View Full Version : ASTEROID!!!! FOR REAL THIS TIME!!!!
So I'm reading this article on Christmas Eve. (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/12/24/asteroid.ap/index.html)
There's a 1-in-300 chance that a recently discovered asteroid, believed to be about 1,300 feet long, could hit Earth in 2029, a NASA scientist said Thursday, but he added that the perceived risk probably will be eliminated once astronomers get more detail about its orbit.
OK. A little worrisome, but after further study, these things always get ruled out as next to impossible.
Then I read this. (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/space/2004-12-25-meteor-potential-hit_x.htm)
The asteroid's chance for hitting Earth on April 13, 2029 has now been categorized as a 4 on the Torino Scale. The level 4 rating - never before issued - is reserved for "events meriting concern" versus the vast majority of potentially threatening asteroids that merely merit "careful monitoring."
The Dec. 24 update from NASA states:
"2004 MN4 is now being tracked very carefully by many astronomers around the world, and we continue to update our risk analysis for this object. Today's impact monitoring results indicate that the impact probability for April 13, 2029 has risen to about 1.6%, which for an object of this size corresponds to a rating of 4 on the ten-point Torino Scale. Nevertheless, the odds against impact are still high, about 60 to 1, meaning that there is a better than 98% chance that new data in the coming days, weeks, and months will rule out any possibility of impact in 2029."
OK. We're down to 1 to 60ish. But there's still no reason to worry, there's still a 98% chance it's not the end of the world. heh heh heh..........
Current Estimates. (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/ip?2.2e-02)
2.200000000% chance of Earth impact
or
1 in 45 chance
or
97.80000000% chance the asteroid will miss the Earth
I don't like where this is headed.

I just realized it'd take a miracle for me to live that long, and now I'm kinda bummed I'll miss the devastation. If there is an afterlife, I'd love to say:
"Yeah, I died when a huge asteroid crashed into me" or
"I died when the bulding I was in collapsed in the super-mega-ton earthquakes following impact" or
"I died when a superheated megafast wall of dust vaporized me" or
"I froze to death in the ultra frigid sun-less eternal winter that engulfed the earth following impact" or
"I was beaten and eaten alive in the lawless aftermath of the impact, when all governments ceased to be and raving gangs of cannibals roamed the land, consuming all who entered their glare." or
"I was a member of a raving gang of cannibals and lived for a surprisingly long time following the devastation, feasting on the innards of countless innocents.
That'd rock.

A 1 in 45 chance still gives us a chance, especially due to the vastness of space, but I hope this will wake up the world's govenments to realize that more man power is needed to spot these bastards that are wizzing by us every hour of every day.
As for even a small scale impact, in geoligical time, we're due for one.

Yeah, cheer up HBox! As Se7en kindly reminds us in his sig, we have four more years of W! And I'd say it's 50/50 that we'll at least have something close to your last two scenarios over the next 4 years! :)
On the (other) bright side:
This would eliminate the Social Security/Medicare funding problems; and

keep in mind, whatever size it is now, itll be smaller when it gets here, cause some, if not all of it, will burn up when it gets to our atmosphere. assuming it hits the earth being that big, factoring in surrounding damage, 1300 FOOT asteroid would be lucky to take out newark

Apparently, the probability has changed again. (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/2004mn4.html) Now it's not gonna hit.
Interesting thing is, the size has gone up to 450m, and the mass nearly doubled.
But when it was going to hit, the impact energy was going to be equal to 1500 megatons of TNT. The biggest nuke ever tested was 50 megatons, and that destroyed something like a 35km radius....

<p>A little trivia for you about how close we came to getting smashed:</p><p>On this day in 1972-A meteor blazes northward across North America, barely missing the Earth. At its lowest point, above Montana, the meteor reached an altitude of less than 60 km, low enough to trigger a sonic boom. It steadily gained altitude as it passed over Manitoba and disappeared into space. If it had collided with the Earth, astronomers believe the blast would have equaled the atomic explosions of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. <br /></p>
