Over the past week we have heard alot about Syria and Lebanon. If I am correct, Lebanon had a civil war btwn 1976-1990. Syria deployed troops into Lebanon and Still has troops there. Hezbollah, a Shi'Ite terrorist organization is a militia failthful to Syria, and they have members in Lebanese parliament. Now the lebanese want a total withdrawl of Syrian troops from Lebanon. With all these factors, This has turned out to be another hotspot in the Mid East. With US Troops stretched thin In Iraq and Afghanistan, Do you think our NATO allies will play more of a role for this situation?

I dont care, I just don't care, I really dont care. F U Howard Stern!!!!!

What the fuck do these dirtbag protesters think? That they can just take a country? The were there as "peace keepers" its not your fucking country.

Other placards read: "America is the source of terrorism"; "All our disasters are from America"; "No to American-Zionist intervention; Yes to Lebanese-Syrian brotherhood."

Bullshit. Get the fuck out of a country that's not yours then if the leboneise want to form a "brotherhood" with you they can. This is not a US made fight. This fight was started by other Arab countries who want Syria the fuck out of a country that isent Thiers. We were just stating that we agree that Syira should leave.

Of course. Blame America 1st. Just because we weren't perfect our whole existence as a country, we can't do any good anywhere.

I guess we can only hope to be as righteous as some of our squeaky clean International friends like Germany and Russia.......oh wait.

500,000 Turn Out in Lebanon to Support Syria & Hezbollah (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7023538/)

What's the point of this post, other than to be inflammatory to conservatives?

In your efforts to quickly slap down any possible enthusiasm on the part of conservatives over the spread of democracy in the Middle East, you're sort of neglecting the larger issue that it's BAD for Syria to continue to be in Lebanon when, a) most of its population don't want them there any longer and b) the U.N. has passed resolutions calling for Syria to remove itself. As well as the fact that it's a very, very BAD thing for Hezbollah to be in any sort of position of power whatsoever.

Suddenly we care about this?

We care because there's enough meat on the bone, so to speak, for us to be cautiously optimistic that the Middle East is changing politically to become more democratic. Afghanistan and Iraq are working to become democracies, complete with free elections. Egypt is passing democratic reforms (not near as much as they should, but it's a start). The Syrian government in Lebanon is dismantling, with the Lebanese hoping they can set up their own form of representative government. The Palestinians may be pulling their shit together. Though the religious caste in Iran still has all the power, there is a deep undercurrent of pro-democracy in Iran.

It's all very tenuous and could fall apart tomorrow, but in the here and now, there's a glimmer of hope that Israel may not be the only democracy in the region for much longer.

No to American-Zionist intervention

Man. Whenever I see that word thrown out as little more than an ethnic slur, I just stop listening to whatever point of view the speaker is trying to put forth.

This rally was much larger than any of the anti-Syrian rallies. it is very much possible that the majority do want them there. I'm not sure that's the case; many people may still be intimitaded by Syrian Secret Police still in the country but you can't totally discount that rally. That's the point of his post; to examine the realities of the situation.

Those people can be just Syrian nationals who moved there because of Syrian rule. If the Lebanese get it back they know life will be much different. I really do not care. But countries should not be allowed to take over a country after serving there as a peace keeper. That's such a dirt bag way in. I dunno somthing about it just irks me

I care a lot about this one because I have family in Syria. I've been there a couple times and I've seen how my family lives there. I don't ever expet them to even want democracy like we have it, I just want them to have a better way of life.

This Lebanon activity just makes life harder for them, and so would embargos and the like.

That being said, I know that it's the only thing besides military action that can be done against them and it has to happen.

Which ones?

Look, I think some people are taking issue with the overall tone of this thread...that NATO or the US or whomever is SUPPOSED to step in and help force the Syrians out of Lebanon. It's very similar to the situation with Iran...both countries are on the verge of "natural" revolution WITHOUT direct Western interference, and that's probably best for longterm stability. I'm sorry, I try to be optimistic about Afghanistan and Iraq, but their democracies should not be the models for the neighboring countries. Democracy by outside force should be the LAST resort, not the first.

The Syrian rule is more implicit, not really impacting day to day life but certainly governing policy (the Lebanese government is absolutely a Syrian puppet). Once Syria leaves, the real difference will be the freedom to say "F*** Syria" in public without disappearing in the middle of the night. Sadly, the Muslim population in Lebanon, a big majority, still have some allegiance to Syria for their role in the civil war, so I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the country wants them there. (although talk to any of the Christians in Lebanon and they've wanted them out for years)

They Syrian position bothers me because while they state their forces are there to protect Lebanons from offing themselves, everyone knows they are there to exert influence and threaten Israel on a second border. They should get the fuck out!!

Lebanese opposition movement calls, raises ante for Pro-Syrian factions (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&e=2&u=/ap/20050314/ap_on_re_mi_ea/lebanon_syria)

This is an encouraging sign but I suspect the battle is just beginning. Rarely do entrenched dictatorships just give up power. (The USSR and South Africa being the exceptions in my lifetime and there were unique factors and people behind those.) Lebanon does seem to have more secular influences than most other countries in that neck of the woods so that may help, as will the fact that Syria doesn't have many deep pocket sponsors at the moment. I hope the pro-democracy peeps find a way to pull this off but I'm not putting any chips on the table quite yet.

PS Is Yerdaddy still over there? Should we be doing a "Where's Waldo" type of photo scan for these crowd pictures? I always assumed he was doing a Citizen Kane/Zelig thing with his sig pics but maybe he's over there doing a real-life Johnny Democracy-seed mission & trying to turn Lebanon into a blue state. ;)
