Author of "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas", viewed as the voice of a generation, reportedly dead by suicide.

Not really shocking, considering the history of extreme drug use.

Seeyuh, Uncle Duke.

Now that man LIVED a life.

The obvious books aside, his writings on American politics, especially the '72 election, are spectacular.

He may have been 67 , but that was still too young to go.

"San Francisco in the middle '60s was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run ...but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that comer of time and the world. Whatever it meant."

"And that, I think, was the handle--that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting--on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark--the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." --Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

What about the drugs,He did em.He did em all. The drugs, the guns, the paranoia, he at least owned his shit. Smarter? Pissed off, yes. I used to regularly read his Rolling Stone atricles. He used to amaze me that he could write three pages and not have a point, or much in the way of facts. Style over substance. He was a talented novelist to be sure, but his Political commentary wasn't worth shit. And his predictions in his columns were consistently wrong.

Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore -- on the field, on live TV -- right after the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. In fact, they were shown in a closeup within 60 seconds of the final out. And every Red Sox fan is determined to pretend that this never happened, and that it didn't taint the moment even a little bit ... so it wasn't a huge deal.

Not really shocking, considering the history of extreme drug use.

Sick of this attitude. First of all, he has said himself that a lot of his "drug use" was made up. But unless you've actually read all of his stuff, you wouldn't know that. Two, there is nothing fitting about this. He was the last voice that could've spoken honestly and unafraid about everything that's going down while we are ruled by the neo-con death cult. Considering how this man ate life with both hands, this whole thing is actually quite bizarre. not fitting.

"Extract of pineal."
He stared at me. "Sure," he said. "That's a good idea. One whiff of that shit would turn you into something out of a goddamn medical encyclopedia! Man, your head would swell up like a watermelon, you'd probably gain about a hundred pounds in two hours . . . claws, bleeding warts, then you'd notice six huge hairy tits swelling up on your back . . . " He shook his head emphatically. "Man, I'll try just about anything: but I'd never in hell touch a pineal gland."

He's been in tons of pain lately, even more than his endless supply of booze and pks could withstand, even keeping him wheelchair bound for much of the last week.

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. " - - - - Raoul Duke

He had been in a lot of pain these last few years, as some have said. Several hip surgeries, and even one on his spine. He had trouble walking without a cane, and really going distances, and supposedly that really weighed on him and made him miserable.

Here's a revealing old quote from the man himself...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/rikardos/independenthunter.jpg

Warren Ellis is a writer who did a now-finished comic series called "Transmetropolitan" where the main character was clearly based on Hunter, and he wrote an interesting op-ed piece on Thompson's suicide. (http://www.warrenellis.com/index.php?p=375)

I read an article a few years ago, that I haven't seen cited in the obituaries yet, wherein it's stated that Thompson's body was pretty much packing up on him. His stomach was having problems with toxic substances like, um, food, and his diet was mostly liquid, mashed avocado and yoghurt. He'd spent time in a wheelchair in recent years. His drug use had always been exaggerated for comedic effect, but, at 67, he'd been hammering his body in a committed way for some 50 years. And, at 67, you don't grow back the bits you killed. There's a fair chance he was looking at years of dependency, chronic illness, and listening to his own body die by inches. Anyone would find that frightening.

Hunter Thompson waited until his young wife left the house, and then shot himself in the head with a pistol. He must have been quite aware that either she, or his son, there in the house with his grandson, would find his corpse. Dead bodies don't lay neatly. They splay, spastic and awful. There is often shit.

Here's some sick shit I just read. (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/state/article/0,1299,DRMN_21_3575306,00.html)

The guy shot himself in the face! There's no way this was peaceful and beautiful... There must have been skull fragments on the wall, as he sat in his chair with half-a-face and blood pouring from his head. It's impossible that this was a nice little gathering, as his 32-year old derranged wife tried to describe it.

Also, note that Hunter Thompson was 67... making his wife literally less than half his age. So when he was 32... she still didn't EXIST. When he was 40, she was 5. Kinda sick if you think about it.

He put the gun in his mouth.

Granted, it's usually messy, but that typically won't damage the face.

But he was deft with his death. "He did not destroy his face," Anita Thompson says. "He did it in his mouth. His face was beautiful. It was quick. It was not grisly or gruesome by any means. That's probably why he took that gun. He spared us a gruesome scene."

And who the hell kills themselves by shooting themself in the face?

Besides, the article didn't say wheen the family gathering took place. It ultimately sounds like it happened right before his cremated, so odds are the funeral home had already done its work on the body. It's a different kind of wake, but hey, he was a different kind of man.

Lighten up, Francis. Unclench every once in a while.

Oh, and also...

...first paragraph of the article...
The literary champ was sitting in his command post kitchen chair, a piece of blank paper in his favorite typewriter, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot through the mouth hours earlier.

Square.

A classic Irish wake is basically a huge party where the corpse must be in the room. One last big send-off for the dearly departed.

Best wake was on an episode of "The Wire." One of the detectives passed on, so they held the wake at his favorite pub, and the body was layed out on a pool table for the night while everyone drank and sang and had a blast.

When I gotta go, I'd rather have something like that. Give my useless corpse a hooplah before it's chucked into the furnace.

Hey, and "hours" is anywhere from 2 to 23 hours. Lot could happen bteween then. Odds are the body had been tended to before the gathering. If not, oh well. De-wad those panties, boy.

You've NEVER been to a funeral or a wake before?

Most people typically observe the corpse in some way and say something to it...prayers, farewells, whatever...people ALWAYS talk to dead bodies.

Of course I've been to funerals and wakes. I've seen people say final words to dead bodies...

But they've never thrown together a dinner party for one.

But enough of this....

WHO WANTS TO PLAY POOL?!

Jesus Christ, they sat him in a chair and had a drink. Quit freaking out, spaz.

Again, read up on an Irish wake. That literally IS a dinner party with a corpse. It's not unheard of.

Well I ain't afraid of die'n,It's the though of being dead
I wanna go on being me once my eulogys been read
Don't spread my ashes out to sea, don't lay me down to rest
You can put my mind to ease if you fill my last request
Prop me up beside the jukebox when I die
Lord I wanna go to heaven but I don't wanna go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand, put a stiff drink in my hand
prop me up beside the jukebox when I die
Just make your next selection and while your still iin line
You can pay you last respects one quarter at a time
Prop me up beside the jukebox when I die
Lord I wanna go to heaven but I don't wanna go tonight
fill my boots up with sand put a stiff drink in my hand
prop me up beside the jukebox when I die
Oh prop me up beside the jukebox when I die

I've read all of your posts on this topic and you really don't understand the guy. He was operating on a different level. You're one of those people who, when he doesn't understand the way another person lives(or dies), you decide it's wrong. Now you'll say well, I can think what I want or some other stupid shit and really....who cares. I feel there is much in this world you don't understand and I bet it scares the hell out of you. In fact I know it does. Now go ahead, surprise me and say something I don't already know you're gonna say.

A REAL man.

I don't know, I can't get worked up for this guy offing himself. Never really cared for his writing, and though I understand why a lot of people were so fond of his writing (if not the man himself), I can't work myself up to sucking his cock retroactively now that he's dead.

I have Irish relatives. The way they explain the Irish wake is like this. Life is difficult, miserable drudgery. When someone dies they're in a better place, so you celebrate. Sort of like you'd do if a buddy of yours got out of prison.

His wife said on the news yesterday, that he did it while she was on the phone with him. He said something about wanting to come over for some editing, then he laid the phone down, and she heard the click of the gun and a muffled bang.

Exactly -- because he/she "would have wanted it that way."

I have almost every one of his books. I've never seen anyone so obsessed with Richard Nixon. His one book is dedicated to him. He also never stops talking about his "historic 1970 run for sherriff in Aspen, CO on the Freak Power ticket."

What a great writer.

If you are a fan of Hunter's, pick up the new Rolling Stone with him on the cover. It has tons of stories about Hunter in it.
