I just bought myself a Christmas gift. it is

30 in Widescreen Real Flat HDTV - 30PW850H99
This Widescreen HDTV Monitor features 2 HD component inputs, RealFlatT invar picture tube, Active ControlT, Eye FidelityT, 3D digital comb filter, 20 watt audio with Incredible SurroundT sound, universal remote and AutoFeaturePak.
It probably won't be here for a week, so I have time to take suggestions.
I was thinking T-2, Men in Black, or Gladiator.
I already have a 5:1 set up to a trinitron, with 750 watts of filling loosening sound.
Sad, I've only cranked it up 3 times in the last 6 months.
Anyway, what would be your first DVD?

I actually have a bootleg DVD from Singapore, which they lifted off of the laser-disc, and (somehow) transformed the sound into 5:1. (before Lucas got his liberal hands on the re-issue.)
And except for a few jumps when you have to "flip" the laser-disk, it ain't half bad.
It's in the running.

if not that, then Braveheart. You'll want the Battle of Sterling Bridge from one side of the room, to the other!

Is that a Glass Tube style TV? I'm thinking I'll go with that for my first HDTV. Still has a better picture than LCD Projection and Plasma. Plus it's cheaper, but you can only get the screen so big and you can't hang them up, but I'd rather see a better picture than hang it up.
Oh yeah, I'd play "The Fifth Element" (And that was the first DVD I played when I got my first DVD player in 1998) not the best movie (story wise) but it looks and sounds fantastic.

to test the sound system and the level of detail on the tv id have to vote for matrix.
btw since your tv is widescreen does it take off those black bars on a widescreen dvd?

SEVEN has an amazing mix. Really dark.
MATRIX is the standard.
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is the "realistic" standard.
T2 ULTIMATE EDITION has a really cartoony (in a good way) soundtrack.

The only thing you can test with a DVD is your sound. The picture of a DVD is not HD quality. For that you'd need an HD receiver. But soon the HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs will be out and your picture will rule.

Well, I wound up going with Toy Story 2.
I figured a pure digital transfer of Pixar's CGA would be a nice test. (plus the whole family was still here, and that was the safest choice)
I went DVD to s-video to the new set. and still had the digital audio out to the amp. (basic 5:1 set-up)
WOW!!!!
The images just popped. Especially the scenes with Woody and Buster. (still some of the best animation I have ever seen!)
The DVD defaulted to widescreen, and the 16:9 set did not miss a beat. It switched itself into progressive mode, and away we go!!
I pushed the amp up to over 50 for the THX splash, boy I enjoy those. ( In particular the one on Ultimate T2-- my next one to play)
And the room was engulfed in sound, the picture was so crisp, I was floored.
In short, best $500 I've ever spent.
