I get it changed every 3000 miles, but I heard you can go as much as 5000 miles. During the week I really dont use it much because i take the train to work. Suggestions?
I dont care, I just don't care, I really dont care. F U Howard Stern!!!!!

3000 miles is a myth put out there by Fram to get people to buy more oil filters.
With real light driving newer cars can get up to 12,000 miles on the same oil.
I do mine about every 5000 miles.

I think it matters a lot on what year, make and model your car is as well as the type of driving you do.
I think newer cars can go more than 3000 miles.
I have a 1996 blazer, and I try to stick to the 3000 mile rule. I have 90,000 miles on it now, and hope to get another 60,000 out of it. I have the money for a new car, but no desire to have one or make payments. So i am trying to stick it out.

do what your manual says...its the safest route. some say 3K others say 5K...it also seems to depend on how many miles your car currently has.

I don't use oil anymore.
Drain the system and fill it with the rendered fat of unbaptized infants.
Good for about 3-5K.

my manual says every 7500 miles, and i do it about every 3000 + as soon as i notice
and the manual isnt always the safest bet. im sure they tell you to do things at just the right time so that little things go wrong and you have to pay the service dept

so your saying when my manual told me to fill my engine with water, they were doing that just to screw me up. i wish this thread was around earlier.

Always follow the manual. The people who made the car know better then the people you buy the car from.
I drive NICE cars.
I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to change it more often then they recommend (after the breaking period) but NEVER let it go longer then recommended.

oh look who thinks he is better then everybody else.
dont sit here and act like car companies try their best. they could make a car that last 30 years if they wanted, but then you wouldnt have to buy more cars. they do all that shit on purpose. things are calculated to get you into the service cause not only does the dealer make money, but the car company that they have to ORDER REPLACEMENT PARTS from makes a ton of money, more than if you did the repair at your own mechanic

It depends on weather, driving conditions, how often, how long, but 5000 to 6000 miles is a good yardstick.
Back in the day, I had a Buick Park Avenue that went about 10k w/o an oil change, and it was running fine.
I change mine about 5K on my truck.

i try to keep it to 3k. I sometimes let it go to 4k, simply because i can't schedule an oil change.
do you guys go to the dealer or the 5 minute jobbies?

almost always myself ...
but if it's due and i have to bring it to the mechanic for some repair then i'll let him knock it out
a little pain getting the oil down to the recycling center but it gives me that warm and fuzzy deeling to know that the nut and filter are on tight and there is oil in the engine

I have a lease and it's been about 15,000 so far. I'm going to change it soon, though, just to make sure it makes it until Sept. when I turn it in.

I had a 1992 Toyota Camry that I used synthetic oil in and I changed it every 3000 miles like clockwork and it lasted me well over 300,000 miles and was still going strong when I sold it. I am also a fan of Tuf-Oil and additives. At 300,000 miles, when I would have it inspected, the guy was always floored at how little emmisons it had.

Do it yourself. Much cheaper and it's not very hard.
About the original question, it also depends on what kind of driving you are doing. If you are like me and go 500 miles a week but are only on highways you will be able to last longer then a guy who goes half that distance but is in constant stop and go traffic.
