My parents just called me up to say that my cousin, Jimmy, was in a terrible car crash that they read about in the paper. They said that the article states that Jimmy and his friend were in the hospital, but one of Jimmy's friends died.
I was upset about this. Then I did a google search and this is what I come up with from the AP:

Man dies in Rocky Point car crash
Sunday November 14, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) A twenty-four year-old man has died after losing control of his car and hitting a tree early Sunday morning.
James Urbelis of Ridge, Long Island was ejected from his car after he missed a turn and hit a tree in Rocky Point around 4:30 A-M. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Urbelis was with two friends, Thomas Leahy and Eric Abram.
They both survived the crash and are being treated at the hospital.
Police are continuing the investigation but a spokeswoman said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.

This article states that my cousin was the one who died. No one is answering the phone when my mother tried to call earlier.
How do I find out which is true?? I am totally shaking right now.

This one says it wasn't your cousin.
Urbelis and another passenger, Eric Abram, 24, also of Ridge, were both taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for their injuries. Urbelis was treated and released; Abram was in fair condition, according to a spokesman at the hospital.

it would be best to speak with a family member who has been to the hospital. these two articles will leave you 'second guessing'...
hope all works out for the better!

wow, I cant believe that this paper would be so neglagent to put something like that in there paper. That is absolutley ridiculous. There has to be something done about that. Through a law suit or public appology they should be held accountable for their neglagence.
As for not being able to get in touch with your family, just know that they are going through so much right now. They probably havent left the hospital since the accident. Who ever said for you to call the hospital, that is the best thing you can do right now.
Also get in touch with me and let me know what I can do to help.

Thanks. We ended up getting hold of a family member, and it was not my cousin who died, but his best friend. He is a mess. When I called up CBS to complain, they put me on hold then made me call back ten minutes later. I called back ten minutes later, and those assholes put me on hold and said they were too busy now call back another time. I said, "nice fucking compassion," and hung up. They knew the reason why I was calling too.

Wow, thats horrible! Im glad he isnt dead, but they really aught to be held liable for what they wrongfully report. I remember a story a few monts back that was very similar where the hospital got the names mixed up and called a family member to report the death of a child and the family came screaming into the hospital only to find that they goofed, but the family was furious and charged the hospital with causing undue stress and anxiety. I think I would have tried calling all the hospitals and police like mentioned above. Im sorry you had to go through all that!! :(

i wouldn't get too angry at anyone who gave false information 'unintentionally'... things can get pretty chaotic in an Emergency room
when my wife and i had an accident back in 87, my mom got called at 4am and went to the hospital where my wife was. it turns out i couldn't speak coherently due to a blow to the head and happen to be at another hospital. when my mom and little brother got to the hospital where my wife was at nobody knew where i was. A policeman and doctor were talking and my mother overheard them say 'the boy died'. Luckily for me but not for him it was the guy from the other car.
they later found me...

That's pretty irresponsible and shows how unprepared and unprofessional the reporter is.

I am going to get angry. They gave me and my parents a mini heart attack saying that my cousin dropped dead. What about the boy's parents who reads that their son lived when in fact he is the one who died. That's really fucked up. Just staring at those words wishing he DID survive and knowing he didn't.
