Frodo is the son of Primula Brandybuck. Merry's last name is Brandybuck. Are they related?

And, by the way, I'm really not so much a nut, I read the books and hated about 70% of the experience. Took me a year to read Fellowship because I kept falling asleep on every page. But I just remember some family tree showing that Frodo and Merry were cousins. The movies were very cool, though. One of the few times where they actually improve upon the source material.

The ROTK EE is much better than the TC version. I bought my copy last Friday from a video game and DVD store that sell DVD's early.

I have a question myself for the LOTR "nuts".

Why is it that Gandalf very rarely used magic and instead chose to fight with a sword in hand-to-hand combat?

The only time I saw him use any sort of magic was when he rode out and used his staff to cause light to scare off the black dragons. Aside from that, nothing. One would think he'd blast the orcs and behemoths coming through the gates with something.

And why doesn't Golom where a shirt? Isn't he cold?

Tolkien wanted magic in his Mythology to be "special," Magic in this world is very subtle and rarely used in boisterous ways, if ever, which is why Saurman's Fireball in the ROTK:EE seems a little "off" to me

Tolkien wanted to write an "English Mythology," having felt that the Normans, and some other groups had squelched most of whatever "Original English Myth" used to exist (Disc 3 of FOTR:EE) It's pretty safe to say that the "Original Inhabitants" of England were pretty light skinned. I'm actually quite happy that Jackson didn't go all "PC" with his casting, when it would have clashed with Tolkien's original line of thinking.

Tolkien is a racist.

Well, it was 50 years ago so . There are non-white humans in the movie, but they are all bad guys (Orks, Uruk-hai and those dudes who ride the giant elephants.)

Well, the Orks were just Orks...but the Uruk-hai looked kinda Jamaican for some reason. Maybe they've got a little Jar-Jar in them?

Yeah, who all came from the "east"...and just coincidentally, they all look Arabic-ish (Middle East) or Asian (far East).

How the fuck did they get elephants to England without anyone noticing?

And are Hobbits supposed to be Welsh? Because that would explain a LOT.

Though I'm convinced I saw a black dude marching with a bunch of human soldiers when the good armies were joining up. He had a big John Shaft-moustache and everything. Easily the most exciting thing I saw in all 76 hours of these movies, even if I completely imagined him.
