A man being escorted into court for trial Friday stole a gun, then killed the judge, a court stenographer and a sheriff's deputy before fleeing. The attack set off a massive manhunt and chaos across Atlanta.


Its a crazy story, and you want to see what happens and you just know its not going to end well. In a dark way, you hope it kind of escaltes into something even more dramatic and hope no one gets hurt at the same time. Anyone else following this story?

The bizarre thing about this is that he took the deputy's gun and shot her outside the courtroom, and instead of leaving, he went into the court to pick off the judge and others, THEN fled down 8 flights of stairs. And yeah, I agree, this does have all the earmarks of something that's gonna end really badly...like some awful barricaded situation.

It is so strange to me that as a violent offender who had just been caught with a shank, he was unshackled, and only had one guard on him. A few years ago, I spent 80 days on Rikers Island as a guest of the NYC Correction Department on an assault charge, and any time prisoners were moved for a court date or medical appointment, they were downright surrounded by corrections officers and court officers unless they were shackled. And if someone was known to be a threat, forget it, they were smothered. This is just crazy, they need to have far better procedures in place down there.

Was watching it at Perkins during lunch. It just boogles the mind how he escaped the courthouse. Don't they have guards down there throughout the building?? The guy is like 6'1 and they can't find him before he fled the building. It's just crazy. I just don't see that happening up here with what I see how the security is in the Newark Court system. In the smaller suburbs, I can see that happening. But Atlanta is supposed to be a big city, so I'm surprised. I'll have to read about it in the paper.

And he is still at large! I read that after he took the court reporters car, he switched cars a few tims and maybe switched plates. Its like something from a movie!

Hundreds of law officials extended their massive search for a man suspected in a courthouse triple slaying as officials on Saturday tried to determine whether the fatal shooting of a U.S. customs agent was related.

The agent was found dead Saturday, and officials said his 1994 Chevrolet pickup, pistol and badge were stolen.

Brian Nichols, 33, was suspected of killing a judge and two other people at a downtown courthouse Friday, then stealing a reporter's car to escape.


How freaky will this be if this guy was killed by the same man. He would now have a badge to boot.

Most women correctional officers don't look like the ones you see in late night Skinemax flicks. Most of them were probably 125 pounds when they were 9 years old, if they were lucky. Shit, most of the female "hacks" I've seen I KNOW could kick my ass, and I'm a big guy. I'd lay money this guy still would have gotten away if it was just a lone "average" male officer guarding him.

Barry Hazen, Nichols' attorney on the rape charge, has said continuing with that earlier case would be a waste of time and tax dollars.


"He's facing four homicide charges that could carry the death penalty. In the best-case scenario, he's in jail for life. What's the point?" Hazen said Sunday.


But to me:

What's the point?

Is bullshit because he raped a girl! The lawyer is acting like he will be punished for what he did after to the judge and the others and her case isnt worthy of legal persuit in comparison and she will get her justice when he is penalized for what he did. I really cant believe this whole thing.

I cant imagine why Georgia has a law on the books that prevents a person accused of rape to walk around in a courthouse/court room without handcuffs. How do other states treat accused rapists? The day before he is discovered with jailhouse knives in his shoes and they still didnt think he was a threat?

I saw the interview today with the girl he had hostage and who had turned him in. According to the way he treated her it seemed there was a decent human being hiding inside the man.

Yes, he has to pay for his crimes but it makes you curious how his life had been before the rape and murders. It reminds me of an alley cat or a junkyard dog that's been beaten or neglected and they mostly know hurt and being defensive and there's that small bit of love dwelling on the inside that only if it was nurtured life would have been different
