I'm basically a cynical person-especially when it comes to public officials. Being a civil servant myself, I get to see first hand much of the hypocrisy inherent in city government.
With that said, I can honestly say that I probably have now have the closest thing that I can call a hero in the person of Rudy Guilini.
The manner in which he handled the WTC catastrophy was unequaled in the history of NYC. He instinctively knew what to do, when to do it and most importantly, he surrounded himself with people who knew their areas of expertise inside and out.
He is an example of what a New Yorker should be. He did not worry about opinion polls and private interest lobbies. What he cares about the most is the average citizen and worker in this great city of ours.
He will always have my undying gratitude in his leadership of the city in it's most horrific ordeal.
Thank you.

Nice post, Reeshy. I sent an e-mail to the NY Post editorial page a few days ago saying many of the same things.

Somehow, when he came on the TV in the days following the attack, I had the feeling that everything was going to be all right. He has a certain air about him that makes you feel confident of those in charge.

I know many people (including the NYPD) have had their differences with him in the past, but to give him anything less than stellar reviews on his handling of the attack would be less than honest.

Thanks again, WWFallon. You are an American hero.

True Gvac,
The first night of the disaster, we were getting orders down near Varick St. Who comes walking down?-Rudy! He gave us a few words of encouragement but they sure went a long way. He gave me the same feeling that things were going to be alright eventually but that it would be a long hard road.
I'm just glad he's on our side.

I think Guiliani is the best mayor ever for New York.Even though I don't live inNew York I think he's awesome.Screw Bloomberg and Green and Ferrer(sp)Guiliani rules and should be mayor until his untimely passing.......

Agree with all sentiments and want to add one observation.

When Guiliani appeared on TV in the days after the terrorist attack, he seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. He acknowledged the pain and suffering of individuals and the city and this was vital for people to see.

Simultaneously, he projected an air of strong leadership and an aura that things will eventually be OK.

Both qualities, the vulnerability and the assuredness is what makes him so remarkable.
