My Bloody Belly Button

First off, I know none of you are doctors and I have sense enough to take whats said with a grain of salt.
Second, Im not into going to the doctors and generally will only go to as a last resort. Usually what I do is ask others if they had something similar and I take it from there, how they got relief or whatever. I try to self medicate.

Now, it started like 4 days ago. I was getting ready for bed and absently put my finger into my belly button to see if I had any lint or whatever in there and I felt what felt like a slickness in there and I didnt think anything of it, just figured it was damp or whatever from sweat.
The next day it was the same, no pain or anything.

Today I feel in it again and I feel the same and also a scab, and I try to get a look in there and its all red and I realise it might be a bit of blood. I have no pain or anything but when I see it it kind of scares me and I try searching for "belly button infection" and "belly button irritation" and variants of "navel", but only find millions of links to people who have problems after having their belly buttons pierced, and I cant really find anything other than the usual-- "go see a doctor" bullshit. I showered and applied some neosporin just in case.

I have been taking baths lately and relaxing in the tub and (I know it sounds gay) having a bubble bath after a long day of work. Ive been using body wash as a sudsing agent in the tub and Im wondering if the time Im in the water has anything to do with it.

Anyone ever have this? Any suggestions?

can't really help ya...

one time when i was a young teen i for some reason looked into my belly button and i saw this round black thing. i tried getting it out with my finger but it wouldn't budge

i remember going to my dad and asking him to take a look and maybe tell me what it was. it turned ou tbeing a nice sized tick. i got the tweezers and it took some pretty good pulling to get it out. it had little pieces of skin stuck to each of it's feet.

i eventually was able to squeeze it and some blackish purple blood came out of it

Update:

I have been applying Neosporin sice I posted this and it seems to be getting better on its own. I poured a bit of Betadine in one night but the ointment seems to be doing the trick. Interestingly, women who I tell this too are always flabbergasted that "men never go to the doctor", and while I do have great coverage, I just find the whole doctor's office experience to be counterproductive and rarely if ever get any kind of satisfactory care.

I always had that fear of picking at my belly button a bit too much and having the thing open thus disemboweling myself.

Strange.

Maybe it is an ingrown hair. I had one of those on my stomach once and so i picked at it and picked at it and it got to the point where I could shoot some stuff out of it and there would be a drip on the floor. Of course, I thought this was kind of neat.

It wasn't so neat after it became infected and it turns out it was a non-cancerous cyst that was pulled out of me.

Looked like a marble.

Scary stuff.

Never again have I picked at myself.

Ingrown hairs are the worst. It seems there just no way to avoid one or two. You're going along great and suddenly you have this thing you have to get out of your skin. So now you have a bump, bleeding and a possible infection.

Another update: The antibiotic ointment was working only slightly, so I went to the pharmacy and described the problem to the (Hot!) Indian babe pharmacist and she suggested I use hydrocortizone cream and I remembered my Dr had given me a stronger than off the shelf hydrocortizone cream (like 2.5%) and I used it yesterday and today and man! What a difference already! The redness has gone down considerably and Im pretty sure Im going to cure myself.
