I dub this generation the Keithy generation (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6888837/)

The way many high school students see it, government censorship of newspapers may not be a bad thing, and flag burning is hardly protected free speech.

It turns out the First Amendment is a second-rate issue to many of those nearing their own adult independence, according to a study of high school attitudes released Monday.

The original amendment to the Constitution is the cornerstone of the way of life in the United States, promising citizens the freedoms of religion, speech, press and assembly.

Yet, when told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.

"These results are not only disturbing; they are dangerous," said Hodding Carter III, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which sponsored the $1 million study. "Ignorance about the basics of this free society is a danger to our nation's future."

The students are even more restrictive in their views than their elders, the study says.

When asked whether people should be allowed to express unpopular views, 97 percent of teachers and 99 percent of school principals said yes. Only 83 percent of students did.

We should ship some of these kids to countries that more reflect their views and see how much they like it.

Asking highschool kids anything about real life issues is stupid. They really do not know shit yet about the world and how it works. only a small percentage read a newspaper everyday. Most of them get their news from MTV.

Most have never worked, paid taxes, owned a car, or anything else that a real adult does.

Keithy is a perfect example. While he is a very nice boy, the pressing issues in his life are over some thick chick from another town. he is not even the slightest bit concerned about social security or other events. and I would consider him more informed than most kids simply for teh fact that he comes here and is involved in disucssions with adults.

The kids who want more censoring are in the same boat as the 15 years who want "The MAN to be stopped". They just need a cause and need to be different from their parents. As you get older, you realize your views when you were younger were insane and can never work in a practical world.

They have been trained in school to keep quiet while the teacher talks and they must learn what he says and remember it because they will be tested on it. They do not have free speach in highschool, prolly one of the reasons why they do nto really understand how it works or why it is important.

Have you noticed that in the last year, whenever there is a national survey, that a good 30% of this country is fucking nuts? This latest one just falls right in line with that.

Ugh.

I take offense to that. I think everyone has the right to speak their mind. I am against censorship and I think this world would be a lot better if more people stood for what they believed in.

That being said, I do think that some people abuse that right. But if they do, or say something disagree with, I don't have to listen.

I also watch the news and have discussions about social issues with my family.

I'm concerned with health care, stem cellr easearch, the war in iraq, the overall politics of things.

That being said, I know that I don't know as much as other people, but I am young.

Whoa...so...I met this girl the other day, and I think she likes me but I don't kno...LOLz !@$ :p

Kiethy sorry for the snap judgement, but it was more of a generalization.

being young is more what I was getting at. the things that happen do not influnce you SO directly. Since you do not drive, gas prices going up do not really effect you.

It's cool. I know what you're saying and I actually agree with you for the most part.

But I will be driving soon, so then gas prices will bother the fuck out of me and rape me of my well earned cash I'll make from my job to pay for it.

I got my license in 1999 too, and there was this crazy war going on between this Wawa and this Sunoco in my town. Both were just essentially using gas to get people into their convience stores. I think prices went as low as somewhere like 60 cents a gallon.

I went to school with two kinds of people; ones that were liberal because of Mtv, and ones that were republicans because of their parents. Neither knew what the hell they were talking about and it was impossible to have intelligent dialogues with most of them. I was always like "Jesus read a newspaper!" It was infuriating. Some knew what they were talking about though, I can't generalize. I think the retarded people just stick out in my mind more.

From Studio Briefing...

BUSH: WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?
President Bush, while calling himself a "free speech advocate," nevertheless said that the FCC must "call to account" any television program that "gets over the line" of decency. In an interview with Brian Lamb on C-SPAN Sunday, the president also said that he would ask candidates to succeed Michael Powell as head of the FCC: "Please tell me where the line is." Later, he commented, "Look, we are a great society because we're a free society. On the other hand, it is very important for there to be limits, limits to what parents have to explain to their children." Referring to bills that were introduced in the House and Senate last week that would significantly raise the fines for broadcasting indecent programs, Bush said, "Well, they're going to collect a lot of money when some of these TV shows are still on." Meanwhile, today's Los Angeles Times quoted lawmakers of both parties as predicting that fines will be raised this year. "This bill is noncontroversial, bipartisan," Massachusetts Congressman Edward J. Markey, a Democrat, told the newspaper.

You know what - in the 1970s I was allowed to watch shows like "All In the Family," and "MASH," and "Mary Tyler Moore," and even "Charlie's Angeles," and I simply accepted that there were things in this world that I would understand when I was adult - if I was curious, and couldn't noodle it through myself, i would go to my folks and they would explain it to me in a way that didn't make any of it seem dirty or shameful or taboo. They took it as an opportunity to have a discussion with their child.

These days, Janet Jackson shows a boob, and suddenly parents are frightened to explain to their youngin's that when a pop diva hits middle age she must resort to pathetic, desperate attempts to get attention. instead, they have get their knickers in a knot, and grab their torches.

it just pisses me off because then people start to censor shit so people who wanna see it cant, instead of people who dont want to see it just CHANGING THE CHANNEL

and part of it is those dickhead groups that put offensive shit up, so that people who never woulda seen the offensive shit, can see it and get offended and complain
