Well lets see whats already happened between the Superbowl and now...
Raiders re-signed Jerry Porter, franchised Charles Woodson...
Pittsburgh released Plaxico Burress...The Skins will be getting rid of Lavern....ehh.....Coles.....
The Colts franchised Edge...
The Jets franchised Abraham...
The Chargers franchised Drew Brees...sucks to be Philip Rivers...again...
The Seahawks resigned Hasselbeck, franchised Alexander...
The Cowboys will most likely be getting Drew Bledsoe....
The Vikings were bought and a big deal was made out of that....looks like theyre gonna keep Rnady Moss though...
So....lets post all of the football "going-ons" here....

Derrick Mason, Samari Rolle, Kevin Carter, and Robert Holcombe were all dropped from the Titans roster. . . :(
Oh well, maybe something magical will happen with (a broken) McNair and uh. . .Drew? No. . .Calico? Nope not him, either.
Tough year to be a TN fan.

hopefully the Chiefs can pick up some defensive help.
maybe a Gary Baxter/Hartwell....or Samari Rolle/Ty Law...if he becomes available. Fred Smoot would be nice.
i'm not sure how many good LBs are available, but the Chiefs could use a few (Bell)
and in the draft i'm praying that somehow the linebacker from Texas...Derrick Johnson..falls to them at #15

Lamont Jordan's most likely gone, which is a damn shame.
Said it before: Only reason Curtis got the Rushing title is because the Jets kept calling ridiculous draws on 2nd and long and 3rd and long, giving him a lot of yardage but not a lot of first downs.
The Jets RB coach is gone (the one who got into the fight with Herm during the San Diego game).
I'm watching the situation with Laverneus Coles and Derrick Mason. Both are possibilities, but both could also end up on the Eagles, with the insane amount of cap room the Birds have. Vikes also have a lot of room too.

Ok, the Steelers really need to sign themselves a really good corner, maybe law or rolle. This is 100% unlikely for many reasons, mainly that they dont generally look to free agency for help, and that they refuse to aknowledge the need for a big, physical secondary.
Chad Scott is good, but still kinda shakey. The rest of the corners really benefitted from the pass rush, but in the games where the d-line had trouble (playoffs), the corners really struggled.
The Steelers also really need a tall WR. They have Hined who is an awesome, scrappy WR, Randel-El who is fast as hell, and a couple guys like Lee Mays who have caught passes, sometimes big passes, but havent had the chance to show if they can be more than a #3 or #4 reciever.
As far as some of the other big-name free agents, expect Brees to be traded. The compensation that the Chargers will recieve will inlcude a 1st round pick. That would give them three 1st rounders this year. Stupid, stupid Giants.
Woodson will probably be traded as well. Agreed to the one year tender fromt the Raiders. The Raiders desperately need to dump salary, especially with Moss on board. Woodson was probably scared that he wouldnt be able to make that kind of money on the open market, so he took the offer from the Raiders.
The Colts should not have franchised Edge. I know hes fucking awesome, probably the best RB in the league right now, or at least one of the most valuable. However, something like 70 or 80% of the Colts' salary is going to be in three players, all on offense. Mungro and the other guy, who i cant think of right now, have proved that they can perform in the absence of Edge. The Colts would be smart to try and trade Edge, that way they get some players/picks/cash in return for losing him. Unfortunately for Colts fans, they will probably resign him, and ensure that this team will not win a championship for the forseeable future.
Travis Henry looks like he'll be traded to Arizona. Good move for 'Zona, but Henry does have a tendancy to fumble. Miami is also in the running, but they may try to go after Shaun Alexander or Edge.

Steelers yesterday released Chad Scott and Jay Riemersma. So now, the Steelers starting corners are Willie Williams and DeShea Townsend. Not good. They also have Ricardo Colclough, their 2nd round choice from last year. May bo good, may not. I'd really love it if they could sign one of the corners on the market right now. Rolle or Smoot perhaps.
With the loss of Riemersma, we now lose what could possibly be the longest TD connection in the history of the sport at any level: Roethlisberger to Riemersma.
Also, Larry Foote just signed a 5-year deal which means that Kendrell Bell probably wont be coming back. He's and awesome MLB, especially in the 3-4, but he has only played one full season, his rookie one. Hopefully he can stay healthy for whichever team he signs with, unless he signs with another AFC North team.

No they don't.
And as far as Housmansnsdbsajdafnjndflsad is concerned, I hope we get him. He's about as tall as Burress, but much faster. Being a Steelers fan, I've seen him play a lot and he really is good. I'll remember how to spell his name after he gets signed. Until then, I'll just run my fingers along the key board.
Also, I've heard that the Steelers are looking at a coulple guards. I think thats a mistake. They have a great line right now, and unless they are expecting some to retire soon or get cut, it would be a foolish way to spend money. They need corners. BAD. Maybe Ken Lucas, or the guy from the Browns. Probably won't command the huge numbers but would be a huge improvement.
Also, I really want them to get Heath Miller in the draft. He's by far the best TE in the draft. Hopefully he'll be around at 30, but i doubt it. Maybe they can trade up for him.

Peirce to the Giants (http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm)
PIERCE POISED TO SIGN WITH GIANTS
The NFC East linebacker shuffle will continue.
In past years, guys like Jeremiah Trotter and Jessie Armstead jumped from one NFC East squad to another, with both coming to the Redskins.
This time around, the linebacker is walking from Washington to New York.
A league source tells us that the Giants soon will sign free-agent linebacker Antonio Pierce to a six-year contract worth up to $25 million.
Pierce, an undrafted free agent signed by the Redskins in 2001, had 112 tackles, one sack and two interceptions in 2004, his fourth season as a pro. He is generally considered to be the top linebacker available in free agency this year.
If its true thats a very good pick up by the Giants.

I think it's a horrible signing. Pierce had one great year, in a contract year, and now he's moving to a much different, much worse defense. He just seems like one of those guys who will flounder without a top notch defensive coordinator like he had in Washington with Gregg Williams.

The Eagles kept Jeremiah Trotter at $15 Million over 5 years and we held onto Hugh Douglas as well. I just hope the Eagles hold onto Ike Reese and Keith Adams to keep the core of our defense together. Apparently Ken Dilger was contacted to fill the Tight End void since it looks like Chad Lewis may retire.
The Bengals held onto TJ Houshmandzadeh for $13 Million over 4 years. Glad the receiving core is staying together.
Is Tom Brady signing longterm with the Patriots going to screw them up as far as the cap goes? Or with the guys they have lost was it to free up cap space for a Brady signing.
I am really hoping the Cowboys get Freddie Mitchell somehow. He will get his ass either cut or traded and he will be fun to have come back and boo the piss out of.

They didn't. Effectively, from this deal, the Jets got Coles and Dewayne Robertson, because he was the draft pick the Jets got in the 2003 draft, since Coles was an RFA. (Jets had a pick and traded up with the Bears to get Robertson)
Besides, Jerricho Cotchery has explosive speed and can run routes. Moss cannot.
Look, I like this deal a lot. I badmouthed Coles when he took the money and ran, but Coles has a good relationship with Chad, and if the Putzier deal comes through, Chad will have three REALLY good targets to throw at.
Besides, Moss only had 100 more yards REC and one more TD than McCareins last year. It's not a HUGE loss.

The offense was based almost entirely on the running game and short yardage passing. If Coles does have a good year, it wont necesarilly be because hes better than Moss, but more because they got a new OC and system put in place.

I am not disagreeing that Moss is a fast as hell player.
However.
Coles is taller than him, has better hands than him, and can run routes.
Cotchery will now take the load of all KR/PR returns.
I don't see the problem here.
And BTW - from a longer term consideration, the deal is smart as hell. Moss's deal is shorter than the one Coles has.
moss is a great weapon, but the jets dont have a QB with a big enough arm to use him right
I'm sorry, I must have imagined that bomb in the San Diego game to Moss - a pass that was 90 percent in the air.
I don't understand why people always parrot that Pennington doesn't have arm strength - he doesn't throw a LOT of bombs, but he DOES throw them.

Absolutely. And again, the reason he doesnt throw long passes isnt because he cant, but because of the conservative nature of the now Bucaneers QB coach, Paul Hackett.

FUCK YOU ERNIE ACCORSI.
Accorsi is nothing but a clone of George Young. I mean, say what you want about how much Young did for the Giants and the NFL in general, and may he rest in peace, but he was not a fan of free agency & therefore at times just pretended it did not exist.
There were years that the Giants didn't sign a single player in the off season other than the ones they drafted. And Accorsi is a pupil/protege of Young. I nearly fainted when they went out & signed Kurt Warner...not that he was a a stud free agent, but I don't hink I had ever seen the Giants bring in a "big name," whether or not they had made a name for themself several years prior or not.
I should have known at the time it was because they intended to go out & mortage the franchise for the next few drafts to bring in a another QB.
Anyway...since my boycot of ESPN is still ongoing (and will only be stronger during March Madness), has there been any more news about the Giants talkiong to Burress? Or did he go sign with Baltimore?

Eh they still have no defense
they are my favorite team, but the Cheaps are driving me insane this offseason. they have money to spend and obvious needs on defense. how they haven't signed a corner is mind boggling to me. they had Rolle if we wanted to, but we had to piss him off by reporting the spine thing, so he goes to the Ravens. Didn't even bring Smoot in...nor Baxter. Surtain is still available via trade and so is Law, but if we won't give Rolle the money, why would they give it to them.
and then there is Hartwell...who i think is just as good or better then Bell, but no thats to easy. so we let him leave town and sign the soon to be injured again Bell.
Chiefs need a safety, but let Dwight Smith sign with the Aints. Darren Sharper should become available, but the Chiefs won't sign him either.
the offseason had so much potential for signing players that could improve the Defense and put the Chiefs back in the playoffs, but so far its been as disappointing as last regular season was.

Thanks for the info, Kev.
I actually read somewhere today that if no one steps up their offers, Plax will push to sign (wherever) for one year & re-try free agency after the season again. I hope the NY offer is enough to make him sign multi-year because if he is a Giant I fully expect him to make a lot of catches next year. And it would suck to see him do that & then just walk away.

Its all posturing Cripps. Even if he gets less from us he will still sign because he will make up more of the difference with endorsements and those things. The agent has to say things to get the Giants to give more. Unless the Giants offer like 21 which they are now and Minni decides to give him 30 i think he is signing here.

Kerry Collins was recycled, damaged goods when the Giants signed him. Yes, he eventually played like a superstar, but his signing was not a huge FA acquisition at the time.
Herman Moore, as you said, was done.
Carlos Emmons was really only a "big" signing if you were an NFC East fan. Sure, he was the Eagles defensive player of the year, but their defense didn't exactly have a huge year & he was coming off injury. I think as he continues to get & stay healthy he'll become a big signing, but I think getting a banged up Kendrell Bell this year would have been a bigger signing than Emmons was last year. Emmons kinda fell into our laps.
Barrett Green..."ended up sucking." No argument.

OK, superstar might be a bit much, but in 2000, '01 & '02 he threw for 3600-4100 yards, around 20 TDs per year, etc. For me, in looking at a NY Giants QB, that was unbelievable. I think the last Giants QB to throw for 4000 yards was Phil Simms in '84.
Anyway, the point was, he wasn't a big signing at the time, so I guess I went about proving my own point in a retarded way.

What kind of dick/head case must this guy be? Seems like Pitt didn't even want to deal with him, the Giants need a WR badly & passed on him, and he's already said the market wasn't giving him anywhere near what he wanted. I thought he had put the crap from his early career behind him, but maybe behind the scenes he's still a nut & no one wants to take a chance after a 35 reception season. Too bad, I was really getting to like the idea of Eli/Tiki/Shockey/Amani/Plax.

meanwhile last year, they got rid of a solid NFL QB and what woulda been 2 very solid first round picks to get a big name young QB. to win games....no, to get people excited and spending money on the giants again.

IT MAKES PLENTY OF SENSE TO OVERPAY WHEN YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. first off, they werent really overpaying, it was a deal akin to what he should have been offered. they SHOULDVE overpayed because now they are fucked.

Actually i understand the salary cap really well, and it seems to me you resort to namecalling and childish behavior when you have no real point to make.
1. Lets see receivers on the free agent market who are better then Plexico - Mushin (who although better is older, and won't match last years numbers) - did the giants make a move for him no.
2. Derrick Mason - a perfect fit for the Giants (again an older guy) who is never hurt and was the consumate professional again did the giants make a move for him, no.
So you may say, those are the top of the list guys what else is there:
1. Laverneus Coles could have been had in a trade (but with toe problems i can see why they didn't enter into that)
2. Rod Gardner who is basically a carbon copy of Plexico - big body big potential, but lacks concentration, doesn't block well down field and has about the same ability to catch the ball 50/50. Can be had from the Redskins for basically a 4th round pick. And his cap number isnt that big and he doesn't have the swollen head.
3. David Patten - who signed for about 13 million and 3.5 million signing bonus over six years now im no capologist but even if he plays 3 years his cap hit if he was cut would only be about 1.5 million (hey how about that i do understand the salary cap, but thanks for the update on non-guarenteed contracts in the NFL thats only the worst kept secret in football). A guy who averages close to 19 yards/catch, true a little unproven but he stays healthier then Plexico, and comes from a good offense, that spreads the ball around now 70 catches is a good possibility for that guy.
4. Cedrick Wilson - another young guy that signed for about 8.5 million over 4 years to replace Plexico. He had a decent year last year and should improve.
Basically you want the Giants to overpay for a guy who is only a #1 WR in his own mind, he wasn't even #1 on his old team and IMO Antwan Randle El is better then Plexico. But again criticize that the Giants aren't going to overpay for a guy who is only a #2 at best and doesnt stay healthy that is the smart idea. Don't trumpet all the other signings the giants made harp on the fact they arent getting a WR that no one in the league wants that makes sense
So learn about football before you question me on it, because i have forgot more about football then you can ever hope to know

you are bringing way too much of it into account. would i rather have Mush or Mason, you are goddamn right. Im goin by at the time they did this, they didnt have a fuckin choice. i was all over mason's jock when they cut him, but since Burress was the only guy left, you cant let him go, THATS the point.
plus you have to address needs. you have to know your team. The main problem with the giants is scoring inside the 20, just the thing a 6'5.5 reciever does best. Between him and shockey, Eli woulda been the fade fuckin master.
Patten is too small to fill that need. Rod Gardner is the last person i want on my team, redskin pussy who doesnt really care. we already have enough guys like that, and i know burress cares. his cares might be about himself, but name me a big time reciever who isnt like that, sans hines ward, the classiest WR in the league.
Point being at the time the giants were ready to sign a reciever, after addressing other needs, they had 1 choice, and they didnt make it happen. they HAD TO make it happen at that time, and they didnt, and thats not tryin to win football games.
and Coles, dont even talk about it, he would NOT have come here even if we tried, he wanted more money then he made which was already more then Burress even wanted, so get over it

NO, this is where attention is important. if you had followed me all along, i didnt even want a WR. i wanted them to keep hilliard, fix the secondary by signing FRED SMOOT, getting rid of a will and shaun williams for a good WR, and signing some oline. THAT is and would have been the best way to go about things.
I only wanted them to "overpay for a #2 who thinks he is a number 1" because at the time we didnt have a choice.
i agree with you about burress, i also agree about the potential for the other guys in trade, which is why thats what i wanted them to do. but the giants dont trade, and dont make sense, so when it came down to do or die with the last option, they died there too, and thats why it pisses me off.
if they had at least got burress, at least they are tryin. this off season looks alot like last, but WITHOUT A GOOD DRAFT PICK.
i wasnt tryin to insult you, but you were lookin at it from the start of the end of the year and i was lookin at it from just yesterday.
and btw, let burress be me me me and think he is that good. at least he woulda wanted the ball and tried to make plays, even if to better his own situation, rather then a guy like shockey who, on some passes, looks like he is returning serve in a volleyball match

and lookin at it from the end of the year, if i was the GM, smoot would be here, cousin would move back to the nickel, gabril would start at SS, and whatever will was left would be the number 2 corner. then, with mckenzie done, you coulda traded will allen, who had alot of interest, and shaun williams, a solid guy for us but a soon to be cap nightmare,. even if it was a trade where we got shit in return, it still woulda freed up money for the reciever i wanted all along, TJ Houshmanzada

I think the thing with CB's in free agency is a worthless cause. The lack of contact that these guys have now after 5-yards is the reason shut down corners are no longer that big of a deal. Champ Bailey is not that valuable now that he can't make contact, and Bailey got beat downfield only 5 less times then Anthony Henry who got 13 million from the Cowboys.
The thing with CB's now in my opinion is that they need to be consistent, but most of all be guys that can tackle, Deion Sanders can't play in the league now because he can't tackle. Now true Fred Smoot can tackle, but he himself was only the #2 corner for the skins after Shawn Springs who had a much better year then smoot. Plus Smoot has had injury problems over the last two years and do you want that out of a guy that got $11 million in signing bonus. Now i loved Fred Smoot here in DC but with rule changes the guy isn't worth the big money that CB's get. My guess is that all the CB's who signed big money deals will be looking for work in 2 years cause the rules make them insignificant now

In theory. Trust me, Plax was not as good as he should have been. Sure, he had a 1,000 yard season a couple years back, but that was an anomoly.
His role was to be a deep threat/back of the endzone guy on a predominantly run oriented team. And he bitched about it. He complained that he ony had 35 catches even though he played on one of the most talented teams to come along in the last ten years.
He felt he was capable of 100 catches a year somewhere else, instead of being second fiddle on a run first team. This guy just smacks of a whiny me-first player. I'm glad he's gone, but I would have loved to replace him with another big man instead of a speedy, smaller guy. We already have one of those guys. I really wanted TJ Houdsdn, snfkdbkf baad.

Burress woulda played the X like he is comfortable and Toomer woulda stay at the ZSure on the field that doesnt matter as much, but then again, you should never pre determine your targets anyway

Kerry used to do that ALOT. i remember once Tiki was WIDE OPen on the right side of the endzone. No one was within like 10 yards of him. And Kerry was locked in another reciver and did not even look his way and threw a pick or threw it away. I remember that pissing me off to no end.

What a shame, here's a guy who was the definition of a lunchpail player for years, he fights, trains, and plays his way to being one of the best at his position & more importantly a playmaker, the kind of guy who has a knack for the ball & always seems to be where the action is...and he has a stroke at 31 years old. Man, is unpredictable.

i wonder if the Broncos realize that getting every member of the Browns D-line is in fact a bad idea that has no chance of making them better. Courtney "I have a girl's name" Brown, Mike "i'm black under the white mask" Myers, Gerard "I get paid a million dollars per sack" Warren, and Ebenezer "yeah i still play in the NFL" Ekuban are not good acquisitions in the least.

Good thing MY RAVENS now have the best secondary in the LEAGUE and they should be able to live up to the lofty predictions......well my lofty predictions at least. And Jim Fassel can show stupid Giants fans that maybe it wasn't him, maybe it was the fact they haven't had a primary reciever since i can even remember.

I can't believe nobody picked up Ty Law yet. If the Bolts got him and he stayed healthy it would surely solidify their secondary. With the additions to the D Line (Castillo) and Merriman at LB/DE, a shut-down corner is their biggest need.
