View Full Version : I am going to freeze to death

It's a pretty good bet I just may be dead by morning. My heat has decided to stop working. Of course this happens on an absolutley freezing night.
Through my diagnostic testing, my furnace is shutting down because of "Ignition Lockout", which means it kicks on, and then shuts off 5 seconds later.
I have watched the temperature drop from 69 degrees at around 8:00 pm to it's current status of 54 degrees now at 1:30 am.
Obviously I can't get anyone here right now to fix it and I will have to wait until morning to call someone, so hopefully I'll make it through the night.
Based on the trend of degree decrease, I'm figuring that by morning it's going to be somewhere in the low 40's in here.
I just wish I had some brandy or some other liquor to at least warm me up or just get me too loaded to know the difference.
In the meantime, if any of you are HVAC techs in or near Ocean County NJ and can do me a solid by fixing it without price gouging me, you would be handsomely rewarded.
Providing of course I don't look like Jack Torrence's final moment by morning.

If you have candles, light them. You should always have emergency candles in the winter.

That's nothing.......one time our boiler went out. And when I went to the kitchen the next morning, the cup of water was no more.......it became a cup of ice!!! Trust me you'll live.
The only thing you have to worry about is frozen pipes. Good luck.

You know, there *are* home depots that are open 24/7. Doesn't hurt to get a 20 dollar space heater for the time being.
But if you've gone from Skidmark to Fudgsicle, we'll understand.

call public service and tell them that the heat is off and you cannot get it started and you smell gas. That will get them to you in a hurry. Sometimes they can fix the problem for free.

I was thinking the same thing. When the heat goes out I put my plug-in heater in the wall and warm up.

Well, I made it.
And here's the bitch of it all. Now I'm sweating my ass off.
When I went to bed, I plugged in the space heater, I wore two pair of socks, sweatpants, a t-shirt, thermal shirt, flannel shirt and a fleece shirt. I covered up in a fleece blanket and a comforter. It was 52 degrees.
As the sun came up and the outside temperature got warmer, the heat started working again. So by morning is was a normal 70 degrees in here.
Apparently when it just gets real fucking cold outside at night is when the furnace feels overloaded and shuts itself down.
Sooooo.... looks like I'm just going to have to get a new one soon. Which is fine because I really felt the urge to drop about a thousand bucks I don't have around the holidays.
Good times.

When I live in an apartment (like right now), I rarely, if ever, turn on the heat.
If you're not on the bottom floor, the rising heat seems to get trapped on the upper floors, at least somewhat, and my apartment never dips below 55 degrees or so, even on the last few nights, when it's gotten into the 20's outside.
Save them dollaz!

My heat is included in the rent. So it's cranked when I feel like it.

Sad thing is, this will not gaurentee that you do not have the same problem next year. I bought a new gas burnter, hot water heater, and a.c. compresor three years ago. Well, just when it started getting cold in early November, the fucking burner fucked up. Took the repair guy four visits to fix it and cost me $300.
I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker

does your oven work? turn on your oven and every open the door every hour or so to let the heat escape. just make sure you turn it off before you go to bed. that will help with the warmth.

My room in my house is the coldest in the entire place. It can be summer and if I have a fan blowing in the air, by morning it has dipped to the 60's, which is nice of course. I don't mind the cold, I actually kind of enjoy it.
Think about how nude eskimo's live in the cold. Think about that next time before you get all angry about a little cold.

I wouldn't use the oven. Too dangerous. God forbid you forget to turn it off, you have a choice between dying of CO2 poisoning or burning your house down, maybe with you in it.

Never use the stove to warm your house! What happens is the flame eats up the oxygen and eventually youll suffocate, plus, if its gas, youll be also slowly adding co2 to your air and youll pass out before you suffocate. Not good. I kind of found out the hard way when I lived in my first apartment and the heat went out and I tried doing that and while it did make the apartment warm, I ended up nearly passing out and finally came to my sences and turned it off and opened the windows and did some research and found that out. And with regards to the suggestion to call and say you smell gas, dont do it! Unless you really smell gas of course..I work for the gas company and when we get that call, we send someone out and they turn off your meter and you wont be able to get it back on until a plumber gets a certificate to us showing that there is no leak in the line. Youll be delayed longer and it will cost you more money.. Best thing to do is call a plumber, if you dont have any knowledge of how to fix it.
