View Full Version : Chicago Cubs 2005 Season

I have absolutely nothing to say about them at this point, since most of their trades in the off-season have been just dull (though hopefully smart) tries to consolidate a younger team for the next few years. But you know what? Who fucking cares? I'm sick of tripping over New York threads. GO CUBS.
Though there's talk they may go for Magglio Ordonez off of the White Sox, which would be cool, if he's healthy.
Sammy's still a bitch.
Watching the games on TV are gonna be weird, since the Cubs had to replace both Caray and Steve Stone.
Oh well...I still can't wait until the season.

Yeah, especially since the guy was just speaking the truth. God forbid anyone criticize the Cubs for completely blowing things last year in the last few weeks of the regular season.
It's gonna be very strange with two completely new voices in the booth.
And the next person to compare the Cubs with the Royals is getting a curbing.

Seeing as how Mojo is probably the Cubs fan on the board, the Cubs probably don't need their own thread, and any Cubbie news would probably be more appropriate in the general MLB thread. With that in mind, I'd like to congratulate Mojo on an excellent abuse of mod power!

If that IM conversation of a Nationals thread can stay open, I'm bringing this bitch of a thread back...EAT A DICK, HATERS!

Cubs clobber the Reds tonight, 7-1, putting them right at .500. Prior's pitching like that DL stint ain't no thang, which is good since Kerry Wood is stinking up the joint and allowing runs left and right.

FUCK! Cubs dog it up and lose 4-0 to the Cardinals and head back to .500 at 8-8.

Dempster pitched a good one, allowing only 4 hits and one run over 7 innings, but then the relievers came in and fucked it up, allowing 2 homers.

Cubs ended FOUR innings with one or more runners in scoring positions and couldn't sink one in. Not with the way Kerry Wood's been playing. His stuff has been there, but it's been even wilder than usual.
TheMojoPin
04-21-2005, 08:19 PM

Kerry definitely needs to reign it in. And it's not even like he's having bad games...just bad innings. And it's always the first or the second, though usually just the first.

He'll get in there and blow that inning, giving up multiple runs and hits, and then for the next 4-5 innings he's in he's right on task, striking guys out and not allowing any more runs or sometimes even any hits. But by then the damage has been done since he lets the opposing team score 3-4 runs or more in just the first inning, and that's hard for ANY team to climb back from.

As long as he stays healthy, I think he'll back on top form within a couple of weeks. My main concern is their lack of a good fastball closer. Remlinger is supposed to be that guy, but like debacles like the last game with the Cardinals showed, he needs to step it up and be more reliable to shut down batters in those final innings, 1-2-3.

The pitching was back on today! Wood gave up two runs, including a HR, but only allowed 3 hits and struck out 8! Altogether, Cubs' pitching had 12 K's in their 5-2 victory against the Pirates today, keeping them at 9-9 and tied for second. 1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Jesus, if I were a Cubs fan I think I would totally sick of Wood. This is one of those guys who is always talked about in the future tense, a guy who has the potential, a guy who could be a twenty game winner, a guy who could become a perennial Cy Young. This has been going on now for like six years. I understand that his violent delivery creates havoc with that arm, and might very well limit him to this role for the rest of his career, but there has to reach a point where enough is enough and maybe trading him becomes an alternative.

So Mojo, with Nomar and Todd Walker now down and your middle infield depleted the Phillies have Placido Polanco to trade casue he could really help you guys. The only question is who would the Cubs give up for him? Are the Cubs in dire need of a 2nd Baseman that they may give up a frontline pitcher like Wood or Prior? I doubt it but just let me make myself moist with the prospect of the whole thing. Do the Cubs have anyone else good they could give up for a trade for Polanco? Like an outfielder or perhaps a catcher? Knowing the ineptitude of our GM Ed Wade we would give up Polanco for a bag of dirty sweat socks and maybe some Ivy clippings so we could grow some on our outfield walls.

Nevermind that they lost the one BEFORE that by WALKING the winning run home...

I mean, who are these guys, the Yankees?

What a stinking slump. They've stranded dozens of base runners in the last 10 games...it's really getting absurd. That's a weird thing about the Nats. DC is such a transient,
everybody's from somewhere else town, that you play a HOME game and the
ballpark (in this case Stadium) is filled with fans of the other team.
Probably happens alot.
Started off as a pitcher's duel the first 3 fullinnings, and then opened up intoa hitting fest between both teams...Zambrano pitched a fit, literally, when the Nats started to get the best of him in the 5th and hit 3 straight hits between 3rd and 2nd...so he started hitting guys and came out that inning with an "injury."

But hey, baseball at RFK is fun...lotta Nats fans there and really into it...good vibes, ton of Cubs fan, good food cheap for a ballpark...great weekend of baseball!
1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Moronic 5-4 loss to the Nats today, almost singlehandedly due to Neifi Perez eating a dick and making TWO of the dumbest errors I've ever seen a supposedly capable second baseman make.

The Cubs need their big hitters working, NOW. Lee is sliding down, going only 1-13 this whole series. Arams is missing too many games with back problems...Nomar and Walker are still out...and Patterson is WAY underperforming and failing totally as the lead off hitter. The rest of the team is hitting solidly, avergaing a good 5-6 hits a game (pretty much all singles), but there's noboy stepping up who supposedly has the power to hit them home. The pitching is keeping the opposing teams (usually) to 3-4 runs or less...combine that with lower order Cubs getting stranded on the bases by the "big" hitters nearly every time they're up and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Shape it up.

Bumping Corey Patterson from the leadoff hitter spot and putting Hairiston in there really kicked the top of the lineup into gear today...as it should be.

That said, they still stranded guys in scoring positions FOUR fucking times today...they should won this won by 2-3 runs at least.
1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Alright, yeah, I'm basically talking to myself here, but I need to vent...I guess this is my Cubs blog...

Tomorrow starts a three game home series against the White Sox. They'll then do three games on the Southside against the Sox later in the season. SIX fucking games against the goddamn White Sox this season...and that's how it's been every season since interleague play began. And I'm fucking sick of it.

Now maybe this applies to Mets/Yankees fans, too, but for me, always pitting teams that share a city every year is getting tedious. First of all, it's just too negative. I don't know how it is in NYC, but in Chicago, the Northside (Cubs) hates the Southside (Sox), and vice versa. All these crosstown games are hideous...tons of fighting and ugliness. It just makes every one of these games a real downer f an experience. Why not bring some OTHER AL leagues to town that we don't usually get to see at Wrigley, like the Twins or the Tigers?

Basically, the crosstown series schtick is overrated and played out. Give me some more variety, and quit trying to erupt a goddamn civil war in Chicago every year with this bullshit. I know the Sox probably are desperate for it, since the three games the Cubs come to their home field is probably the only three times a season they'll seel the place out...and I'm NOT saying this just because the Sox are doing so well this year. I thought the exact same thing the last time the two teams met up, and the Cubs swept the sox.

Worst of all, two years running, adjusting the schedules to make this happen means the Cardinals get to play KC for six games in the season...not fucking fair!

So what's the NYC opinion on the Subway Series?

Good thing the Cubs actually swept them in that little mini-series.

Fuck...I just did the math, and the Cubs are averaging like .245 and just 3 runs a game in May...what a fucking cop-out with the hitters they're supposed to have.

If they can shape up against the Sox, as much as I hate the idea of the series, it could hopefully kick the team into shape if they win 2-3, or even magically sweep. After that, 6 games against the Astros and Rockies, which should just be handed to them...mentally, if they get some kind of 5-6 game streak going somewhere in these 9 games, I think it's what they'll need to get back on track, especially with Walker and Wood due back soon.

Best hope for the Sox series...the pitchers. Maddux, Zambrano and Prior for the Cubs...the Sox have to settle for guys like Contreras and Orlando Hernandez at the plate, with no sign of Garland and Buehrle, thank Christ.
1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

I'm probably fucking jinxing everything by posting this, but man, I'm impressed.

I'll fully admit that over two weeks ago I thought these guys were toast. I was gonna enjoy the rest of the season, but any thought of the Cubs actually even making the wild card sput, much less anything else, seemed a HUGE long shot at best.

Well, I was wrong.

Apparently Prior taking that line drive to the elbow sparked something in the rest of the team, because they went on to win 7 straight from that game onwards, a streak that was only broken when they lost 1(!) game to the Padres in the 4 game series out in San Diego that just ended today.

What a great end to a great west coast road trip...they sweep the Dodgers and then take the 1st place Padres 3 games out of 4. Glendon Rush all but shut the Padres down the first game, keeping them to just 3 hits and a no-run shut out AND he pitched the entire game with a couple of great defensive plays. They lost the 2nd game 6-2, but then came blasting back in the next and took it 11-5. And then tonight they shut out the Padres again, knocking 'em down 4-0, with Zambrano pitching and allowing only 3 hits in 7 innings and pulling 7 K's.

Now all of a sudden they're sitting pretty at 5 games over .500, first in the WC spot, and just 5 games behind the Cardinals. Derrek Lee continues to dominate as a hitter, hitting .385 as of today, with 17 HR's and 51 RBI's. Neifi Perez has exploded out of nowhere as the shortstop and as the leadoff hitter...it's pretty much "Nomar WHO?" at this point, though it's great to see No-mah back in the dugout after all this time. In the meantime Perez is playing at an all-star level, acting as a great leader both offesnively and defensively...a pro all the way. Patterson, on the other hand, is pissing everyone off. Guy refused to bat leadoff, and keeps sliding down the lineup, striking out WAY too many times and still swinging like he only wants homers. Guy has HUGE potential, and he just continues to undercut his performance.

At this point I'm most concerned with LF. They don't really have anyone who can dominate that spot offensively OR defensively, and if they're gonna make some trade action this year, that's where they need to look.

Still a tough month ahead...3 game series in Toronto begins tomorrow, and then they play the Red Sox, Yankees and White Sox all before June is over, so they've got plenty of trials by fire ahead of them to see if they can stay hot...hopefully Wood will have some more control in his pitching when he's due back within the next couplea weeks, since Prior optimistically will be back by August at the very latest, and they need to fill the gap they have in their starting pitching every 3-4 games (Toronto gets to face one of the AAA kids on the first night, Koronka, though he held his own his debut appearance against the Dodgers and got the win).

But in the meantime they've won 11 of their last 14, which is pretty cool.

GO CUBS!!!

So the Mojo/Spoon challange begins! Ok, the Chicago/Toronto series begins. But hell, it should be fun for us too. Don't worry about AAA pitchers, the Jays have two as starters so far, with perhaps another about to be called up. Not due to injuries, but lack of ability by our former starters. Which is worse? At least you don't have to match up against Halladay. He's been on fire this year since his shoulder has healed (hurt him all last year). And why so down on NOMAR? Isn't he an all-star this year? Obviously I joke, but the fact he's an all-star should alone be enough to change the voting rules and the world series factor. As for Lee, he's been amazing so far! I hope the Jays are smart enough to hit him like Prior (just kidding).

Hey, I'm not down on Nomar! I like the guy...but since taking his slot on the roster, Neifi Perez is on fucking FIRE. If he continues at this rate, they're gonna have to shuffle things around if Nomar comes back this year, because Neifi simply is too fucking good to be benched...maybe Walker will be taken out and Neifi can take 2nd and let Nomar back in at SS.

But yeah, I'm looking forward to the series with the Jays...first game is on WGN!

Lee only had one hit today, but at least it was a double...

I've seen the Cubs in person 4 times so far this year, and over those games Lee only had 1 hit total, and I've never actually been watching a game live when he's hit one of his 17 home runs, so it seems the guy can rip it up...just not when I'm actually watching the goddamn game.

Nice 2-0 win today, preventing the sweep by the Jays with a 7 inning shut out, only 2 hits and 6 K's, all by the rookie starting his 3rd game...the same rookie that hit an RBI double and then was batted in himself to score the 2nd, making it a hell of a day for Sergio Mitre.

Kerry Wood did really during another sim game today, so it's looking up for having him back soon, and Prior is taking catches, so his long road back is already under way.

Cubbies finally get a break tomorrow after 20 straight games before playing the Red Sox for their first visit to Wrigley ever. I want the Sox to whup the Cardinals tonight so the Cubs can creep up to 6 games back, but also don't want the Sox coming to town with ANY kind of momentum...oh, what to do, what to do...

I was hoping they could at least pull 2-3 against the Cards so the Cubs could slide into 4 or even 3 games out...oh well.

Not a bad 20 game stretch for the Cubs, especially since so much of it was a road trip out west...13-7. Should be a good match up this weekend, since both the Cubs and Sox are playing at about 4-5 games over .500. All of 'em are gonna be on TV, so I can't wait.

GO CUBS!!!

Sorry Mojo, Blue Jays 2 games to 1. Finally someone cooled off the Cubs. Congrats on beating Halladay on Wednesday. The Jays hitters just couldn't make good contact with the ball. It would have been nice if the Jay's batters were more patient in the early innings, as this strategy worked much better in the late innings. It seems to be the biggest problem with the team when up against a pitcher in control. Their very very young and get anxious, hence swinging away. They don't strike out that often, I think ranked in the top ten in MLB, but they don't make good contact. Also, the Jays pitched a rookie in this series, Gustavo Chaucin, and he pitched a gem getting his 6th win on the year. Not bad for a rookie who also sports a 3.04 ERA.

So Mojo, what's your feel for the Jays now. Who impressed, who didn't live up? Obviously Mitre was impressive in his third start, but when did Barrett start hitting like that? Overall, good series.

I'm not quite at saying they've "cooled off"...it was just two in a row, and the Jays are a decent team. I think it was an exhausting road trip out west, pretty much all late night games, and they still managed to sweep the Dodgers and take the 1st place Padres 3 out of 4...a 7 game effort like that on top of a 7 game winning streak is bound to stall for a game or two, and the Jays were in the right place at the right time.

That said, the boys from Toronto looked good on the field. Trsut me, Cubs fans are just as shocked as anyone else that Mire came out and dominated against Halladay. A very pleasant surprise...overall, the bats quieted down for the Cubs. Derrek Lee was held to just 1 or 2 hits a agame at best...but that's OK, it's time to unleash on Boston.

Yeah, you're right about Barrett. He's been showing signs with his offense and defense that he's paying attention to his coaches and the older players, and his performance is really shapping up. Nice way to bottom out the line up before the pitcher.

Woooooof.

Bottom of the 8th, and Cubs taking it hard, back 8-1 against the Sox...gotta give the Boston boys credit...some beautiful hitting tonight and Wakefield obviously woke the fuck up, holding the Cubs to just 4 hits.

More worried about the series with the Marlins tomorrow...the Fish are slumping big time, but the Cubs are tossing up their two newbies to pitch the first two games with Prior and Wood still out, and the Marlins have their big throwers all three nights. But hey, if you want a team to win, they gotta play the big boys...

Nice game, Sox.

Hey Mojo. There are rumors the Cubs are on the
verge of acquiring Gary Sheffield. Firstly, how do you feel about it?
And secondly, could you tell us Yankee fans anything about Sergio
Mitre, Jason Dubois and Corey Patterson?

Mitre looked great in his last outing against the Jays. If you have patience against him, it seems he will walk a few. However, he outdueled Halladay for a 2-0 win in his last start I saw.

On another note, the Jays came through for your Cubbies in game one. Already as effective as the yanks.

Mitre is a rising star, that's for sure. The guy has been Maddux-like with his control of the ball, that's for sure...it's incredible how he he seemingly will not allow to let the ball leave the infield. He pitched ANOTHER shut-out last night, keeping the Marlines to just 5 hits in 9 full innings, with like 85+% of his first pitches strkes, so the kid clearly has the stuff, and I think the Cubs would be making a mistake in trading him. I'm more inclined to think they should trade Wood instead at this point...any team who picks up both Dubois and Patterson is just begging to send their strikeout percentage through the roof. These two idiots swing at EVERYTHING like they're just allowed three pitches total at the plate. Dubois is an average fielder, so nothing really going for him...Patterson is at least great defenseively, but at the moment, that's about it. His offense has been REALLY lacking ever since he was injured in 2003.

Anyways, Cubs come back from two hard losses and trounce the Marlins, 14-0.

RAWK.

1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Ramirez has lit up in the last month+...he was hovering around .240 for April and most of May because of continuing back spasms (aggravated by cold weater, and Chicago's north side is still pretty fucking cold all the way up until June, but now he's been on fire...up around .305...his 12 game hitting streak ended today, but he's been batting .425 over the course of it, so he's backing Lee up HUGE. It helps big that both guys are fantastic infielders as well.

And man, I love Burnitz. Nothing flashy, but the guy is a great solid player...and he fucking hustles. Even if he's thrown out by a mile at first he runs his ass off all the way...it's a little thing, but hey, it's rare these days.

Alright, I know this is gonna sound like bitching of the nth degree, but can the Cardinals play some REAL fucking teams? The amount of under .500 teams they've played over the last two months compared to the amount of OVER .500 teams the Cubs have played in the same time is getting ridiculous. Cardinals start a series against the .400 Reds tonight...and then a series against the .338 Rockies! I can't WAIT for the Cubs to take on the Trash Birds this year...they ain't shit since they've been playing shit teams left and right. Cubs will take them at LEAST 4 games out of 6.

You must be feeling good about your team, Mojo. Wood came back and
pitched well yesterday and Prior's back too. Could be time to make your
run at the wild card. (I think the division's out of reach)You're only
one loss behind Atlanta.

Pitching seems back on track...Zambrano came pack and pitched a shut-out himself the other day, so the big 3 seem to be on top again...Maddux is stinking it up today with the Cubs down 5-2 against the Brewers just into the 3rd, but they still have a shot at holding on...the relief bullpen is REALLY strong now, with very capable starters Rusch and Mitre moving there for some much needed strengthening. Now if Baker could just wise up and bump Todd Walker up to the leadoff or #2 hole so someone is on base for Lee on a regular basis, we'd be in business.

And hey, don't count us out of the division yet...8 games back, but we're only just now at the All-Star break, and we still have to play the Cardinals 6 times this year...Wild Card would be great, but they better not give up on the division.

Hey, great! Lee's out of the game with Atlanta tonight in the 3rd inning with a probably shoulder/back injury! Fan-fucking-tastic! Outside of Maddux striking out 5 Braves in a row (And just got his 6th as I type this), this is shaping up to be a dismal series down south. The Cubs are hitting against 3 no-name pitchers in 4 of these games, yet are struggling to get more than 3 runs...I know the season is still only half over and they supposedly have a shot at the Wild Card, but this is just fucking frustrating. Their pitching comes back healthy is keeping the opposing teams to 4 runs or less each game, but the offense has just DIED since Prior and Wood came off the DL. What the fuck?!?

Dusty Baker is just a hole as a manger. He needs to be gone after this season, or sooner, unless and out and out miracle happen. The fact that he tolerates hacks like Corey Patterson as a LEADOFF hitter game after game is horrible. He needs to be traded ASAP...

Is he trying to get fired? Why continually bump guys like Corey Patterson and Neifi Perez in and out of the leadoff spot and always bench a guy like Jerry Hairston, jr., who has like a .395 OBP (3rd best in the NL) as a leadoff hitter? And keep him benched altogether and bring in guys like JOSE MACIAS instead?!? I'm completely at a loss...this season hasn't looked darker...

On paper, he SHOULD be one of the best players in the entire league...serious hitting power, ridiculous baserunning speed, fantastic defense...but man, the guy is in a MONSTROUS slump, and has been since he was injured in 2003. I don't know, maybe something "broke" in him that year, but I'm still wary about trading him away just because of his potential alone.

The Cubs still need to make a decent trade this year...and honestly, they should think of packaging someone like Maddux or Wood with a younger player like Jason Dubois to get something effective back in return. But if they trade away some prospects, I'm gonna go tear down the Tribune Building myself. The only bright light at the end of the tunnel is that within a season or two, they'll be swarming with top quality farm players. Now, if they can just get someone who is the OPPOSITE of Dusty Baker and can utilize younger players and rookies alongside veterans, we'd be getting somewhere.

Oh, PLEASE. You're trying to pull the injury card against the Cubs THIS year? Do you realize how many people we had out when the Cubs played the Padres? Nomar, Prior and Wood were all out, Walker had JUST gotten back for that series and made his post-DL return against San Diego...so quit your bellyachin'. The Padres got trounced by the Cubs. Suck on it.

Rusch isn't in the starting rotation right now. That was just while Wood and Prior were out, and he pitched around 3.20 or less the entire time...what's the problem? And how did this start that Prior is prone to injury? He's been injured twice on two freak plays...one in a collision with a baserunner and the other when he had a friggin' ball drilled right into his elbow. Are you trying to tell me other pitchers wouldn't have been injured in the same situations? They were flukes...outside of those two times, he's shown hardly ANY signs of being worn down by his own mechanics, as you seem to be implying. Kerry Wood on the other hand...seems like the guy is trying to throw his arm off all the time. And I totally agree, Maddux seams to have peaked as a starter. They should strengthen the relief pen by tossing him up there...he's still devastating for 3-5 innings, just not more than that. The Cubs can work with Rusch or Sergio Mitre as the 5th starter, easy. And they have a great closer in Ryan Dempster, too, so their overall pitching could use work, but it's so very far from being hopeless, or even bad.

I'll never get when people try and explain to me why my team is doing badly.
Well, mother nature may have been merciful on the Cubs as they get rained out in the top of the 9th against the Marlins, winning 8-6. Matt Murton made his debut with the Cubs tonight and went 2-3 with a single, double, a MONSTER bomb out to the center field wall and a walk, plus a run scored and an RBI. Hairston stepped up as leadoff with 2 hits, 2 RBI's and a run...the youngster rookies stepping up and slapping Baker's "veterans uber alles no matter what" theory right in the face.

Oh, and I LOVE the banner ad at the bottom of this thread.

1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Hey, 2 in a row! Taking out the Marlins, 8-2! Lee smacks a HR his first day back after being out three with a strained shoulder...Hairston goes 3-5 at leadoff with 2 singles and a double...I hope Patterson is paying a LOT of attention down in AAA.

Wood continues to pitch very well since coming back from the DL, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits and pitching 101 pitches into the 8th.

Adam Greenburg makes his rookie debut as a Cub and gets clocked right in head on the first pitch. Which leads to the runner being...CARLOS ZAMBRANO?!?
Go Cubbies! They take out the craptacular Reds 9-4 today with some monster hitting. Yeah, it's beating up on an easy team, but overall they've won 7 of their last 8 and are back at 2 games over .500, and most importantly the offense and the starting pitching are working in unison beautifully. Cubs starting pitchers over the last 8 games have a combined ERA of less than 2.00 and are all pitching at least 7 innings, helping spare us the wretched bullpen and just getting to the stellar closer that is Dempster if needed. To top it off, the starting pitchers have a collective 7 game hitting streak going, so fuck that goddamn DH bullshit.

The offense has just exploded since they kicked Corey Patterson down to the minors and putt Jerry Hairston and Todd Walker at the top of the line up. Walker and Derrek Lee went for back to back homers TWICE today, and Aramis Ramirez is proving he was worth the early exetnsion this year by staying above .300 and already at 22 homers. Lee is absolutely DESTROYING the ball...avergae is still at .373, he's got 30 home runs, 126 hits and 75 RBI's...plus, with Nomar due back in just two weeks, things are just looking better and better. They keep playing like this, they're gonna run right to the top of the WC heap. And yea, the division is a HUGE longshot, but they still play the Cardinals 14 times this year, so hey, who knows...they're due for a miracle one of these centuries.

Jesus...in their last 7 wins, they've scored 59 runs and allowed just 21. Nice.

Hey, Duke. Prior had 8 strikeouts on the win tonight. So there.

Lee holds at .376 with a pair of doubles and a single, but Aramis Ramirez goes HUGE with a 3-run HR in the 3rd and a 2-run dinger in the 9th, and a double and a walk to put him up at .310. And Todd Walker stretches his hitting streak to a dozen games with a pair of singles, kicking his average up to .312. When Nomar comes back in August and if he plays anywhere near his old Nomar level (ie-the way he was absolutely destroying the ball in spring training), the Cubs will have a seriously devastating lineup between these four.

Holy fucking Christ on a tricycle. I'm convinced I had at least 4 heart attacks in the last hour tonight.

6 words I'd never though I'd hear...Neifi Perez's game-winning grand slam. Against the Cardinals. At Busch. In extra innings. WOW.

What a goddamn series. Each game was fought brutally hard by both teams, and beautiful plays, hits and pitching all around. Zambrano pitching 9 full innings on Friday with 12 K's and no walks, but the Cubs lose it in extra innings to a great squeeze bunt. Saturday, Derrek Lee rocks the lead for the Cubs with a 2-run HR that puts him back at the top of all the Triple Crown categories. Tonight, Mark Prior pitches a crazy inning in the first, giving up a double and 3 solo HR's...and the locks it down leaves the Cards hitless and scoreless until he leaves the game in the 7th. Aramis Ramirez knocks his own deuce to bring the Cubs back in the 8th and, well...we know the rest.

Playing the Cardinals 11 more times this season, and I'm feeling a LOT better about it now, since I think 7 of those games are at Wrigley, too. If the Cubbies can pull at least 10 of 14 from Cards this year, they might have an honest to God miracle shot at the divison, especially if Nomar comes back healthy and the starters stay healthy (Wood, my eye is on YOU, you fucking letdown) and if Jim Hendry pulls something for the deadline that gets them a decent leadoff/OF guy and a reliever or two...

Man, I love baseball.

And CH, you're all class. I'll never say a bad thing about the Yanks again.

Oh, and Ryan Dempster needs to blow Neifi at this point. This is two nights in a row he's potentially fixed blown saves against (possibly) the best team in baseball. Last night Neifi made the beautiful catch that Pujols drilled right at him at short that he then flipped to Todd Walker to get the runner at 2nd before he could tag up.

Perez isn't an obvious all-star, but he's stepped up HUGE this year when Nomar went down. His offense is back to what he usually is (.270 or so, though he was up around .320 at one point this year), but his defense and unofficial role as the infield captain has really saved the Cubs' butts plenty of times.

How have the Cubs not gone out and actively searched for a real closer. Does the front office understand just how many games have been lost as a result of not having a reliable player to turn to in order o save games. I mean it isn't as though they don't have the talent to trade for some top talent with chips like Mitre and Pie as well as plenty of others in the minors. I like the cubs and want to see them in the playoffs, I sincerely hope they make a deal for a closer at the deadline. Wagner might be aiming way too high, but there will be guys available Guardado comes to mind.

C'mon, Dempster's had some close calls tonight and last night, but he's been rock solid as a closer. He's had like 14 out of 16 saves since taking over in that role, 13 of those came in a row. They need solid bullpen relief more than anything else when it comes to pitching. Ohman has rounded out and Rusch is getting back to his feet, but guys like Mitre, Novoa and Wuertz are all over the map. And don't even get me started on Remlinger. At this point, I'd almost like to see Wood have a shot at being a relief pitcher...Rusch stepped up when he had to start this year, so switch 'em around a week or two. Wood tends to pitch steller for 3-4 innings tops on average anyway...so utilize that limited fire.

And I just checked Dempster's ERA since becoming the closer. 1.79. And he got the win tonight, so he's had 15 out of 16 save conversions. Demp's FINE. And even though the Cards technically tied while he was pitching tonight. Luna was clearly out when he got tagged stealing second. It was close, but watch the replay and Neifi hit Luna's knee with his glove just before Luna's foot slid into the bag. Yeah, he was walked in the first place, but Blanco called for that 3-2 slider. Bad catcher move. Up until then, Demp had that inning shut down. And yeah, they tied...but he held it at that, against the heart of the Cardinals' lineup...and more importantly, against Pujols.

They need a solid leadoff guy (Hairston has stepped up, but I cringe every time a ball comes his way in CF. Until Gerut is healthy, they need someone better in CF.)...someone like Johnny Damon, who's been rumored as having said he'd like to play for the Cubs if he doesn't reach a deal with the Red Sox after this season.

1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Lee's best shot at staying up there would be for Aramis Ramirez to bat 4th after him. Nobody in their right mind would walk Lee to face a guy like Aramis with the numbers he's putting up...hell, the guy has 27 HR's and 73 RBI's himself already...Lee would have a LOT more RBI's this year if Dusty Baker had been able to find a 1-2 lineup situation that worked. Too much time spent trying to fit Perez and Corey "K-Pat" Patterson up there, leaving the bases empty when he'd knock one out. Now that they've got Hairston and Todd Walker before him, he's typically got at least one guy already one to help boost those stats.

But yeah, Lee's all class. The best kind of player...and with his hitting, people ignore that he's really one of the best, if not THE best 1st baseman in the NL. He's won his share of Golden Gloves, and his size comes in REAL handy when the throws are off, as last night proved with the winning out.
1979 << On the streets of your town... >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

Weak swinging strikeout there, Maddog!

Man, I still can't figure out why Baker isn't putting that new kid Murton in there every night. Each time he plays he performs. Put Hollandsworth back on the bench!

Wow, 1st player with 3000 K's, 300 or more wins and less than 1000 walks...nice!

WAY TO GO, GREG!

Really, if you think about it, it's pretty damn impressive given the type of pitching he's typically known for. All those years for the Braves and his few early with the Cubs and the last couple years, he's never been known as a big strikeout guy...just quietly getting 4-6 each game, getting the job done.

Tip that hat, sir. You deserve it.

Well done, Mets. You're now the SLIGHTLY better (by one game) mediocre NL disapointment. BRAVO!

0-4? 0-5? I can't remember which, but they're both equally useless. At least he was moving well on the field and out of the batter's box.

I'm so absolutely done with this season. And that doesn't mean I'll ever stop rooting for this team, but I have no illusions that this season is a complete cock-up from start to finish for the Cubs. Piss-poor off-season moves, a ton of key injuries, lack of faith in trying out the rookies, the implosion of Corey Patterson (which highlighted the crippling lack of a solid outfield defensively and a capable leadoff hitter), awful management at the hands of Dusty Baker and, worst of all, a painfully obvious lack of heart and effort by the team on the field. It's like once they realized they'd have to actually FIGHT day in and day out for the post-season once the ASTB break was looming, the engine ran completely out of gas. Game after game, with depressingly few exceptions, the whole team looks listless on the field and at the plate. And frustratingly, the starting pitching has held up. Even when there are disaster innings, guys like Prior and Maddux (even with his 4.00+ ERA) and even Wood and Zambrano have worked their asses off to keep the team within striking distance...and the offence does zippy.

Look at last night...they get blown out 9-6...but they still scored 6 runs and managed over a dozen hits! Today, Maddux has kept the Mets to just 4 hits and 2 runs for 6 innings, and the Cubs can only manage 3 hits (the first actually by Maddux!!!) and nothing else. This is the 5th start by Maddux this season where the guy has kept the opposing team to 3 runs or less and the offense sits on its collective hands. No wonder the guy isn't going to get 15 wins this year! He should be livid!

Worst of all, management keeps emphasizing that Baker is gonna be sticking around in Chicago, which just depresses the hell out of me, and shows that next to NOTHING will change for next season.

UGH.

UGH.

A team this heartless and a manager this gutless don't deserve a thread.

"There's always next year..."

And the year after that...and after that...and after that...and after that...and after that...
