Petco Horror Stories (http://www.petcocruelty.com/index.asp)

I found the site above on my usual visit to the PETA site to check out the latest updates in the fight against animal cruelty.

I used to be a regular Petco customer, mostly to go with my fiance to see the strays for adoption, but as an avid saltwater aquarist I would usually take a moment or two to check out thier saltwater fish section.

Petco has no fucking clue how to operate a saltwater fish store. Saltwater fish are absolutely the most difficult pet to have, IMHO, and you really need to know what the fuck you're doing if you intend to actually keep the animals alive. It's not just maintaining certain water and temperature conditions for the fish (which is a big part of it). You really need an understaind of animal husbandry and basic marine biology to care for the animals effectively. You also need some basic common sense...like don't put lionfish & triggerfish (both meat eating and particularly vicious) in the same tank with non-predatory, herbivorous tank mates. Don't overcrowd a tank. Remove dead fish as quickly as possible to avoid ammonia contamination from thier decomposing flesh. Meet thier nutritional requirements...don't just throw flake food in and expect them to turn out ok.

Petco of Freehold ignored ALL of these basic principles to marine fish care. What I saw there was nothing short of a nightmare...death, dismemberment, disease...I couldn't even bear to look...

Yes, they might mean nothing to most of you out there who think they're just fish...but when you consider that most fish caught in the wild are stunned with cyanide and forced to endure a 5000 plane ride to your local pet store only to be subjected to further harm by some seventeen year old Petco Employee with no idea what he's doing you might have just a little sympathy.

If you have similiar horror stores with Petco or your local pet store, post them here and on thier site.

yeah the one on rt 9 by old country buffet...

i heard they dont even sell the saltwater anymore b/c they sucked so badly at it...lost a lot of money on stock...

thats the thing also, these fish are not cheap either. You can easily drop 20-100 on one fish depending on its size, popularity and availability. (Sometimes more, at professional fish shops..I've seen them go for thousands of dollars) I actually bought a lawnmower blenny from them...died days later. Store wouldn't take it back..."bad water", they claim...I said prove it...at which point they pointed out the alkalinity of my water based on a ph test result from a 5 dollar kit they had by the register....

"It's way too high..."

"Umm...yeah, that's because its saltwater, it's supposed to be that high..."

fucking idiot.

got my money back though.

There used to be a movie theater where that Petco is, and when I was a wee young lad my mommy brought me to see Masters of the Universe, and gullible little youngster that I was, I loved the thing.

That was the last time I was in that building. But I often go to the Circuit City near there.

That's all.

Do NOT get your pet groomed at ANY Petco!!!
Petco will abuse, and hurt your pet. Their haircuts are done by KIDS making $6.00 an hour with NO schooling!!!

Go to the Goochie Pooch on Route 18 in East Brunswick!!! They are fully licensed and even have pesticide licenses for the flea dips. Ears, nails, & anal glands are cleaned too unlike those animal abusers at Petco!!! Any shop is better than Petco!!!

I know nada about the fishies, but anyone who knows me knows that I am a friend to the felines.
My mom and I have even rescued a few litters of abandoned kittens and hand raised them, got them vaccinated and gave them to good homes.

My mom recently learned that even though PetSmart houses cats and kittens for adoption through a nonprofit organization, it does not donate ANYTHING to the care and feeding of these animals. In many of the stores, the conditions are borderline deplorable...in my opinion at least. It's a sad fact, but when presented in such unkempt conditions, people are less likely to adopt them.

I will not boycott, and wouldn't expect anyone else to. BUT when I go to do my own shopping I set aside a certain amount of money to buy food and litter to donate to the adoption group. They are constantly in need of towels, litter, and dry food.

If anyone feels charitable.... why not donate? If anything, it will put a smile on your face and the volunteers will be EVER grateful.

:-) sorry for the long winded-ness....lol

From my experience I have found that local mom and pop pet stores to be much better places to go to get your fishies and other animals at. Petco is fine if you want to get some crickets or pet food, but buying actual pets there I don't think I would consider it. I've been to many many stores with Amy getting supplies and looking at the various animals from Petco, to Pet Smart, Petland, etc and I do agree that Petco does seem to neglect the fishes in the store. I find that local small pet stores are so much better at caring for the pets the sell and also for giving sound advice with regards to pet care for anyone considering buying a pet. Whereas Petco workers I've seen for the most part don't really seem to know much about what they're selling.

I hate PETA with a passion, but ActivistCash is part of the Center for Consumer Freedom which is headed by Attorney Rick Berman who represents alcohol, tobacco, and several restaraunt industries.

They hate PETA not because they give a damn about consumers, but because they exist to protect their own interests.

i adopted my dog at Petco (or petsmart or one of those joints)
They give space to the local animal rescue leagues on Saturdays.
This organization was "Friends of Animals". They got my KC from the Paterson pound 1 day before the injection.
That was 8 years ago. Not a bad investment on the $75.00 donation. Plus they threw in a state funded certificate for a $20 neutering. (required when you rescue a pound puppy)
So for $95 I got a best friend, saved a life, got almost $1,00 worth in vet care and and shots, and got a tax write-off.

Thanks Petco. FU PETA!!

I would put up a pic of my puppy, but I am temporarily without hosting.

I love Petco. Selection is great, all sorts of special needs foods/equiptment/toys. Stuff I'd never get at my local pet store. Stores are clean, never noticed any bad conditions for the pets for sale. Seen much worse at some local stores, lets not even mention what the City Shelters are like. Which are an absolute nightmare. I was surprised that that's all PETA could come up with, given the size of the company and the # of locations. The glass is only 98% full, and thats not good enough for some folks. .

Petco also sponsors Grayhound rescue. They Save the too-slow racing dogs. Probably my next dog.
My neighbor rescued 2 of them, and he said they are well behaved, love kids, and have little desire to run crazy. (They did their running at Hialeya!)

There is also Golden, Pit, and Bulldog rescue at our nearest petco. (Paramus)

Petco carries all the shit food, at least for cats. They don't carry Wellness or Innova. I can only get my cats Wellness at the local pet shop. The food they carry is basically like feeding cats McDonalds every day. Even Iams and Science Diet are crap, and has animal byproduct in their formulas.

And yes, the pet adoptions on Saturday are organized by the local rescues, Petco just gives them the space. I used to go every weekend and almost come home with a new kitty.

Wellness/Innova and the more expensive pet foods cost more, but it ends up costing the same as if you fed your cat 9 lives or whiskas. Since the nutritional content in the cheaper foods is lower, the cat needs to eat more - with Wellness my pig cats eat half as much

From About.com:

Cheaper Brands are False Economy

Many first-time cat owners, in an attempt to hold down expenses, buy the cheapest foods they can find for their cats. This is false economy for a couple of reasons. First, studies have shown that cats eat as much as they need to get the nutrients they require. Therefore, they might eat twice as much of that generously-carbohydrate-filled store brand to get the nutrients they need in a normal feeding of premium food. Second, the continued feeding of substandard foods over a period of years will heavily contribute to, or even cause, serious medical conditions that will require expensive veterinary care.

This is a rediculous statement. We all know that religous fanatics, from as far back in history we can go, do stupid things in the name of their god/gods. Killing other people even though "we are all god's children".

As far as animal activists.. have you ever heard of a group (peta or whomever) slaughtering herds of lamb to prove any sort of point. Talk to any one of those extremists, they are almost all pasifists. Alot of them make their clothes at natural masterials, hemp for example, to make sure there was no animal parts used in their clothing or shoes. (I tried that once, but then I saw these kick ass Doc Martins..)

So as far as that petco, point your fingers somewhere else. Activists would rather die than harm an animal.

I found the site above on my usual visit to the PETA site to check out the latest updates in the fight against animal cruelty.

Apparently you missed the Penn and Teller show where they exposed the fact that peta euthanises dogs, or the fact that the senior VP of Peta is a diabtic who injects insulin from slaughtered pigs.
Or maybe you missed the fact that peta is against animal ownership. So, your keeping salt water fish is an enslavement of animals that yearn to be free.
Peta is a money machine. Their executives live the high life while they have volunteers slave away at the supposed task of animal liberation. Hell their so bad I bet their republicans.

I read somewhere that they will euthanise animals if they are suffering and have absolutely no chance to live..

what happened to just throwing red paint on people wearing furs?? Those were the days.
