View Full Version : My mom has cancer

I just came from my mom's house, where she broke the news to me that she was diagnosed with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. In layman's terms, it's a rare, chronic cancer of the immune system; despite its rarity, at least two of my other relatives have also had this disease.

I guess I really don't need to say that I'm not doing too well right now, nor is my stepfather. Mom, however, refuses to be negative. She feels pretty good, and she may be starting chemo shortly (she still has to undergo a few more tests to see how advanced the cancer is). Although the average lifespan after diagnosis is 5-7 years, she's already heard from people who are marking their 20th anniversary post-diagnosis.

I'm sad, and I'm angry. She's never had an easy life, and now, just 7 months away from her 50th birthday, she's been given a possible death sentence. I know that she could possibly live for several years without ever showing any symptoms, but I also know that the next few (and possibly last) years of her life could be hell.

Sorry to be shoveling my problems, but I just need an outlet, since I don't want to bring my mom down. If you could spare a prayer for her, please do so.

Peachy, I'm so sorry to hear that. I will definitely say a prayer for her, I hope everything works out. One of my best friends just got the news that his father has cancer almost throughout his body, it's absolutely devestating. That plus the fact that he's so close with his dad makes it extremely difficult. The best I can do is be there for him and I hope we'll be a comfort for you here as well.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words.

I just listened to a voice mail that Mom left on my cell phone. She saw a doctor today and he confirmed that she does indeed have cancer. He also said that, as it is a slow-growing cancer, she could actually forgo treatment if she chose (or something like that... maybe he meant that there was no rush). However, after a lengthy discussion, they both decided that it would be best to start treatment and try to get the cancer into remission as quickly as possible. She will be starting chemo on Monday, and her spirits are still high. My stepfather will be accompanying her to every hospital visit. Mom told me "Don't worry, because I'm not worried."

So again, thanks guys. If anyone ever wants any updates, I'll provide them. Hopefully, it'll all be good news.

My prayers and good thoughts go out; and the power of prayer, to the self, and sending out good wishes to those at a distance, is a truly wonderful thing, with some astounding results, but a discussion on anything else is utterly inappropriate here, so I'm sticking to the matter at hand, your mother, who is on my Prayer List.

Peachy...my thoughts and prayers go to you and your mother. It sounds like she has the perfect attitude about this, she believes she will beat this and I think she might! She sounds like a strong woman.
I hope it all works out for her and you!
Good luck...keep us posted!

i wasn't discussing anything else, mike. it would be dishonest for me to say she would be in my prayers because i don't pray. the way i stated my sympathies was in accordance with my beliefs.

that being said, the debate is utterly inappropriate here.

Just a quick update, for anyone interested:

Mom just had her last chemo treatment for the year, and won't have to go back in for another round till January 4. She's responding very well to the treatment, and after the inital fatigue and sickness she's feeling pretty good. She even still has a full head of hair, despite her doctors warning her that it could fall out at any time.

Thanks to everyone for their words. Jeff, I'm sorry if my inital post offended you in any way, but your post was appreciated.

Awesome news Peachy.

My dads cancer was a grade 4 or 5 tumor by the time they found it, and it was in his brain. He was able to last a long time and I hope your mom is able to as well.

Be strong for her. I'll pray/wish/hope for her health.

Best wishes to you and your Mom, Peachy. I lost my sister last year (at 37) to breast cancer. She has two kids. I wish I could say something to help you, but I'll just say it made me appreciate just how precious times like the holidays are. You only get so many, so make the most of them. Again, all my best to you and your Mom.

Hopefully this is the last update I'll have for a long, long time.

Yesterday, the doctor told Mom that she is in remission. She has to go in for a shot on Friday (her white blood cell count is a bit low), and then she goes back in for one last round of chemo in three weeks. Considering that she was anticipating having to go through 6 months of chemo, this is great news.

I can't thank you guys enough for your support. It's been greatly appreciated by my family.
