I have noticed it, and while I dont have a "problem" with it, I wonder what the message is regarding it. Some of them are clearly severly handicapped, and Walmart places them right in front, so that you see them as you walk in. Most of them look uncomfortable, either from the exposure or from the wind as the doors open. What is their function, other than to demonstrate, by their presence, that Walmart hires the disabled? I do not mean to come across as insensative or anything, and I think it is great thing that a large company will employ these folks, but I wonder about the message of their placement. Have you noticed it and what do you think of it?

I haven't noticed, but I rarely shop at Wal-Mart. I'm sure there are a lot of handicapped people who are severely limited in what they can do, and there areen't a lot of skills involved in being a WalMart greeter. They're probably hiring people who couldn't be easily employed otherwise. Good for them.

They are pretty much there to say hello and greet the customers as they entered the store. in a perfect world, the stores would hire someone a bit more competent to work the exit in case there was a theft. Although most stores I have been in and serviced, there has been the handicapped working the exit as well which to me is a bit senseless cause if there was a theft I would have a hard time seeing someone who is disabled or elderly for that matter trying to tackle Mr. Shoplifter.
We used to have a few elderly folk and a couple guys who were disabled doing "security greeting" when I was running the electronics department. I always pictured the 4' 6" 70 year old tackling the big shoplifter.

Wal-Mart Greeters are all a little fucked up... (http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/01/07/walmart.employee.ap/)

Dean L. Wooten, 65, was accused of greeting customers with a computer-generated photo of himself in which he appeared to be naked -- except for a carefully placed Wal-Mart bag -- and of telling customers that Wal-Mart was cutting costs and the sack was the company's new uniform.
That wasn't a Wal-Mart bag... that was his scrotum!

I heard they're outsourcing their handicapped greeters to China.

I've seen really old greeters only, not the handicapped yet. At least in my area.
I don't know. I really don't have anything new to add to this. It's good they're doing something out in the community instead of being hid away like they're freaks. If in the end it helps them feel normal that they are just out in public and earning money like everyone else, it's a good thing.

they have an elderly gentleman at the Sam's Club in Freehold that checks your receipt out and gives your cart the once over....
i always think to myself 'there is no way he can eye everything that's on the cart' being stuff is buried
i believe he is there to provide a reason to feel 'guilty' if you are stealing something. like as if you may get the man in trouble if he doesn't catch something. i don't believe there are any scanners at the door which may catch something that wasn't paid for...

I believe that they are there just to give the customers who enter the store the impression that that they "care". I think its a fall back in case somone gets the idea to sue them on the basis of handicapped discrimination. I think it ultimatly has a positive effect on lifting the esteem of these people and its a "good thing", but I think Walmart has other motives. This one happens to be a win-win for them.

Yea, that's what we can never be sure about. Wal Mart's TRUE motive behind employing the handicapped.
I will say it's REALLY easy to think a large company is just doing something for PR reasons and doesn't care about the people they're using. But, how many other companies are employing the handicapped? I don't see them at Macys.

Taking the thread on an awful tangent
These bastards keep setting new records in evil (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6889106/)
However, I'm not sure this will be a winning argument for Wal-mart in their lawsuits "Hey, we're still better than al-Qaeda!"
