Pedestrian Crosswalk Buttons

Are they there to make you look like a fucking jackass? I mean those things don't do shit! I timed one today, and it took the same amount of time without pressing the useless button then it did pressing it 50,000 times. To make the experiment fair i timed it only pressing it once and still no difference. So what other reason are these fucking things there for other then spread diseases and fecal matter?

they are disabled in NYC due to the lights being computerized for max. traffic flow.

other places may or may not have them working. I know in some small towns they def. do work.

In many big cities those buttons are dead. And in many local towns they also do nothing. Though once in a while I'll find one in a small town that works. Overall though I think they don't really do anything anymore.
