Will Eisner - DEAD!

To a lot of people the name Will Eisner may not be recognizable, though he was the artist behind one of my favorite all time comic book characters The Spirit.

Will Eisners artwork and story telling styles raised the bar in terms of bringing genuine art to comics. The stories were rich and funny, original and even helped to inspire me to design and to want to learn to draw.

As a kid I used to make my own custom comic books and write stories and they were inspired by independant artists like Will Eisner. I look at comic books like Hellboy as being similar in style and humor as the works that Will Eisner put together.

This sucks...but at his age, you knew it was coming.

As an artist, the guy was a genius, and his influence on ALL kinds of design and illustration and art over the last 50 years cannot be calculated.

The first few years are kinda rough, but the bulk of his signature series, "The Spirit," still hold up today against any other comic or mystery novel on the market, easily.

Beyond that, the guy created the "graphic novel" format with his great 70's books like "A Contract With God," "Minor Miracles," and "Last Day In Vietnam." His series of "city people" stories are fantastic.

In terms of loss to the comic world, this is even bigger than Jack Kirby dying a decade ago.

In the December 8, 1946, Spirit Section entitled "The Killer," Eisner introduces us to Henry, a henpecked nebbish who finds new validation and confidence once he's drafted, until the day he's discharged, and finds himself back in his miserable job with his harridan wife. Circumstances place a gun in his hand, and the viewpoint changes, as we now see the world literally through Henry's eyes as he makes some drastic changes in his life, in the process rescuing the kidnapped Spirit.


One of my favorite stories of all time.
