Scientists find signs of life currently on Mars. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6981361/)

WASHINGTON - A pair of NASA scientists told a group of space officials at a private meeting here that they have found strong evidence that life may exist today on Mars, hidden away in caves and sustained by pockets of water.

The scientists, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke of NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, told the group that they have submitted their findings to the journal Nature for publication in May, and their paper currently is being peer reviewed.

You'd think this would be big news, but apparently not. I almost missed it on MSNBC.com front page.

Yea, but we're talking micro organisms, not cool almond eyed dudes or ones with brushed on their helmets named Marvin.

Until then, keep these kinds of updates to the D&D circle.

Maybe its not big news because they've suspected it for years. Scientists think that conditions for life were actually better on Mars than Earth about a billion years ago, and they think Mars may have "seeded" life on Earth through a meteorite. They also think life is very hard to kill off completely. Some NASA scientists even think we can settle Mars and eventually make the atmosphere liveable (I'd be happy to go to the Moon, once).

I think its big news. I love this stuff.

One thing though. There may be life all over the universe, but getting from here to there is a big problem. The nearest star is 4 light years away. So if you could travel at light speed (which we cant, not even close) it would take 4 years to get there. To send messages back and forth, 4 years each way. And that's the NEAREST star, Alpha Centuri.

Thats because it's a no story.

Signs of life != life.

Just like when they thought they found some a bunch of years ago but it ended up being nothing.

If there were intelligent life on other planets, I think we'd know by now, and those aliens are probably saying the same thing on their planet.

The President committed the United States to a long-term human and robotic program to explore the solar system, starting with a return to the Moon that will ultimately enable future exploration of Mars and other destinations. (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/01/20040114-1.html)

Laying the groundwork, baby, laying the groundwork.

If it's not in the Bible, then I don't believe it.

While I hate to step on AJ's funny, I'm going to anyway. If this story is true, it should mark a turning point in human history similar to Copernicus' popularizing the fact that the Earth is not the center of the universe. If life is "common" in the universe, it should take the starch out of the fundamentalist religious movements that interpret their sacred texts literally (Christian, Islamic and Jewish). Which is a good thing, if you're wondering.

Hey! God really does work in mysterious ways. :)

If the Universe is ever expanding and infinite, wouldn't the odds of life as we know it be reallly high?

To tie in another thread:

From the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

THE UNIVERSE:
4. Population

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Why therefore?

Infinity would seem to include everything.

I love that kinda stuff.

In the one college psychology class I took, they taught us about a guy, I think his name was Zeno or some shit.

His theory was that to go from point A to point B, you 1st have to go half the distance. If you keep going half the distance to a point, you never actually reach it. You just end up going a smaller and smaller distance. Therefore, motion is an illusion.

Freaky shit.

(Sorry if someone actually knows the REAL explination of that and I butchered it. I don't have time for a web search now. Got shit to do bitches!)

There are different levels of infinity, which is to say, some infinities are bigger than others.

Having said that, I think the math in the quote is kind of sketchy, but I'm not sure and it's supposed to be a joke anyway.

Mike the Teacher would probably be able to give a better answer.

Infinity makes my head hurt.

The original story is not a "hoax". What NASA is saying is that you cannot draw a conclusion that there is life on Mars (as many media outlets did)from the evidence presented in the study that there is more methane in the atmosphere of Mars than expected. There are other explanations for the methane besides Martians farting; however you can't rule it out yet.

Based on the discussion from last night's show, despite Ron's misgivings, I say we do send somebody up to Mars to poke things with a stick. However, instead of Fez, I nominate my friend, the esteemed Lord Jezo. ;)
