Well this douchebag has been making news about his essay calling the victims of the 9/11 Nazis and blaming the attacks on US foreign policy. I know he is protected by the 1st ammendment but what he fails to realize that freedom requires RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY

No Apologies from Ward Churchill (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=7&u=/ap/20050206/ap_on_re_us/speaker_protest)

I really don't think he has to apologize for anything he said. While I find what he said disgusting and I disagree, he is certainly within his rights to say it. This is what free speech is all about, for better or worse.

Not only an America hating asshole, but dead wrong as well
"It was just worth it to them in order to do whatever it was they decided it was necessary to do that bystanders be killed. And that essentially is the same mentality, the same rubric."
If that was the case, they could have did this at 2 AM and MINIMIZED civilan casualties, like the military tries its best to do. But they planned it for 9 AM, when the building would be full. Completely different mentality.
It's not completely reasoned and thought through
Understatement of the year

he was asked about the effectiveness of protests of U.S. policies and the Iraq (news - web sites) war, and responded: "One of the things I've suggested is that it may be that more 9/11s are necessary."
Maybe they'll target Colleges next, and hopefully they'll only be ONE casualty.

More importantly, this is the best case I've seen of Fox News going out of its way to actually make the news. O'Reilly "broke" this, and now the entire channel has been running with it for about a week now.

I turned on Fox News 7 or 8 times yesterday, and with only ONE exception, this was the story that was being pounded into the ground, no matter which show was on.

Why?

Why should we care about this?

Present it as a news story. Boom, you're done. This kind of extended witchhunt, apparently during which NO other news happens around the world, which makes Fox look so goddamn pathetic.

They're a legitimate global news organization who've demonstrated excellent abilities to report news...why waste their time and resources for a week on this? And now it's spread to to the OTHER news outlets, who initially just reported it, maybe had a couple editorials, and moved the fuck on.

There's ALWAYS going to be douchebags like this out there. Why should this guy rate? Fuck him and his asshole of an essay. He's a nobody.

He doesn't have to apologize. People aren't forced to take his class. If they don't want to because of this, hey, decision made.

WHY ARE WE EVEN TALKING ABOUT THIS DICKHEAD?!?

To what?

Terrorists blowing up schools?

And I hate to break it to you, but teachers are people and people have opinions. We gotta create some kind of thought police before schools hire people now? Or we start firing people because of their political beliefs?

How he makes his money is why he can't be fired. He's a federal employee. The government stepping in and doing anything isn't just some metaphorical abuse of the 1st ammendment...it's a DIRECT VIOLATION OF THE VERY REASON THE 1ST AMMENDMENT EXISTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. This is exactly why, almost verbatim, why that ammendment exists.

Free speech exists to protect the speech you hate, not the speech you love. Them's the breaks if you want a free republic.

People can disagree with him. People can call him whatever they want. People can choose to picket his house or his place of work. People can choose to not take his class or attend his lectures. THAT'S the accountability here.

Where did I make it about the Right or the Left?

I brought up how the amount of coverage of this story reflect on Fox News and the quality of their journalism, and generally why we should be giving two shits about this schmuck, and why he rates nearly a week of almost around-the-clock coverage by a global news network.

Where's the partisan politics? Please, point it out for me.

This kind of extended witchhunt

Its not a witch hunt when you're being hung by your own accurately presented statements.

BTW Fox News jumping all over this, does this surprise you? Not me. Their audience eats this shit up, and they're giving them what they want. That's the biz.

Um...Yes, he has no reason to apologize because the constitution allows him to speak his mind. Thank God for that right. In good taste, and out of respect to the victims families, he should apologize. I wouldn't mind sending some of the NYFD over to this guys house to have a little "chat".

In good taste, and out of respect to the victims families, he should apologize.

And there's the right answer.

If he's a decent human being, he will. If not, well, odds are he'll be treated like a scumbag (rightfully) by a good number of people for the rest of his life. It's his choice.

Right. He's protected in terms of his job...and obviously, it's not legal for someone to jump the guy. But his life is forever changed by this, probably for the worse. But, it was his choice, and he must have forseen that. If not, well, he's even dumber than he already sounds.

If anyone cares to form an opinion based on his actual essay and subsequent explanation (http://www.politicalgateway.com/news/read.html?id=2739)

The piece circulating on the internet was developed into a book, On the Justice of Roosting Chickens. Most of the book is a detailed chronology of U.S. military interventions since 1776 and U.S. violations of international law since World War II. My point is that we cannot allow the U.S. government, acting in our name, to engage in massive violations of international law and fundamental human rights and not expect to reap the consequences.

The orginal essay was written almost stream of consciousness and was a gut reaction to the horrific events of that day.

I may not agree with his imagery, but I agree with the sentiment. The United States was not an innocent victim of 9-11, only the victims were.

I may not agree with his imagery, but I agree with the sentiment.

You shouldn't, the sentiment is entirely wrong.

Our nations policies in the mid-east and elsewhere have doubtless left blood on our hands, no matter how they were intended. What transpired on 9/11, however, was entirely of another realm.

It was driven not by desire avenge the suffering caused by sanctions in Iraq or the oppression of the Palestinian people, but rather by religious fanaticism and a desire to place the capital of the civilized world under the thumb, at least momentarily, of a brutal theocracy. It is the same thinking that inspired a fatwah against Salman Rushdie; the public beatings, burnings, and executions of women in Afghanistan; the murder of tourists in Egypt; the bombings of public buildings in a Saudi Arabia deemed too secular and modern for the tastes of wahhabi extremists, not to mention numberless other atrocities which I can't call to mind as I write this. It was anti-democratic, anti-secular, anti-modern, and anti-infidel far more than it was anti-US policy.
This is a violent, savage cult of theocratic fascists and nothing more noble than that. Your agreement with the sentiments expressed in this idiot's article is masochistic and wrongheaded, I'm sorry.

silera

I'll respectfully disagree with you back. Religious fanatacism aside, US foreign policy is the best recruiting tool for Al Queada.

Completely ignoring our nation's role in creating terrorists, and feigning innocent victim makes it easier for us to continue to make the same mistakes.

Equating my desire for the US as a nation to look inwardly for change does not AT ALL imply that the actions of terrorists are noble. I just don't buy the argument that "they hate us for our freedom." It's the equivalent of my telling my kids that babies only come after marriage. It's somewhat based in truth but much more complicated than that.

There's a Dominican saying, "Just because you can blot out the sun with your thumb, doesn't mean it's not there anymore." Sadly, since 9-11, politicians, the media, and Americans in general, have been blotting out the sun with their thumbs and trying to convince the rest of us that it's no longer there.
