My dad was a Marine stationed in the south Pacific during WWII. The stories he'd tell would mesmerize me for hours. I am quite proud of him.

I was a "change of life" baby.

Heaven forbid someone reminises 60 yrs from now about something as bad or worse that happens in our timeframe.
Seeing that front page somehow transported me back to that time and I was kinda blown away by instant perspective all of the sudden.
Weird.

I believe Patton actually got busted for three seperate "slapping" events. SLAP-HAPPY PAPPY!

Man, look at that front page of the NYT. There was apparently a lot more news in those days, even with it being wartime.

My Granfather's brother Arthur served in the 1st Infantry under Patton in North Africa and later in France. One of the famous battles was El Guettar. Patton would later pin the Silver Star on Arthur and he also received 2 purple hearts. He's still alive and living in Florida.

He wound up working and retiring from Colgate in Jersey City after the war.

My Grandfather's other brother Everrett was killed in a tank at the Battle Of The Bulge. My Grandfather saw a documentary of the battle and got upset because we let our guard down at the beginning of that battle. The high ranking officers were celebrating the holidays as a good number of the men were getting ripped to shreads.

It's a little coincidental but Patton is buried very close to Everrett in the Luxembourg Cemetary

Sorry to bring up an old post, but when I found this thread I thought I'd share this pic. I took it in 1998 with an old Pentax K-1000. I'm no pro, but my WW II veteran Uncle Van likes the pic, so that's all that matters to me!

I went back to the same spot in 2002 to try and do a better one, but I failed. I must say though... If you're in DC on July 4th, it's a wonderful place to see the fireworks. It can make the most jaded American feel proud of his country.

When I hear the detailed accounts of Iwo Jima, nothing makes me more proud of being a United States Marine. Those guys don't get nearly enough credit.

Thank you Alice and Mojo!!! I don't sell the photo, though I've given many copies away (mostly to veterans). Though it could probably sell, a whole lot of other photographers have similar shots. There's always several there at the same spot every year. If anyone wants a higher res copy of it, I'd be happy to email it to you.

Thank you all so much for your kind compliments! If anyone is planning to go to DC on July 4th, I can tell you exactly where to go to get a shot like this (and how to set up the camera). There's actually a spot about 20 feet to the right of where I was, that will also get the Capitol Building and the Jefferson memorial (or is it the Lincoln?) in the same shot. The year I took this shot, there were some idiots already in that spot, and none of them had a camera.

I don't want to kill anyone.-Bitz

Thanks Monsterone for the sig!
