I say stay. He cheated and got paid for a missed season, but I think he is paying for it with his health. He may never be as good off the juice but he is the first active player to come clean. He didnt have much choice but he is the only guy fessing up who has something at stake. We have bats, it wont hurt to see what he has. Yankee Pride is Alive in 2005.

paying with his health is not enough. he's simply living with the consequences of his actions upon himself.
He should be made to make restitution to the team and to the fans before being allowed back.

It would help to give money to good causes, become a role model of "dont let this happen to you". Whatever it takes to do the right thing. He took the first step and deserves a chance like everyone else. You remeber his 2 shots against pedro, right? Bonds wont admit anything and he is going to take away the biggest record in sports from a guy who is still alive! Is Aaron supposed to stand at home plate and smile while bonds destroys the entire integrity of the national game . It's disgraceful. Why celebrate the guy who mocks us and then ostracize someone who repents?

First of all Walrus, excellent thread. Cant believe someone hasn't done it sooner.
Giambi should VERY PUBLICALLY ask everyone to forgive him before anyone gives him any sympathy. Without that, I want him OFF THE TEAM. He got MILLIONS from Mr Stienbrenner based on cheating the game, the fans, his fellow players, and himself. It remains to be seen what he has left Baseball-wise. If he can still play, he should give a portion of his salary to some kind of drug treatment center. The trouble is, I dont think he has the charecter to follow through with any of this. And God forbid he gets in a slump. Fans at HOME will be chanting STERRR-OIDS, forget about on the road. And the times he was in a slump before the steriod stuff came out, he had his DADDY (no joke) fly in to hold his hand. I dont think he's mentally tough enough to deal with what he'll go through this year, and still produce. For him, the Yanks, and MLB its best for all parties he goes elsewhere, preferably a small media market.

I cant blame you for wanting to get rid of him, there is no justification for him. The whole thing is really dissapointing. But he came clean and there is something to be said for that in this situation. Either way we will still end up paying his salary, he is damaged goods.

Fuck that...if he was still productive, no one would be saying jack. We gave Howe, Strawberry and Gooden a chance. Why not Giambi??? He could be come back player of the year.
Like known of the old timers ever cheated in baseball with all the stuff they used to ruff up the baseball. Didn't see too many people holla when McGuire was hitting homeruns or the mass production of homeruns in the 90's 2000's. Oh wait...that's because the ball is more tighter, the ballparks are smaller. Steriods? Yeah right.

Exactly. You don't see anyone saying Sheffield should be run out of town or give money back.

From what we know now, Sheffield used the "Cream" for a short period of time related to a torn bicep injury.
Giambi used steriods for years and years, even going back to High School, to the point where he's ruined his body. There's a difference between the two.
That's not to say Sheffield doesn't deserve some sanction by Baseball or legally. But Giambi did so much he ruined his ability to play, maybe permenantly, certainly for the past 2 years he hasn't been the player the Yankees thought they signed. Had the Yankees known the extensive nature of his steriod use, I cant imagine them giving him SEVEN YEARS, knowing the risks involved. I hope the Yankees void his contract EVEN IF he comes back and plays well. If he comes back and plays well, how will you ever know its legit?

How do you know Sheffield isn't still doing it? And this thing that Sheffield didn't know what he was taking is a joke. Giambi a guy who goes out and parties and eats fast food, knew exactly what he was taking but Sheffield, a guy who knows every calorie that goes into his body, just took a cream and never asked what it was?

best case scenario ...
+ giambi gone
+ tino at first
+ beltran in center
+ bernie as DH
but, as a yankee fan, there's such an abundance of talent, it's kind of hard to complain ...

Nice scenario
And yes, its hard to complain. Most other teams wish they had our problems.
I cant find any AL team that scares me this year, Though a few NL teams look pretty tough, especially the Cards w/Mulder

How do you know he is? His testimony hasn't been released so all we have is what he's (sheffield) volunteered. To say he's still doing it is speculation on your part, I'll go with the FACTS as we know them.
BTW He's not the health food control freak. You're thinking of Bonds

Well the FACT is, he said he took it but didn't know what they were. Do them cut a break to players who say "I didn't know it was coke?"

No, I said he deserves a sanction, just not as severe as Giambi. Whether he knew or not, I cant say. From following Sheffield up close this year, He comes across as a guy who's a straight shooter, but not a rocket scientist. Either way, he deserves a penalty of some kind but not as severe as Giambi at this point. If we find out later he's just as bad as Giambi, he'll deserve the same treatment. But we dont KNOW that now.

Now Giambi will get a chance to DH, we will see what he's got. We will have to pay him anyway. Welcome home Tino!

Tinos stats from last year (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4545)
Had a nice year last year. Hopefully Giambi falls down a flight of stairs and he gets to play the whole year.
