My promotional interview

I kicked ass and took numbers. Never have I rocked in such an interview. There were 1 others interviewing. Today I was recalled by the people who were interviewing and they said they loved me (In an interview type of way), however one of the people they were interviewing were already in the department and unless he made a total ass of himself he was getting the position. Guess what? He did not make an ass of himself. They just called me down to tell me how amazing it was and if he was to bomb (We work for taste you really have to bomb to get fired) I would be next.

My question why interview if they have no intention of hiring others?

They may be legally obligated to do so. Look at it this way... you may have set yourself up for a position later on in the company.
