It is cool. I saw something recently about this on one of my Science cable channels. They've already developed a fiber that's very close to what the article is discussing.

They had a rope of this fiber that was no more than 4 -5 inches thick that was hanging from a crane and attached to ten cars. It slowly started lifting and it was able to hold all 10 cars. It's pretty amazing what science can do. It's also amazing how clueless they are about so many things at the same time.
