Well, why the heck not?

Let's see. Its been an interesting off season...we've signed Vinny Cash-Stilla and tried to go after other guys like Odalis Perez but to no avail...I think Loaiza might be able to put it back together here....some guys just can't pitch in NY...but I did think they overpaid a lil for Cristian Guzman...Bowden worked with Jose Guillen before, but that guy seems too much like Raul Mondesi for me to trust him as a player...the proverbial million dollar talent and ten cent head...

I haven't heard anything new on the Sammy Sosa front...last I heard the Nats wanted the Cubs to pay almost his entire salary for this season, which i think the Cubswon't go for

We have locked up Vidro and Wilkerson for the time being thank God...

The auction of the team should be coming up soon, which should be interesting as hell....

I think we can be competitive at least, I don't expect us to do really anything for at least a few years...we're really an expansion team if you think about it...

I'm just glad baseball is back...

Yeah if all the original Senators fans were to have stayed true they would have followed to Minnesota or uh, Texas.

It's nice that there is another pro team close and a team that I guarantee will finish higher than my lovely Phillies. We really set the world on fire with our signings of Jon Leiber and Kenny Lofton. Oh, can't forget Jose Offerman.

Your Nationals have a nice team and have seemingly some desire to win.

Good luck and enjoy baseball back in DC. I know I will be coming to more games down there than I will in Philadelphia. I'll watch and root fo the Phils but until there is a change in the Front office, I won't be giving them any more of my money.

Do not knock Leiber Fluff. We made a HUGE Mistake letting him go. He was our best sp down the stretch and had a very good playoffs. He will be very good in the NL it usualy takes a tommy John pitcher a year to get right. He works fast and throws strikes. A very good signing for you

Typical transplant - those of us who have grown up around here and have waited our entire lives should be penalized forever because of shady deals, poor managment and outright lies that happened over 30 years ago - excellent reason why the 7th largest market, and the Nation's Capital, shouldn't have America's past time

I'd take the 16,000 people who snapped up full season tickets within the first week they were available over a Steven Bartman.

I can only hope that Leiber gives us some good outings. We just tend to always go after the pitcher/player over the hill gang and it's getting a little tired. You mean to tell me witht he money that is being printed at our new ballpark we couldn't have afforded a real centerfielder in Beltran and maybe a better starter in Pedro?

Sorry to derail here, just had to get that off my chest.

And yeah, I will let you guys down there know when I will be down. It's within striking distance for me to get down there.

Hey - don't dis the Mystics (4 time WNBA attendance champs) or the United, both with rabid (if very different) local fan bases.

And, as far as the Nats (N-A-T-S! NATS! NATS! NATS!), there is a whole generation of local people who have never felt comfortable cheering on the Orioles, and are out of their minds they are so excited. A few weeks ago, during a drizzly, grey weekend afternoon, I stopped by the inconveniently located Nationals team store at RFK, and the place was packed.

I really think there will be a 10 year honeymoon with the local fans - between the newness of having a team, and in 3 years when there is a new stadium.

Also, they will pull many of the tourists who will be looking for something to do in the summer when the Smithsonian museums close down at 5:30, and will even schedule their DC vacations around when their teams are in town.

So....

Does anyone else still think we won't support the Nats?

Nats expected to earn 100 million in local revenue (http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20050322-121618-3958r.htm)

The Nationals have sold more than 22,000 season tickets and more than 75,000 single-game tickets, producing more than $44 million in gate revenue.
Attendance at home games this season is projected by Nationals President Tony Tavares and industry analysts to reach 2.5 million. With an average ticket price of about $24, that would mean another $17 million in gate revenue.

In other news:

-We need a leadoff hitter....Chavez is good with the glove, but he can't hit his weight...I think he's hitting somewhere in the high 1's or low 2's...

-The pitching has been going pretty well. Loaiza, "And he shall be" Livan Hernandez and Tomo Ohka of all people have been pretty unhittable...Day killed the Marlins last week but he got pasted his last start

I think we'll have a pretty good ball club this year, but I don't think we'll win the East...there are a lot of better teams in front of us, namely the Braves and the Fish....but give us a couple years and a couple free-agent periods...

I've got tickets to 6 games so far - inlcuding the Cubs, the May 1st night game with the Mets, the July 4th Mets game and the second home game. This Saturday, any remaining tickets for the home opener finally go on sale - going to try and get some for that one.

Also, I have not been able to find the DC batting practice hats anywhere. Anybody know a good place?

Modells for the "DC" hat - Sports Authority for that sweet red "DC" jersey. Modells also had a sale on the regular white jersey - $49.00. Make your way out to Springfield Mall and you got both stores right there, plus "Lids" which has the "W" hat in all sorts of designs and colors.

Springfield Mall is such an awesome mall, even Princess Diana visited it 20 years ago!

can't help but being happy for the team since they finally have a home

root for. I frequenbtly stay down there at my relatives who live right
out MD214 in Bowie about a half hour from the stadium. I look more
forward to going to some Nats games this yeare than I do my own
Phillies. Not a grudge against the Phillies team per se just at the
management and their ineptitude to spend the money in the right spot. I
am quietly rooting for the Nats andhope they do indeed have a good
season. Not too good though cause I would like to believe the bullshit
hype that the Phillies have a shot of some sort.
Dumb-ass WRC channel 4 amazed me tonight. In the two hours that I had the news on tonight (from 4-6), they had about 10 stories about the Nationals, but not ONE mention of their win against the Braves today!!! It's looking like all they care about is the business of having a team, and not the actual performance of the team. I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I've thought about taking my kid to some games. One thing channel 4 did for me though, was change my mind about going. One of the stories they had tonight told me I'd be paying about 4 bucks for a coke, and I can't bring a half decent camera.

The game / the experience was incredible...time to "ramble"...

I was able to get four, crummy $7.00 tickets way out, above center field; got there really early to see Diamondbacks batting practice, and oggle Tracy Neal from Channel 9; took tons of pictures (none of these are mine, btw!); stood in a merchandise line too long to buy crap I'm sure I don't need; made the hike to the seats - big fucking football stadium! Ugh! Was able to get my $4.75 soda without waiting in any line - the trick was arriving VERY early.

Later in the game, lines for hot dogs, sausages and pizza were 45 - 60 minutes long. One friend that went with me had a nightmare experience trying to get food late into the game. I think most people understood that this being THE first baseball game with a brand new staff, that things like that would not run smoothly. Maybe the biggest fuster-cluck at the stadium was when we left, and everyone received a special "coin." SO unorganized! It was a mini-riot. Of course - they are now all over e-bay!

Other free stuff - inflatable clappers when we walked in and outside someone was handing out "No Taxation" t-shirts made up just for this day.

I saw a lot of Sentors jackets and shirts; I also saw a number of Expos hats and jerseys; a few Orioles fans came out to see the National League play; and I did see one older guy wearing his Homestead Grays hat and shirt. Very cool! There were kids there, but not as many as you would normally see at a game, but there were a lot of old timers there with their (adult) children and grandchildren. For the most part, the weather was perfect, and everyone had big, goofy grins on their faces everywhere you looked.

The always classy Kathleen from the Bronx and her fancy husband, Brian, showed up about 6pm, and we drank and laughed and watched a kickin' high school marching band before the game; I got to see the "White Chairs" in the upper decks, marked for when the old Senators like Frank Howard would slam a home run up there back in the 60s; some people boo-ed the President, but there were more cheers; it was very cool that that first pitch was the very same ball used for the last pitch 34 years ago; the fireworks were fun, as were the fly over, although at that point I thought it might be a BIT much! Security was everywhere - snipers! Snipers! Everywhere! It's funny, though - leading up to the game, in a stadium just blocks from the Capital Building, no scuttle about "Terrorist Threat." Hmmmmm...the skeptic in me wonders if this was LAST year, and the President was coming to this, if it had been different. Anyway, Bud Selig was booed, but Linda Cropp got the biggest boo, which (in hindsight) is unfair, considering the money she ultimately saved the city.

One of my favorite moments, though, was when all of the old Senators went out onto the field into their old positions, and then handed off the gloves to the new Nationals. All of these years, living in relative obscurity, even in the town they once played for, now being honored alongside these new kids, who just last year divided their home games between Montreal and Puerto Rico, and never had a home crowd this size. VERY COOL!

Then it was time for the enormous flag; singing "God Bless America" and the National Anthem; during the 7th Inning Stretch, Go Go legend, Chuck Brown, sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" which was just amazing!

Ahhhh...then the game, which was all even better than all of the stuff going on around it. THE STADIUM SHOOK! It was like the old Redskins games. How ironic will it be if DC becomes known as the rowdy/lou

They are on pace to get close to 3 million (!) people at RFK this
season! If only they didn't have such a goofy/lame new mascot! Ugh!

On
an unrelated note, I alternated my baseball watching between the Nats,
the O's and my god son, who is a starting pictcher for his college
baseball team. They had a big tournament and they won it in extra
innings yesterday, after being down 9-1 as late as the 7th inning. very
exciting game, even if I got sun burned, and they even brought my god
kid in for relief pitching when things were really looking dicey. When
the new polls come out, they might be in the top 10 in the country!

I
don't think I've ever been into baseball this much this soon into the
season; usually I'm still all about the Hockey, and don't even look up
until mid-late May. Incredible all the way around - DC is getting VERY
spoiled! haha!

Do you think Mondesi could help the Nats any? I've thought on it and I don't think he can, we've already got a pretty solid outfield with The Wilk, Guillen and Terrmel Sledge/Ryan Church/Marlon Byrd combo(although Terrmel's probably going be out the year)...You guys want to take Zach Day off our hands in exchange?

The Nats radio guys interviewed Bobby Cox t'other day and he remarked that they were really high on Kelly Johnson, and they were going to make him their everday leftfielder...They also asked him about the homer that was taken away and he said he hadn't seen anything like that in 40 years of baseball...

He seemed very nice...he always looked to me like an old curmudgeon in the dugout, but he had very positive things to say about the District and how things have improved from the days of the Senators..and Mazzone's interview today was pretty good too...
....We haven't seen the sun since '71Thanks Monsterone!!

Are you talking about Brian Jordan's homerun? That was rediculous. They really need to fix that foul pole situation.

I'd
be willing to trade any outfielder outside of Andruw for pitching.
They've got Johnson (who's 0-12) and the Langerhans/Jordan platoon.
Like I said earlier they've got to bring up Francouer eventually. Also
Andy Marte is due to come up as well. He could play outfield I've
heard. He's at third right now but I never ever want to see Chipper in
the outfield ever again.

Do you think it has ever happened before (in June) that if one team wins or losses both games of a doubleheader, it's the difference between ending up in a tie for first or alone in last in the division?

To me that's fucking crazy! However, this is what will transpire if the Mets do one or the other today. I'll post this in the Mets thread too.

this is a weird area. all these fans just jumped on a bandwagon of a
team im sure they gave 0 shit about last year. but since it moved

seeing people from DC gettin that excited about a team that wasnt an

these fans" - that doesn't explain the 20,000 season ticket sales that
happened before the season began, or the people all over the country,
at away ballparks, who have been showing up all season wearing "Nats"
hats and jerseys - people with either a connection to Washington, or
people who just like this team. As the weather gets better, and the
word gets out that it's easy to get in and out of the games, and the
team plays better, and there is more marketing on the team, of course
more people will come out.

You're talking about this area as if
people are retards where it comes to baseball. We haven't had a team,
we haven't been in a cave. Pretty much anyone over 40 who has lived
here forever never accepted the Orioles, and even those kids that were
raised on the "O's" are finding room for a National league team to root
for. I have friends who are transplants, with ties to the Yankees or
Boston, who have been to more Nationals games than I have. It's been a
long, long time but DC fans have a baseball team of their own to follow
in the summer, and what's even better (and what's even unexpected) is
how fun the NL East turned out to be this season.

I'm just happy I can burn my Texas Senators jersey.

here is why its weird:

the fact that a team moved
to Washington, for the most part, didnt make baseball fans. all these
hardcore fans of the Nats obviously were already baseball fans. I KNOW
they werent Expos fans, so what is strange to me is that they could up
and stop rooting for whoever their favorite team was and switch.

i
dont care if a team moved to NJ, im a Sox fan, and would never change.
Now, i would definately go see the games when they were close, im not
knocking people goin to see them. All i dont understand is how you
abondoned the teams you had. Once i have a team, i have a team for
life. I may at times root for another team, but they arent my favorite,
its situational.

You're talking about this area as if people are retards where it comes to baseball

Like
i said, its not that you can root for the team, its that people stopped
rooting for their favorite team. i just dont get how its that easy to
turn and go aight fuck this team, this is my new team

Now El Mudo, before you call me a tool and tell me to get out of
YOUR thread, how bout you actually think about things. All of you, you
think people who didnt like baseball do now just cause a team is there?
thats nuts, meaning MOST of the people already liked someone

There are people in the DC area who will always love the Orioles -
growing up, some of my favorite memories were making the trek up to
Balmer and seeing games at Memorial Stadium. I grew up in an era of
Eddie Murray, Earl Weaver and Jim Palmer - what was not to love about
that? When they won the World Series in the 1980s I was in North Carolina at boarding school,
and me and a teacher from Ohio were hooting it up, thrilled for them.

Still
- the Orioles were not a home town team, and once I got into college, I
pretty much followed what was on television, because I wasn't in the DC
market.

Around 1994 I began seeing someone who was a huge
baseball fan - a transplant, who got me to go with her to Orioles
games. I also began taking my godson to games - they were "his" team
even though he lives further south in Virginia than I do. Cal Ripken
made it exciting, as did the fact that for a few years there the team
didnt suck. Camden Yards and the inner harbor also made it fun,
and for awhile I tried to believe that the Orioles were a Washington
baseball team.

Every summer since then me and the god boy have
gone there (he's now a starting pitcher for his nationally ranked
college baseball team), and I will always, always, always love that
franchise. However, the aspestos like stench of Peter Angelos has
soured my support for the Orioles, going long before the Nats came to
town. And while I'm happy for fans (like my godson & Mikeyboy) who
are loving their current success, and from what I've seen they have a
good team on the field, I fell for the Nats from the moment it was
announced - much more than I ever thought I would. If it's Snoogin's
definition of "bandwagon" jumping, I'm comfortable with it. To me, it
just feels like things have finally been made right and I no longer
have to settle rooting for someone else's team.

About three months I was digging through a box of old childhood
shit to see if I could get rid of anything, and was stunned to come
across a Washington Senator's baseball hat that belonged to me when I
was maybe four or five years old (the same color and logo as the Nat's
hat, btw), which would have been around the time they left.

********

I
am just so proud of our guys right now! 7 games over 500 / still in 1st
place, with the Phillies in 2nd! Holy fuck!? A fun, hot summer!

Supposedly the NY Times ran a picture in the sports section on Monday of some Nats and said, "First in War...First in Peace...and First in the National League East." Wish our hometown paper had thought to do that!

If you were born on a space shuttle you should root for the Astros. Houston is the hometown of NASA. I supposed you could technically root for some Florida team since they launch from somewhere over there I think.

Or any of the Califonia teams because the shuttle lands at Edwards Air Force Base.

GodDAMMIT, man.

Good game by the Nats, taking the Cubs in a close 4-3 win.

Hernandez allows TEN FUCKING HITS and all the Cubs can muster are 3 runs...their lineup is getting absurd! Derrek Lee never has ANYONE on base when he comes up at #3, and today just drove it home (unfortunately not literally) how devastating that is since he blasted a solo HR in the 6th with nobody on...and they lost by one fucking run. If only hack Corey "K-Pat" Patterson could stop dicking around and act like the a fucking leadoff hitter! Neifi Perez is only hitting around .280 in the second spot, but that combined with his stellar defense and he's done his job: holding the SS position for the injured Nomar. He wasn't supposed to be anything more then defensive/offesnive relief this year, so he's more than come through. Patterson is the REAL mess...they need to put the consistent Todd Walker up there, or at #2, and let Patterson bat further down around #8...his defense is still too good and the Cubs' outfield backup too light to actually bench him.

It's just such a letdown when a guy like Prior pulls of a great game, only allowing 6 hits and 3 runs and 7 K's and the offense can't come through(The pen had 12 K's all night!). The Cubs have the power, and they need to utilize it.

been, thank God we had that cushion, and thank God Atlanta has lost
when they did. STILL in first place, after two month - not too
shabby. But with two months to go, a roster that just won't heal, and
the Mets & Phillies turning it up (and I can't count out the
Marlins just yet), I'm just really hoping we get a second wind and our
pitchers get the run support. That was just a crime what happened to
Patterson on Sunday, and this season.

Well, given the NL WC standings, the thing that would help the Cubs most (4 games out) would be for the Braves to sweep the Nats...push Atlanta out of the race and DC 3 games down the charts...I really appreciate how well the Nats have done this year, but they seem to be on a slide down and out at this point, so teams behind in the WC would have a better shot against them in the race as opposed to the Braves.

But hey, as long as the NL East beats up on each other, I'm happy. Four of the five teams ahead of the Cubs (Braves, Nats, Mets and Phillies) are from that division.

*sigh*

Well...we got swept...

But I'm not ready to panic just yet....for many reasons...

1) the most obvious, is that there is still two months of baseball left, and we play these douchebags nine more times I believe

2) most of these games were very close, one run games that were either decided by dumb errors we made, like Castilla's bad throw, or terrible Umpiring calls, like in the first game, where Luis Ayala clearly threw Andruw Jones a strike, and when Cristian Guzman beat out Wilson Betemit's throw...its tough enough to beat 9 guys, much less when they have two extra guys (the umpires) helping them out

I see our biggest problem is not as that tool Larry Bowa put it "they were reading about how good they were", but as we have no one in the top of our line up that can get on base consistently. Wilkie strikes out way too much, i believe he leads the NL or is tied with Adam Dunn for the lead, Cristian Guzman is...well Cristian Guzman, and Endy Chavez couldn't hack it, so he was shipped out of town. If guys like Vidro and Nick Johnson and Guillen and Castilla are coming up with nobody on, big deal if they hit a double....

Our pitching has been superb lately, Livan, Loaiza, and John F. Patterson have all been unhittable lately, but if the offence is only putting up 2 runs a game, its just a waste, and its really putting too much heat on the bull pen, I really think Gary "George Pickett" Majewski might be running on empty, and the Bulldog Joey Eischen has really been scuffling as of late too...

Make us some good deals Bowden....This team deserves not to be fodder for more "Why the Nats are Struggling" stories....

Well I finally made it out to a Nats game last night, with my Dad...

What can I say...it was awesome...Highlights:

-Our seats were awesome, Section 516, they were up high, but directly behind home plate, so we could see everything

-The heat...oh wow..the heat....when you combine the District in August with the concrete box that is Robert F. Kennedy Memorial....yikes....I baked like a Christmas Turkey

-Speaking of the heat, it also led to 4 Dodger home runs, the last of which caused me to heckle Hector Carrasco unmercifully

-Cesar Izturis made a great diving/falling catch on line drive at Short...

-Getting out of there was a pain in the ass, cause every shmo took the metro like we did, so it took us about 30 minutes just to get into the terminal

-Lot of hot chicks at the ball park, including one on the train back to West Greenbelt that was especially stunning

Overall, I had a heck of a good time, it was a fabulous game, The Nats made a furious comeback, but came up just a lil short...but i think its something ill remember for a long long time

-

This lineup really needed a spark, and someone with speed, I look forward to seeing what he can do up here...he was hitting like .370 in New Orleans..Hopefully he can become the leadoff hitter that Endy Chavez and Brad Wilkerson couldn't be

1 game back of the Asstros for ye olde wild card...with Livan going to-morrow and then Ryan Drese...Livan has been scuffling lately, I think that knee is really killing him, and I'm not sure Ryan Drese is a National League pitcher. The guy is a sinkerballer who has good stuff, but he needs a lot of run support, which he isn't going to get from this team..although he did pretty well in his last start...

Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Well...its been a hell of a run...but it looks like the season is over...The duct tape and glue couldn't hold out forever...injuries killed this team...bottom line...between Livan's bad knee, Castilla's horrible knee, Guillen's bad shoulder, ankle and hamstring, Patterson's viruses and arm problems, Luis Ayala's messed up shoulder, Ryan Church's concussions(he was never the same after destroying himself on that wall in Pittsburgh) and Nick Johnson's heel, we just couldn't keep it up...The bullpen got worn out (way way way way way too many innings from Majewski and Ayala who, thank God, are still pretty young) and eventually we were down to a rotation of Hernandez, Loaiza, Patterson and Pray for Rain..hell we even had Hector Carrasco of all people starting games down the stretch...

I think the future looks bright...Ryan Zimmerman has shown he can play big league ball, and should platoon with Vinny next year as they phase him out...Maybe Ian Desmond will have a big spring and supplant Cristian Guzman at short...I'd love to see Brandon Watson develop into the leadoff hitter we never had(which really really really killed us in the long run BTW...we had absolutely no leadoff hitter, therefore no one to get on for Vidro, Guillen, Wilkerson, Johnson etc to drive in...getting someone like Ichiro, while probably impossible, would have been a great addition)...and our bullpen is still really young...Majewski is a rookie, Cordero is in second year i believe, and Ayala is in his third..

With a new owner, and the money we gain by losing Preston Wilson and maybe some other dead weight...I think we might be able to make a run next year...and make it...

Just to bring this up....I read an interesting little discussion question in George Solomon's sunday column in the Post a few weeks back...where exactly is all the money the Nats made this year going? Would(or should?) MLB ever open up the books and tell us who is getting what? That's a pretty intruiging subject I don't know we'll ever get the answer to....

Powered by CGISpy.com .... It's been a lot of fun. I am so happy for this team - for the city. Everywhere, from "the hood," to the malls in the suburbs, you see pride for this team. Of course there should have been a better end to things, but when you do look at the injuries, and the NL East, it's amazing they held on until one week before the end of the season. I hope in the off season that they can bring in some training staff that can work on getting the guys in better condition to withstand the injuries.

knows...or maybe its time to begin the Ian Desmond experiment, since
apparently the Ryan Zimmerman experiment is already in full swing)

And we still need an Owner...DC Council vote on the stadium lease deal is Dec 20...

who...God only knows...he was reporting that Allard Baird was saying he
was "close to getting a high profile second baseman"
