As far as I know, Morpheus has Adware that can't be removed without removing Morpheus. I use winMX, because it includes no Adware.

do a cnt/alt/delete and look at your processes when you're on the internet and then do the same thing when you're off the internet and compare
can't tell you what to do if you find something funky but maybe you can strat ending the process for something that looks fishy and just note what you stopped... sometimes you can find out about the fishy process name just by googling or yahooing it

that's the thing. i recently got rid of a virus, and cleaned my machine out. i run bazooka regularly b/c the seem to find even the obscure shit.
here's my theory: my ip is being passed along b/c i'm dl'ing music. "the man" slows down my internet conection for a while, or possibly it's he files i'm dl'ing.

Big Thanx to Fallon.
Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore -- on the field, on live TV -- right after the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. In fact, they were shown in a closeup within 60 seconds of the final out. And every Red Sox fan is determined to pretend that this never happened, and that it didn't taint the moment even a little bit ... so it wasn't a huge deal.</center>

do the CNTL/ALT/DELETE and check the processes. key in on CPU % to see what may be using alot of CPU... if you find something then determine if you need it or not. if not then kill the process, make sure it's not in the startup, and do a file search for any related folders or files and delete them

You fed em after midnight, didn't you?
When you say your connection goes from 54mb to 2mb, you're referring to the wireless connection, right? 802.11g transfers data at 54mb top speed, but can throttle back due to a weak signal or interference. It may also be a restriction on the site you're downloading from. Some P2P programs allow you to adjust how much bandwidth is used for uploads and downloads, and there may also be a physical limit on the speed of the site from which you're trying to download, due to the way they connect to the Internet.
You can also download a program called "tcpview" (google it), which will give you a real-time view of the connections your machine is making over the network. It would show you if something additional makes connections that take up bandwidth when you launch morpheus, but I don't think this is the problem you're having.

You could try netstat on the cmd line and see what you're connected to as well.
Normally you'd have the sites you're on, any IM client, etc. If any looks odd, you should check it out.

Check your uploads. Whatever files you have on your computer is being shared by someone else. Even shit you deleted. See if you can adjust the uploads to 10 or less files at once. Should speed up.

You could try netstat on the cmd line
The problem with netstat is that it's a "snapshot" and it doesn't give you an idea of which program is using which port. I suggested tcpview which does the same job as netstat, but it shows which program/process has opened which port, and it updates itself continuously, so as you run a program that accesses the network, you see it pop up in the window.

1) What kind of connection do you have? Cable? DSL?
2) Run a speedtest at dslreports.com
3) Dump Morpheus. It's loaded with spy and adware
