View Full Version : Who is Your Favorite Caller?

I've been listening to some of the past 2004 shows of the boys, keeping a close ear on callers. I gotta tell you, "Gary" is one of the best callers on the show! (Hi Geary)
Always funny, in tune with the topic and show, gets to the point; and most of all doesn't want to see the remains of that Kitner Boy.
Anyone else have a favorite caller.
Happy New Year to all the Buddddiessssss

I wish Preset Radio Albert would call back.
That guy Gary is pretty good. He doesn't always hit, but he's not afraid to tank with a really whacked out call. He doesn't always call in as Gary, though. He uses a bunch of different names, but his voice is pretty recognizable. His early calls, he couldn't get through without cracking himself up. Ron picked up on this and started giving him a hard time about trying to get through the whole call. He's pretty similar to some of the nutty regular callers they got in NY.

I also started the "Impromtu Comedy Pyramid" which I see in the file library.

Seriously. The biggest difference between the NY based show and the DC based show is that, in general, the DC callers aren't as good. R&F are still great, but they don't have as much to work with generally with the DC callers. There are exceptions. I thought the comedy pyramid before Christmas about Jessica Simpson's father was strong. "Nutty" is my way to refer to the great gonzo callers from the NY days.

For one thing, they need to name themselves. I didn't particularily go for "The Hoarde King" calls, buy at least he had a good name. Even a good caller is "Gary"
Part of it is D.C., but I dont want to start that again.
Now that they're on in Fla, some of those really red rednecks should be checking in. Like Fez's bro. Good times.

You're right. It's not just DC. As Mojo pointed out a ways back, the Hideout currently gets a lot of the types of calls that R&F used to get in NY. Not sure why they were more likely to call in to R&F during the same PM slot in NY.

Some other memorable calls-
I did the "Tenacious See-Ya"
The "Sweet Caroline" (Mikey-D great adventure) that got dumped but Fez could barely breathe afterwards
I also started the "I'm gonna put on my radio and listen to Anthony call me a tool" on O&A which lasted for months.
Good times. I guess my favorite caller is me.

My point was that you need to have good regular callers. It's what makes them (Ron & Fez) your "radio friends" vs. a radio show.
Be it "Gary", "Joe Pooh" or "Bunny", when you hear them it's always a call back and call backs equal familiarity. They may not hit it every time, but rarely does everyone you hang out with.

Late nite shows always get a weider, funkier audience. R+F started (as you know) on late, built a following which followed the show around. Except mid day. Remember in NY the bad mid day callers?

Maybe the callers were not as good, but the guests were F'ing fantastic. Remember the time they had the women from the kid Beauty Contest on. She was as dumb as a rock and swore there was nothing wrong with those pageants.
It was one of the best R&F moments.
And while I'm at it; Thanks Janet Jackson for ruining radio . bitch!

Nothing beats late night callers. That's really what it ends up being over the much vaunted DCvs. NYC debate.
When they were on middays in NYC the callers were even worse than the average evening DC caller.
LATE NIGHT UBER ALLES. That's when the freaks finally stop being afraid to use their phones.
But honestly, I think it says a lot about the nature of callers these days that I really can't think of more then 2 or 3 "regular" callers in the first place (not counting people who also always show up on the show itself, like Crazy Jen).

Nobody will ever be better than the mighty BLIND PRESET RADIO ALBERT. He was the shiz.
KENNY was also a killer caller.
And...I think it was in 2001 (or maybe 2002) there was a guy who was trying to be "The Heavy Metal Caller" or something like that. He would only speak in a screamy, high pitched, excited voice. It kinda sounded like he was one of those DJ's that come on stage an introduce the next band. Ron really liked it. I looooved it...but I dont think he ever called again. Holy shit that was funny.
EDIT:
and that guy that would stay on the phone for an hour and just say 'Roonnnnn and Fezzzzz" over and over and over. They would put him on hold for 8 minutes...come back to him and he would STILL be there, just repeating "Ron and Fezzz" and stuff like that. Killer.

I'd like to give an opinion but since I live in the NYC listening area, I DON'T GET THE BOYS!!! Oh, wait, what's 102.7 playing now? A test pattern. They've had their best ratings since R&F.

Nothing beats late night callers.
This is absolutely the truth. The NY late night callers were a night and day difference from the kind of callers that called in from 7-11, and even worse the kind that called in during the afternoon shift when the boys covered the slot vacated when WNEW got rid of the Radio Chick. Late night callers just add something extra crazy to the pogram and it's great to listen to. I haven't heard a whole lot of the Hideout shows, but I agree the listeners who call in are very similar to the same kind that used to call in when R&F were on nights in NY.
As for individual calls, Tony from NY "What up boys", and back when little Gary would call in, as well as the guy who would always wake up his wife was hilarious. Kenny Allen and of course no one can top Iris.

What you are talking about is having a dedicated, core group of reliable, funny people who call all the time. It doesn't have to be a lot of these callers, just enough to keep things moving. For the most part the regular callers have been replaced by just regulars - Crazy Jen, Brian & Kathleen, Jafter, MB, Perrynoid, Elfish, Bobo, Mizzle - and regulars who IM, including ADF, some of whom get credit on the air - and by simply MORE different callers.
Especially now that they are on in three different markets just the volume of the calls is bound to go up. You still get to have your Cloominatis (one of my favorite regular callers, btw, although I liked it more when they let him through with bogus names), but every once in awhile there will be a little radio miracle, and a Present Radio Albert will land at your doorstep - and that, to me, is the bestest of all.

Don't forget, DC got R&F live 11 PM - 3 AM for a while, and we could call in as well. I haven't called in to the show since it came on WJFK in over a year, because for some reason I get all tongue-tied and useless. When I would call in at like 2 AM, you could just go completely apeshit (as long as you kept the call clean), and it made things much more relaxing.

I agree with Curtoid in that there aren't a lot of regular callers who are funny. A few have tried, but no one's been consistent. I like the voice of that Zardoj (sp?) guy, but sometimes the content isn't there. There's also that Old School guy, but he tends to ramble and rarely has a point. The comedy pyramids, however, have been much improved. I feel that NY pyramids failed about as often as the DC ones do. Perhaps the comedy highs on the NY pyramids were greater, but I may be selectively remembering. The instant feedback isn't as good as it used to be. Part of that is that Ron seems to go to the callers more often so not as many good IM's make it through. The other part is that it's there aren't as many consistently good IMers like there used to be (as in Ikeaboy and Sheepy, et al). The competition to get a good IM in isn't as high as it used to be.

They were two totally different shows. 7-11 was great, more comedy and party oriented.
Late nites was more freaky, weird. Great for that time slot (Like Art Bell) but wouldn't work at any other. Callers were both real good, but different. Both were great shows, just very different.
BTW I remember MANY times during 7-11 in NYC, Ron saying "We have the best callers in radio". He almost never says it 7-11 in DC. I actually cant remember once.
As for individual calls . . and of course no one can top Iris.

One of the best callers ever was Shermie. He was sincere and
wasn't trying to be funny, but Ron took the ball and ran with it.
It was a beautiful thing, Brother-Man.<br />

My favorite would be Iris, and Paulo if he could be considered a caller...

Crazy Jen is my all -time favorite caller, because R&F knew what to do with her,and for me it never got old.Paul O's wife made me laugh hysterically.Blowhard pissed me off.The football betting guy bores me to tears.Other notables,Hideout guys,Mikey D,Perrynoid,Clementine, even UFO Phil in small doses(schtick promoting his website),and probably the guest I'd most like to hear is Ron Diaz, because it would be cool to hear his stories as a background for the history of R&F. I feel like I missed a lot of good stuff, and he might unlock the chains of old memories, bits and goofs.SO WHAT if it's too uncomfortable for R&F to relive the past.Fuck em.
