The Gates (http://www.the-gates-at-central-park.com/)
This seems like a really cool idea to me. Being a student of photography and the arts I'm excited to see. Seems like a great photo opertunity.

I think they unfurl the saffron cloth today.

Everyone keeps asking, "What does it mean?" I love the artist's response, "It's just a piece of art."

Should be cool. 23 miles.

Looked like they were just about done the other day, will probably be ready this weekend. It looks real nice, especially to walk through. I dont know why this is called an "Art" display, though. Art should mean something, and even the creators said they weren't trying to say anything. I'd prefer the word "Design".

I saw it on the news this morning but it didn't look complete. I'm gonna go check it out next weekend.

So what are they going to do with it after it's done? Throw the materials away?

What is it supposed to symbolize??

They suck!!!

central park is the one place in nyc where you can be with trees,
grass and birds. i go running there to get away from clutter.
Furthermore, running by the Gates makes you noxious- orange
(sorry saffron) bars flying by...

this isn't a comment on its artistic value. i just don't want it in
the place designed to be a brake from the city.

-I'll log off now, and listen to your
response.-

Art is such an open ended concept. Literally anything can be art.

If this means something to someone that's great, but if the "artist" can't think of anyting more than "It's just a piece of art." then maybe this isn't art. Unless he's doing the "Matrix" thing of not wanting to explain it himself and let others make what they will of it.

Is this costing the people of New York anything?

yahoo ran a headline that said thoudands will flock to NYC to see the piece ... considereing the milions that visit anyway, it doesn't sound that impressive ...

i'll definitely go on my lunch break, and take my cameras for some midday fun ...

From what I've read and heard, the whole thing is about $21 million.

Christo?
Hasn't he killed before with his art?

Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!

More like $35 Million and all paid for by Christo. It is costing NYers because there will be cops there 24 hours a day for about two weeks. The materials will be recycled after they are done showing this.

I saw a piece on the news about this and thought it was pretty cool, but my mother thought it was like the coolest thing ever, and I was like, ok, it's not that big a deal. They do have some other cool experiments that are similar to this like in China as well.

I checked it out yesterday, I thought it was interesting. Is is art? possibly, but then again teenagers have been T-P trees for years is that art?

The crowds were very impressive though, But if a good ball game was on yesterday I would have passed.
