View Full Version : Christmas. Why is it offensive?
WRESTLINGFAN

More and more you have groups like the ACLU protesting Christmas time. Its not "PC" to say Christmas anymore.
Groups like the ACLU are sueing people because they have nativity sets on their front lawn. Their arguements is that there needs to be a seperation of Church and State. Christmas, with all its hoopla is a religious holiday and Why should Christians be forbidden to celebrate or even say Christmas?
I am no way a bible thumping fanatic, and If Atheists don't want to celebrate thats fine with me. No one is forcing the ACLU to celebrate Christmas or any religious holiday.
If the ACLU and organizations are for civil liberties, then what about my liberty to decorate my house with lights and a manger? No one is forcing someone at gunpoint to look at my house.
If someone doesnt want to celebrate holidays, its their opinion but why should they delegate what holidays are "offensive"?
Examples please.

They have been waging their campaign in the courtroom, forcing cities to remove Christian symbols, as well as forcing them to take down nativity scenes and so on.
They are talking about government property not your lawn.

Dude, that article doesn't mention anything about people's lawns, only cities that demonstrate nativity scenes (not Christmas trees, mind you, those are okay) on public property.

In Australia's third-largest city, the Brisbane city council has given the go-ahead for a homosexual group called the "Caroling Queens" to sing Christmas songs at a shopping mall.
"The glamorous Caroling Queens offer ... camped-up performances of favorite Christmas carols," the organizers said in a press release that promises "choreographed routines, feel-good tunes and a whole lot of sequins."
FABULOUS!!!

I agree with you that the ACLU is a liberal orginization that is pretty stupid. I'm not quite sure what you mean though. I haven't heard anything of them trying to take things off of your lawn.
I do know that in my town, we now have snow flakes instead of the christmas tree's we used to have on the telephone poles. I liked the tree's better.

What do Athiests celebrate? Nothing day?
No one says you cant put lights on your house. You have every right to do that. It's just Government that doesn't want to look like it favors one religion over another. They want to pretend they represent ALL the people. One answer is to give ALL religious groups equal opportunity to display their symbols on Gov't property. But that would make sense, and politicians running for office wouldn't be able to blame the ACLU for everything they screw up.

no one can prevent you from putting a nativity scene on your own lawn ... the issue over the last few years is nativity scenes on public property -- govt./civic buildings ...
and i'm sure this has been discussed before, but jesus has as much to do with as santa claus does ... they are both archetypes that illustrate all that is wonderful about life ...
x-mas is not a reilgious holiday, and any real significance has been coopted and disregarded years ago ...
the real offense seems to be fervent, simple-minded loudmoths consumed with preserving an outdated, passe notions of their childhood ...
if you honestly believe in the wonders of jesus and the virginal birth, matters of 'happy holidays' vs. 'merry christmas' or getting pissy over 'x-mas' seem unimportant ...

Is it REALLY "PC" that people started using the term "happy holidays?"
Of course not.
It actually began NOT because of Hannukah...but because of New Years. It comes less than a week after Christmas, two holidays that the majority of people in the country celebrate right on tops of each other...and "happy holidays" stems from that. You'll find celebratory materals and advertisements using the term in this country alone dating back to the 1800's. It originated out of convenience, not out of "PC." Put the pithcforks away and take a deep breath.
Same thing with "Xmas." It's been around for most of the 20th century. It's an abbreviation. Deal with it.

This Neo-McCarthyism against perceived 'liberals' is really scaring me...
A few observations:
1) The austrailia article cites a decision from their government to cut spending, it had nothing to do with the ACLU, or any Civil Liberties Organization.
2) The Op-ed piece that Wrestlingfan linked is an example of media trying to stir up said neo-McCarthyism, filled with baseless arguments, huge leaps in logic, and rediculous generalities, plus it includes the phrase "activist judges," which should disqualify it immediately.
3) as for "why can't public buildings put out decorations celebrating all holidiays?" maybe that makes the most sense, but the public outcry about "wasting taxpayer money" would be deafening. Remember, people only complain about how thier taxes are being spent if they can see it, which is why they complain about highways and holiday decorations, but not government-subsidized corporate accounting when it loses say $2 billion at a time...

Many of the earliest settlers in America came here to be able to practice their religion without being persecuted. Those who practiced other than the "official religion" of their respective countries had to practice their faith in hiding. This is one of the reasons that the language in Constitution states that Congress shall not make laws about the establishment of a religion in this country.
In my opinion, if your town wants to have a Christmas tree or Menorah on its property when the holidays roll around, that shouldn't be an issue. I'm not going to be offended by a symbol of someone's faith being displayed. If they want to make it official, just attend a town meeting and put a motion on the floor to have the displays put up. If it passes, it's official. Written on the record. If some other relgion wants their display up, they can go through the same process.
Regarding the weekend thing that furie pointed out, basically Saturday and Sunday are the sabbaths of both Jewish and Christian religions, and doctrine was that they were not to work on their respective sabbath. That's where this originated. If businesses today had their way, they probably would have us working on the weekends as part of a regular workweek- 9 to 5.

as government workers, ee are banned from using "christmas party" and rightly so. we have a holiday party. and our christmas bonus is called the "end of the year performance award". i still call it what it is, christmas party and bonus. they don't care what we call it, as long as the flyer says holiday, and that's just fine with me.

the ACLU hates Christmas,
That may be the single stupidest thing I've seen posted on this board.
According to the article, the carols are not because they "hate Christmas", it's it "hopes that the spirit of the Christmas season will fill the members and employees of the ACLU and that they will embrace the morals and principles of groups like the Boy Scouts and renounce their efforts to destroy traditional values in America."
Those Christmas carolers were expressing their 1st ammendment rights.
Who said they weren't. Your point?
