There is a black woman where I work who speaks with no accent whatsoever, but who gets a visit from time to time from a Jamaican woman from a different department. When the visitor is there, she suddenly adopts a Jamaican accent! Why do people do this? Does this mean that she is faking a non accent when the visitor isnt there??

I know 3 Irish women who moved to the U.S. just around Jr. High age, within a year, they totally lost the accent. But can revive it at the drop of a hat!

My mom does this thing when she talks to foreign people who aren't that great with the english language where she picks up their lack of language and talks like she's new to english. It's funny as hell.

When a Canadian starts talking to me I start talking like Alex Trebek; which means I keep asking them to phrase their answer in the form of a question.

As someone who does this maybe I can explain.
Due to the confusing nature, the fear that people might look at you different and being laughed at (or in my case, being tortured in school) you learn how to speak w/o the accent that you have. but when you get around fellow countrymen( in my case fellow west indians) you bring back the accent because you feel comfortable around them. that they won't laugh at you and make you feel stupid.so instead of being confused you should feel comfortable that someone has seen you as a person that can be free with. :) It's something you have to learn to do when you come over form another country or when your a little kid starting school. So you can fit in better and not be teased.

I've got a friend from Portugal. He came here when he was 8, so he doesn't really have an accent, but he does pronounce words slightly different sometimes.... kinda hard to explain, but anyway, I pick that up when I hang out with him, and it sticks with me for a day or two.
I also notice that when I'm around someone whose accent is really annoying to me, my speech gets more Jersey-ish.
