Patient was in gay male with multiple unprotected sex partners and a meth habit.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. If you get AIDS through sex in this day and age, you really deserve no sympathy. Condom. Boom. You're done.

We were ALL lulled into a false sense of security.
Like ALL of us practice safe sex? Please. Lets call a spade a spade.
I also know we're not all meth fiends.

What false sense of security? It's always been out there.
I'm not saying that people who don't practice safe sex deserve to get AIDS, but if you DO get it from unsafe sex, it shouldn't be some shock.
Out of all the terminal diseases in the United States, HIV/AIDS has the highest rate where you have the MOST CONTROL whether you contract it or not.
In other words, if you get it through sex/drugs, it's your own damn fault.
Let me know when SuperAIDS can get through a condom or becomes airborne. Then I'll be scared.

Those of us "safe" from it can be on high horse.
Like I said, we were lulled into a false sense of security.
He didn't pass the virus on purpose.
We ALL need to be safe. As we should have from the getgo.
Just watch out for tranny terry.

yeah, I'm not getting the "false sense of security" either.
another new strian could come out next week that kills you in a week, i'd feel as safe as i do now and last week.
We've all lived with this for the majority of our lives. I get as worked up over AIDS alerts as I do over car alarms.

Well, in the last few years, the general sense was that AIDS had been "handled" thanks to the medical treatments developed in the late 90's, like the "drug cocktail."

maybe people thought we figured out better ways to 'handle' AIDS once you got it...but i'm pretty sure no one thought it had disappeared and we can no longer get it. to me a new strain is just like the old one, and i have to take the same measures in order to avoid it. old or new strain, it still sucks.

Exactly. I can't count how many times I've read or heard that with the cocktails of protease inhibitors currently in use, the disease had moved from the 100 percent deadly scourge of the late '80s to a "chronic, but manageable" condition.
It doesn't shock or offend me that people in high risk groups, like the gay community here in NY, permitted themselves a bit more sexual license after living through the devastation of the past 20 yrs. I just hope this outbreak is as minor as possible and serves as a warning about how ephemeral the efficacy of these treatments can be .

Aids can be passed through oral sex as well, so even if you practice "safe sex" with a condom on, do not forget about the oral aspect. I think that is the often overlooked part.
This new strain is very scary, but at the same time they have predicted something like happening. It can happen with any virus, from AIDS to the flu.

Overall, it just demonstrates how diseases continue to mutate and change.
It may still only be primarliy gotten through "high risk" activities NOW...but who's to say it won't become something even worse down the line? This change just happened within 20-30 years. How long until the next one?

And you can get HIV from oral?
it's very possible ... but. it's not as high a risk as other activities ...
has the virus mutated progressively through the years, or has this strain exponentially jumped ...?

Who is at risk?
Anyone who has unprotected sex, especially unprotected anal sex, which increases the odds of transmitting all types of sexually transmitted diseases.
Mayor Bloomberg says: Attention all fags, this is way gay marriage is not such a good idea.

Even if this stays in the Gay community, I hope were not all being dismissive. Gay people dont deserve to die because they were born gay. I think we'd all be upset if this guy was someone we know and like, like Fez or Mojo. ;)
I'm just glad they found this guy and his partners. Hopefully they nipped it in the bud.
I have heard similar stories over the years, of HIV2 and drug resistant Tuberculosis. Yet they seem to be able to get a grip on it. Lets hope so.

That is like hoping to empty a lake with a spoon. The true hope is to educate people on how to protect themselves and prevent the further spread of AIDS. The sense of security came from the fact that AIDS/HIV new cases were on the decline in the US in the last ten years, so people began to relax their guard. This is a lesson that we all must remember to be prepared to fight the fire of ignorance and defeat it with education.

Here we go, folks...
If you're in a mongoamous rtelationship, get tested, and you're okj.
if you like fucking a lot of different peoplke, where a condom.
AND YOU'RE FINE.
I still remember when I was in college and the looks on all those fucking whores faces when I had my Logic/Persuasion presentation on "AIDS is not a disease of sympathy".
The whole classroom hated me, it was great.
The professor - who was gay, btw - gave me an A for having an "excellent presentation with an unpopular - BUT CORRECT - stance."

As much as it pains me to, I have to agree with Tenbats and others in this thread who shared his main point. AIDS/HIV can be controlled. The occasional Arhtur Ash kind of accidental tragedy happens, but for the most part it seems that the people who get this disease are engaging in risky behavior.
Fuzzybutt's point that we have been lulled into a false sense of security is a good one on the other side of that. It's almost as if we had a cure, with what you hear about. People getting these drugs and having so little of the disease in their blood, the tests look as thought they don't have AIDS anymore. HIV doesn't develop into AIDS for a decade or more.
It's a serious problem that everyone should be concerned about.
