Agreed.
Classic Rock countdown shows act as Life-support for that song. I mean, does anyone ever REALLY go over to their stereo and actually play "Stairway"?
The definition of Classic Rock is shifting. "Stairway" belongs on Oldies Radio if it belongs on the radio at all.

Cause it's one of the few times we get to hear long-ass awesome songs like In the gadda da vida or The Hurricane. Songs like that are usually too long for commercial radio.

I have a kick ass version of Frank Zappa covering StoH; just to piss off the rest of the crowd when the drunks would inevitably shout it out when Zappa asked for requests. Or when he didnt. Had the hor section learn Page's guitar lead note for note. You gotta hear it.

Stairway is the most overrated song ever by the most overrated band ever. Aside from that, they have these stupid countdowns because people actually bother listening. The concept of trying something creative and original is hated by marketers everywhere.

How many times are they going to play the same three songs by Boston, Pink Floyd and the Who?

NY radio is pretty sad right now.

Zep is far from overrated,
Nirvana is greatly overrated.

It's not just NY radio that's in a sad state. Radio in all large markets has gone down hill due to conglomerations like Infinity and especially Clear Channel. What you're hearing in NY is the same as in DC and here in Nashville. They all have the same damn playlists. We might get more ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd here in the south on our "classic (shit) rock" radio than up north, but for the most part it's all the same homogenized BS.

yes cause 'love, love me do. you know I love you...' is a much superior lyric.

I don't really know how old most of you are, but I was 13 in 1991. And Nirvana literally changed my life. It changed who I hung out with, it just changed everything. Maybe it didn't have the impact on the rest of you, but there are a lot of people out there like me.

Spin Magazine about 5 years ago made a list of the greatest Punk albums of all time--you know what made the list? In Utero. And they're right. That's one of the most punk albums i've ever heard. Nevermind is the album that changed music, but if In Utero had never been made, Nirvana would not be considered genius. I would argue that Rape Me, All Apologies, and In Bloom should be ranked higher than Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I don't know why it is all the sudden so popular to bash Nirvana. People have a short memory I guess. But if Nirvana isn't genius then the Ramones aren't genius, The Who isn't genius....

And I like Bush. Creed? That's about as most as opposite from Nirvana as you can get.

In many ways, I agree with you. I think that WAY TOO MANY bands get credit for being "Brilliant".
Like you, I never understood why people absolutely LOVE "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" by The Beatles, but they HATE "Bye Bye Bye" by Nsnyc. One is just as superficial as the other.
Whenever people say "all of todays music sucks", I simply laugh at them for unknowingly turning into their parents.
Having said that... I just don't think that Nirvana is any more or less important than a lot of other bands. They were huge....I cant deny that. But they get sooo much credit for a "revolution" that was very short-lived. I think THAT is why people kinda bash them now.
Every single one of those Grunge-type bands are ancient history now(excpet MAAAAYBE for PJ)....and their reign was a lot shorter than people think.
As time goes on...those grunge bands will get bashed the same way we laugh at Hair Metal, The Boy Band phase, Electronica, Ska, White Rap Korny Biskit Metal, and so on and so on.

Its unlistenable. I can get a gig, now, at a pretty big station around here, but I cant talk for shit with the format, and spinning CDs I can do at home.

And some stations, like Snoogs mentioned somewhere else, I worked for an FM Guitar-Rock station for a year, and the entire music catalog fit on One of those rotating CD holders; maybe 200 CDs; and about 20 on a shelf, the 'adds' the new stuff. Only that new stuff stays for months.

I was immensely spoilt working what used to be WHTG 1063 at the NJ shore; they now call themselves G1063 and if you hear REM, its gonna be 'Losing MY Religion', 'ITEOTWAWKI' or 'Man on The Moon'. That's about it. Back then we had No Music Log. This was almost unheard of, against the rules actually, as you have to log for BMI/ASCAP, as R+F mentioned they get paid. A lot.

But we could pick what we played, and actually take requests, and stick and move as the night dictated. There is nothing more suckier then Voice Tracking. With apologies to the station of my last Vox gig, looking at a piece of paper that says "Wed 7p-8p" when its only Sunday, and youre at a computer, and hit the button, and do the outro, ID, blah blah, all the while Pretending it's Wed night. You cant even get specific on the Weather for fuck sake. And the music, every song, has been chosen by the MD, and arranged on computer.

Hey ironically they are an NPR station, so they have some interesting talk bits, and the Music is as diverse and good as, well, what you would hope a Real, Live, Eminating from the town you Live in show.

If you're lucky your Universities have a good station; here Princteons WPRB used to kick ass, but I dont listen. Fuck now I'm remembering when even the Philly rock stations like WMMR were seen as Serious Competition, Not for Ratings, but for how Kick-Ass the music was. Coz we got spolied as fuck when WNEW was Rock, and fucking A why dont they try it again? Blink and the Format Changes Radio didnt work, a year ago they flipped to all Xmas. What the fuck? That speaks one of those volumes, Mikey.

Fuck this is so long I would even read it.

Its an easy anti-establishment cliche, but its a truism: Commercial Music Radio Sucks.

Classic artists who are no longer around because they're retired or the band broke up or they're dead or whatever are one thing...

But what about guys like Springsteen and Dylan and Elvis Costello who still put out music, but are tucked away on classic radio with their music from 1985 and earlier only? What would be wrong with "classic rock" stations playing NEW songs by "classic rock" artists?

Makes sense to me.

The problem with rock radio today is that it's become extremely fractured.

A lot of "Rock" stations lean active or alternative. They don't like to lean "Classic" because there is a stigma attached of being an "old man" station.

Then when you come to "pure" classic rock stations, there's only a few that will play "new" classic rock. Most of them don't because they don't want to expand. They are very happy with their set playlist.

Q1043, the Arrow in DC, Carter Alan in Boston - they'll all play new songs.

The problem is, with classic rock artists putting out new material... a lot of the time, it's just not very good, and that's another reason why Classic Rock PD's won't touch it.

Neil Young's Greendale? Awful.

I agree in part; but I think part of it is that there *are* good new bands out there, but as bad as their chances were to get airplay on a big station was back *then*, today its just so much worse. I see a shitload of bands, and some are damn good, better then many with great albums and sales and popularity. A lot of those bands are yound and hungry, which is a part of it, but...

When Matt Pinfield left WHTG, I got his Sunday night Show, Local Licks. Stupid name. Anyway bands were killing to get on. I was just an hour, so 12 songs max, a whole lot less if you had an interview or in studio performance, which I encouraged. Lotsa real shitty home-made music, but there were the occasional act that just Killed, were so Good, Live and on CD, and they were all poised, and... pfffffft.

Meaning, exposure on local licks aint gonna do shit either; and for some they thought they made it when they were on. [Insert scene from "That Thing You Do"].

The good news is all this new media gives us all 500 cable TV channels, 400 Radio Channels, and the bad news is, that's one fractured market.

Heres what Wadd dont get.

Every band that got real popular is considered "genius" by its fans. And how about Pearl Jam and Nirvana always being put together as if thier music is even close to being similar. Apparently becoming popular at the same time and being from the same general area means you play the same type of music. Lots of bands sound like Pearl Jam, but nobody sounds like Nirvana(nobody good atleast). Now as far as Kurt being a genius you have a few things to consider. The band played the way they wanted with no intention of becoming mainstream and the shit was so good that the general public ate that shit up and turned them into one of the biggest bands ever. Is Kurt Cobain a genius? No, he was a fucking idiot, but a great musician. I do appreciate a band that doesnt sound like any other band though. Shit like ROTM, Nirvana, Danzig or whatever.

Alright anyway the thing with the top 1043 songs that pisses me off is this. I was listening around song 720 for a few hours and i knew most of the songs because I hear them on the station whenever I put it on. Now I know Godamn well they dont have no 700+ playlist in that rotation, so how are they playing songs that they themselves rate way down on the list on a daily basis and "crystal ship" which was around 300 or so never gets played?
