View Full Version : The Consequences of Dropping Out

I'm going to Stevens Tech right now, and, in short, it sucks. I hate this school. I want to transfer out, but school already started and it's too late. So if I wanted to drop out and go to another school next year instead (that's how much I hate this place), what would the consequences be? Would I have to make up the lost semester during the summer? Could I transfer to another school mid-semester?
O, and another reason why I wanna leave is because I've realized that I hate engineering, and I want to do something different. Completely different.

Don't drop out. If you do, you'll never get to meet Cat Stevens at graduation....which I thought was the whole point...

But they make good money don't they? I wished that I had stuck to engineering when I was in school in Mississippi but hindsight is only 20/20.

Sure, they make good money. But it's not exactly something I like doing. I dunno, I've been extremely stressed out lately, and it's all just piling on at once. I'm really not making any friends, and everything just sucks.

stay with it...go into electrical engineering. you would be shocked at how many opportunities there are in that field. If i could do it all over again i would go that route.

Smack digga diggaty. You're right. It should be 50/50. No wonder I didn't follow through with engineering. Numbers make my head hurt. Now I feel dizzy.
I wasted like 4 semesters of college as an engineering major before I decided that it wasn't for me (my dad was a civil engineer and he wanted me to follow in his footsteps). It was tough for me to finally decide to go a different route. I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do. It was between psychology or education. Hence I chose psychology and worked in the field for 9 years. So here I am today trying to bust into the education field. Maybe a couple of years I'll check out engineering again, if my Soc. Sec. dosen't kick in.
Have you talked to your acedemic advisor regarding switching majors or going to the school that you may be interested in to see if your credits will transfer over? When I transferred from Mississippi to up here in NJ I lost a couple of credits. (guess that D in English literature wasn't good enough for them).
Stevens Tech huh. My dad looked into me going over there or NJIT a long time ago but I ended up in Mississippi.

The thing was that I had wanted to give it a semester and then decide whether or not I wanted to leave. My mom said to at least give it a year (she was, at the time, unemployed, and I recieved a lot of scholarships to Stevens and she didn't want to lose them. Plus, she had no idea where she was gonna end up. She got her job back in October). Anyway, I was told to at least give it a year, and I knew I'd end up really wanting to leave by the second semester, but I had no real choice. And now I'm stuck in this crappy situation.
I haven't talked to my advisor yet (my sister has already recommended that). I don't even know what I want to do instead. I'm just in a shitty situation right now.

Do you have an idea of which college you would be interested in? Cuz you have to find out if they have an applying deadline if you want to transfer there and other criteria.
Maybe you're not ready for college at this time. Take some time off, get a job. Take some classes at the local community college to see if anything interest you that you would wish to pursue further.

I've decided that I'm going to drop out, only because I can't wait to just sit out the entire semester before transferring. I'm going to get a job and then see if I can make up the missed semester at whatever school I enroll in during the summer. I just need some time off. I'm not just quitting school completely. I think I made the wrong decision as to what kind of career I want to have.

Can't you just switch to a different major at Steven's?
Bachelor of Science
Applied Physics
Engineering Physics
Chemical Biology
Chemistry
Computational Science
Computer Science
Information Systems
Mathematical Sciences
Pre-Dentistry
Accelerated Pre-Dentistry
Pre-Medicine
Accelerated Pre-Medicine
Bachelor of Arts
Art & Technology
English and American Literature
History
- American History
- European History
- Interdisciplinary
Music & Technology
Philosophy
Science and Technology Studies
Turkish, Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies
Pre-Law
Accelerated Pre-Law
Just switch to Info systems or something easy like that for a semester.. it's what I did at Rutgers, and so did everyone else who dropped out of engineering. Maybe not that major exactly but no one dropped out, just switched to something easier.

My routines? That's the least of my worries.
Honestly, I just do not like Stevens at all. Plus, I have a lot of personal issues that are making me hate it even more (i.e. depression, etc.) I'm going to start seeing a therapist because of it, and I think I need some time off.
As for a new major, I'm still undecided. I just think I have to go somewhere else, and maybe live on campus too. The transition has been tough and the work hard (both expected) but there is just a lot of other things that are factoring into all of this and making the experience worse than it has been.

you will be more than fine. do not even worry about the missed semester. It means nothing. who really cares if it takes you 5 years to graduate instead of 4. The important thing is to like what you are doing.
I just graduated in december '04 (yay for me). I have a degree in electrical engineering and one in computer engineering. I will tell you that if you heart is not into it, you will never survive cause it only gets harder and more intense.
Take the semester and the summer to think about what you want to do. Work and save some money. In a few months, start to apply as a transfer student to some other schools. Hopefully a bunch of your stevens credits will transfer, if not maybe you will be lucky enough to be in a class with some hot freshmen chick!
Either way, there is no wrong answer. they are all good options. Drop out now before you do shitty this semester and make transferring harder. look into what you want to do, and go for it.

My fear is that if I drop out and apply to other schools, they'll see me dropping out as failing to adjust to school or something and, therefore, be unfit for their college. My GPA for the first semester is a 3.07, so its not really the work that's killing me. I've just discovered that I hate Physics and Calculus, which are two main things in engineering, so I'm pretty much screwed.

I know all about physics and calc my friend. I never thought it would end. By the time I was in differencial equations I thought it could not get any worse. then came laPlace Transforms.
anyway they will not look at it like a negaitve. You have a very good GPA. just say you dropped out for personal reasons or a family emergency and thats all. they will not care.

Yikes more numbers. I remember when I had to take those 2 classes for engineering. It was bad that I had to take Chemistry and Calculus in my first semester. But when I failed both of them, you knew I had to take them eventually. And just my luck I took Physics when I had to repeat Calculus. But those credits transferred over after I passed them so that took a chuck of the pre-equisittes that you had to fulfill before graduation at the college I transferred to.
I don't think you have to explain in detail at all why you're dropping out. And besides, since your changing majors it shouldn't make a whole lot of beans either.

Just got back from talking with him. He gave me the name of two deans, one of which he told me would probably help me the most. Of course I went to go and see that dean, and it ended up he was at lunch. The only time he'll be back is when I have class. So I'm gonna see him on Monday (most likely tuesday though, because I'm not coming in if theres a foot of snow on the ground.)

Ok, might not be dropping out now. Instead, I'll take the minimum credits required for a full-time student by dropping Calc and Physics, and get a job as well, since I'll have more time. Plus, I can figure out where I'm going to go and what I'm going to do. YAY!

DONT QUIT!!
You may not like engineering now because you have come up against some challenges.. Anything that is worth having is going be difficult and make you think that its more than you can handle. BUT if you stick with it, I promise you that it gets better. FINISH what you start and you will have greater success in life. If you quit now, every time you reach a stumbling block in your life you will look back at this situation and remember how good it felt to quit when you werent as happy as you wanted to be.

I'm not dropping out. Instead, I dropped all my engineering courses, and I'm taking three humanities courses in there place. At the same time, I'm looking for schools to possibly transfer too (and majors to choose). The cool part is that, with my new schedule, I don't have a class past 1:30 the entire week.
I think I might do something in business. But I'm not sure yet. Thanks to everybody for their advice.

In the big scheme of things it will be a MICH bigger mistake if you get a degree and got a job in a field you hate. Getting an engineering degree has a specific purpose of getting you a job in a related engineering field. If the math and science isn't your thing then change. In the long run you'll be more miserable when you get a job in that field. Sure, you don't have to go into engineering afterwards but most people do.
One thing I would suggest is try to talk to the faculity and especially find some faculity that actually worked in industry. You should try to get a true feel for what a career in electrical engineering (or just engineering is like). I got a degree in Mech engineering and when I graduated I still really had no clue what a mechanical engineer did. It was a little different for me becuase I like the material. But once I got a job, I was bummed because I didnt fit in there and found the work boring. So I left after 2 years and went back to school, giving up the salary to be a poor grad student.
The point is, if its not working for you try to figure out why and dont be afraid to make changes for the better. People are right when they say that in the end 4 or 5 or even 6 years to complete a degree means nothing in the scope of your life. Its never too late to change.
EDIT: I guess I should have read all the replies before I posted huh? Anyway congrats on making what seems to be a good decision.

Ya, but when the classes are over in less then 4 months, and you have to take a lot of classes to make up for lost time in September you'll be there all day and hitting the books all night.
