Oh man I really goofed today. I unistalled alot of programs I didn't think I needed or ones that were rarely used. I have no idea what I got rid of. Well now I got problems...On a bunch of websites I've got red Xs everywhere. I checked the properties and they are .cgi.

I also keep getting error messages where it seems advertisments would go...

HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
Internet Explorer
You are not authorized to view this page

And lastly, my comp is now ridiculously slow. When I scroll down, the page kind of waves...if that makes sense.

I went back and installed Macromedia Flash Player which did nothing.

Please help!!!

if you go to control panel and remove IE, you'll be prompt for add/repair/unistall ... try the repair function ...

you might wanna go to microsoft.com and download the latest version and updates for IE ...

if you have XP, you might need to tun off 'system restore' before any changes takes place ...

You may also want to run the System File Checker or SFC which you can run by going to the Start Menu, then Run and in the command line enter SFC. The System File Checker will look for any missing files and will prompt you to insert your Windows CD so have it on hand, it works very well at restoring and replacing missing or corrupted system files. I've used it numerous times to restore computers and get things working properly again.

You can find out more about the System File Checker (SFC) at this website. (http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/howto-24.html) As well as this one... (http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html)

If you're running winXP, just do a system restore to the closest date previous to uninstalling all those programs.

I've tried some of the above and no dice.

I can't find my restore disks..any other suggestions?

No, with system restore within winXP, you just go to your control panel and find the "system restore" option. You don't need any floppies.

Ok I did the system restore with no luck. It didn't reinstall the programs I deleted but I was able to figure out which ones I needed. I downloaded DirectX and ATI Control Panel. I tried to dwnld ATI Display Driver but I kept getting an error message before it installed not allowing me too.

So I'm back to red Xs and error 403 :(

Red x's and 403s are network issues, nothing to do with graphics and direct x and all that. CGI errors happen when someone does not configure their website correctly and screw up the settings on their servers.

What webpages are broken for you, is it all of them or just a select few?

Post a few links so we can see if they are broken for everyone or just you.

Did you muck around with any network programs or firewall settings or anything like that? Did you happen to screw something up on your router?

Is it possible you removed the Java console? I had this problem a few weeks ago when I found Windows didn't install Java, after I downloaded the Java software everything worked fine

Java download... (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)

Those sites dont use java though..

Hmm..

Have you tried using a non-IE web browser to see if the pages work for you that way? Something like Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) perhaps. If it works for one browser and not the other then at least the problem can be narrowed down.

Personally I think the only real solution is to reinstall Windows, this would definitely solve the problem as obviously something is wrong, corrupted or missing.

I had a problem about a week ago where when I open IE and would go to a webpage IE would stop working after a couple of seconds. I tried everything I could to fix the problem. I even removed IE and reinstalled it and still nothing would work. Finally I got tired of the problem that I reformatted yesterday and reinstalled Windows XP, the problem is now gone.

Note that I know that you said you don't have the restore disks, however I think the only real solution is a reinstall of Windows. I should have noted that in my response.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode (with networking)? If the problems go away when you are in Safe Mode, it means that there is a configuration issue, or some other program is running that is causing the problem (possibly spyware/malware).

Also, check your security settings for IE. Temporarily set them to the lowest levels to see if it clears up the problem.

Sometimes, reinstalling TCP/IP may resolve the issue if the TCP/IP stack was corrupted (or some file for it was deleted).

Stupid ass power surge..

Anyway, I was thinking, did you ever install Peer Guardian or any other sort of firewall type utility?

If so, are they running? Try turning off the Windows firewall and seeing if that works. Since both browsers are broken and you tried reinstalling your network drivers with no success I would also say do the obligatory "run adaware and spybot with the latest definitions" type thing.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That did it!!!!!! I KISS YOU!

I was using ZoneAlarm Pro and when I did a windows update they gave me one. So now what do I use for a firewall?

edit: If I turn off ZoneAlarm and keep on the windows one I don't have the problem. But I use zonealarm on my other pc and I have no problems. What up with that?

Just leave the Windows one on if you really want to but considering that you are now behind a router you really don't have much to worry about.

Get service pack 2 if you havent already (get rid of zone alarm before you upgrade) and leave the windows firewall on. The router will take care of everything if you dont go in there and start opening up ports and all that. You don't really need anything else besides Peer Guardian.. and that you only need to run when you go on P2P stuff like Bittorent.

Wow, DW I'm glad you were able to get up and running again. I should've thought of the firewall.

Get service pack 2

Is anyone using SP2 here? I've kept away from it because many different tech sites said it was loaded with problems. Have they been resolved?

I have been using it since the RTM version was out and havent had any problems. All my games and applications work fine with it and there is a list of programs with known problems someplace on MS's website.

It's a very very good upgrade worth it for the IE upgrades alone.

I've avoided service pack 2 because I keep seeing security problems come up in the news like the one below...

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1728815,00.asp

Security researchers are warning of another pair of vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser affecting users on fully patched Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems.

Well that's a pretty dumb reason to avoid it considering that if you DON'T have SP2 then you will have a whole lot more to worry about. By your logic you should avoid Windows all together since there are tons fo security flaws out there.

By getting SP2 you will be fixing more holes then you will be getting. No matter the version of Windows you are using you will have security holes. It's better to have the latest patches to close all of the holes they know about. You'll never be 100% safe but its best to be as up to date as possible.

Of course SP2 has some holes it in. Every version of everything has holes in it and no matter how much patching and fixing developers do there will always be a cracker out there somewhere who finds a way in.

That was just one example. I've seen many articles and talked with numerous IT people who have told me to avoid Service Pack 2 like the plague until they work out all the problems. Perhaps it's better now, I don't know.

Our home users who have XP were advised against SP2, as it interferes with our VPN client and breaks a few other software programs. Until the issues are resolved and the green light comes from out integration testers, they are advised to not upgrade. Most of them are using cable modems with routers anyway, and they are afforded the necessary protection with the router.

My machine is also free of SP2. I'm not an early adopter. I like to make sure that the bugs are out of the system before putting it on my main productivity machine.

I also read somewhere that it breaks Kazaa.

I installed SP2, then my Yahoo Radio wouldn't work. I could live with that. Then all of a sudden my DVD X Copy wouldn't work. So I uninstalled SP2. If I want a firewall, I'll buy some software that doesn't affect or make use my programs impossible.
