sexual or excretory organs or activities. Moreover, the use of expletives or other 'four-letter words' in and of itself does not render material indecent." And yet, with the vagaries of today's FCC, stations can't be sure that previous ruling will stand, nor can they receive any sort of guidance from the same group that can slap them with a fine. ABC has told its affiliate body it will cover any fines from the FCC, but what it cannot do is cover any other sanctions imposed by the government agency, including license revocation. Imagine a cop saying he may give you a speeding ticket if you go too fast or even take away your car, but refusing to tell you the speed limit."

Unbelievable.

Is this what it has come to? The FCC is starting to create a fear among media outlets that prevents them from showing Saving Private Ryan on Veterans Day.

Also on my "They make me sick" list is people in groups like the American Family Association.

Close minded, arrogant, neo-con religious pricks who want to live in Disney World.

I hope they are all molested by Goofy.

Far and Away?

Kick a veteran in the teeth why don't ya?

Boston is a tough town, full of veterans, and the ABC affiliate airs Far and Away instead because the FCC might get a complaint about "Fuck Hitler".

Disgusting.

Like they give a damn about the violence.

You KNOW the issue here is the language.

These kinda things ONLY come up if we're at "risk" of seeing a naked naughty bit or hearing a "dirty" word.

Here we go. The Family Research Council represents the worst of our country. Tony Perkins needs a huge kick in the ass with a very pointy shoe. In fact, I hope a high heeled transvestite kicks him. Repeatedly.

From IMDB.com:

New Call For FCC Action on 'Private Ryan'

The head of the conservative Family Research Council has sent an email message to his followers asking them to send letters to FCC Chairman Michael Powell demanding that stations that aired Saving Private Ryan last Thursday be fined for violating the agency's decency rules. In the message, FRC President Tony Perkins said, "There is no question that the show violated the federal indecency and profanity prohibitions and now I need your help to get FCC Chairman Michael Powell to enforce the law against ABC." Perkins said that while the movie is one of his all-time favorites, ABC should have used "technology" to remove the offending language. "No one would argue that the 'F' word is a central part of this epic film," he said. Under the network's contract with DreamWorks, the film's producers, Ryan may not be edited in any way.
