I'm working in Monmouth County now. Can anyone tell me what stuff there is to do there? Or places to eat for lunch. etc. etc. I'm in different cities/towns/suburbs during the week so feel free to share.
It's kinda weird working where there are beaches, alot of flat land and water too as compared to the urban areas I've worked at where you don't have that stuff.
And if you know where the drug infested areas are or the not so good places......I need to know that too. I'm not a narc, so I won't bust anyone.
Thanks

Being a newby to the board I just want to say hey. As you can see I joined the board a few years ago, but have been a lurker. Long time O and A fan, and loved R and F from WNEW, and hopefully XM soon. Stay away from Asbury Park/parts of Long Branch and Neptune. Relatively bad areas.
Red Bank has a lot of restaurants, but is a bit trendy (trendy=slightly expensive) Good bars and clubs though. Decent theatres also. Downtown Freehold off of route 79 is also pretty nice. Of course you have the chain restaurants all around, on route 9 and Highway 35 along Hazlet, Holmdel and Middletown. I live in Hazlet so I'm more familiar with northern Monmouth. Let me think of some more and will post as I can think of stuff. Let me know what you like to do.

Hey! Look I caught a lurker! Sorry for making you lose your lurker status.

Too late. I go into those areas alot. It's not as bad as Newark, Irvington and the Oranges which I used to visit frequently when I worked up in Essex County.

That's what one of my co-workers said. I finally saw where the Stony Pony is located at. Now only if I can find the place where Billy Staples performed, does anyone know where it's at. Whenever my bro and I head to AC and we pass the Red Bank sign on the parkway.....one of us goes "Billy Staples!"
Downtown Freehold off of route 79 is also pretty nice. Of course you have the chain restaurants all around, on route 9 and Highway 35 along Hazlet, Holmdel and Middletown.
I ate at one of the chain restuarants last week for lunch.
Isn't there a racetrack somewhere in Monmouth County???
Any minor league sport teams in the area??
Isn't there a racetrack somewhere in Monmouth County???
Yeah, in Freehold on Route 9 and Route 33 I believe. I'm sure its on Route 9 but I'm not quite sure 33 is the road in intersects. I've never been to the racetrack, but it's right across the street from a very, very nice mall.
There are no minor league teams in Monmouth. The closest ones are the Trenton Thunder, the AA Yankee affiliate, and in Ocean County the Lakewood Blueclaws, the A Phillies affiliate. The Lakewood team has a nice cozy little stadium, just a few years old. They may be a bit too far south for you though.
Along the shore there a bunch of great restaurants and clubs, but you'll probably have to wait a few weeks for spring for them. Belmar is nice, and Long Branch is OK if you stay in the area around the college, but be careful, because as you leave the area it turns really bad really quick.
Chick-fil-A's are hard to find in NJ. If you are a fan there's one at the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, at the intersection of Route 35 and 36. There's also a White Castle across the street from the mall, and a TGI Friday's and a Chili's in the mall parking lot if you're into the big name stuff.
I used to work for an entertainment magazine based in Monmouth, and we covered restaurants and bars in the area. It's been a while, but I'll find some old issues to rekindle my memory and give you some suggestions. It was a free magazine called Night and Day. If you see one at a convenience store or a restaurant pick one up, it'll give you some ideas.

I work over there once a week and I always make sure to go out of my way to Mahzu Japanese Restaurant in Aberdeen on Rt. 34. I LOVE that place. Found a pretty cool Vintage Shop (next to Quizno's on Rt. 35) in Belmar which I frequent about once a month and there is an ok Comic Book/Toy Shop on US 9 in Lakewood. Besides that, I just kind of get in and get out. If you pass the Path Mark on US 9 in Englishtown, stop in for the Fried Chicken. By far the best I have ever tasted.

Red Bank:
The Globe Hotel
West Front St.
Not an actual hotel, just a basic sports bar. Food's fairly decent. My band gets together there before recording or practice quite often. I recommend the French Dip on garlic bread with provolone and onion rings. There's a cute blonde waitress with a nosering who pours a nice pint. Right around the corner past the going out of business Kislin's is a liquor store. There's an old guy with a lump on top of his bald head and a Korean woman who owns the place that works the register. When you're paying for a six pack, get a good chuckle at the picture of her kid behind her with a paperclipped title of "Too Handsome!".
The Dublin House
30 Monmouth St.
Kind of a quiet Irish Pub type place. Not bad.
Echo
79 Monmouth St.
It's a hip little bar with a good tap selection. It's got a Brazilian kind of theme going on as far as any food menu. Bands play now and then. Good chance to see some of the local really cute women.
Downtown Cafe
8 West Front St.
Basic bar, live bands, boasts a jazz/blues theme as far as music.
These are all pretty much within walking distance of each other in downtown Red Bank. There's some other bars and restaurants along Broad St. and West Front st. and the sidestreets off of them. Some coffeehouses, internet cafe's, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, music stores and other eclectic/expensive shops are all along Broad St. and Monmouth St.
If you want to see where Billy made his awful appearance, it's The Count Basie Theater on Monmouth St.
Broad Street might also seem like a deja vu moment if you've seen the movie Dogma. The View Askew office used to be on Broad St. and the church scene towards the end of the film was a recreation of Broad St. and the Catholic church on it.

Wow, that's an entirely obnoxious statement to make.
I think he kind of knew it was in Asbury, just wanted to get a fix on it. Kind of like knowing that the Empire State Building is in NYC, but you don't know EXACTLY where it is until you see it in person for the first time.

I'll jump in with my own stuff on Monmouth County.
Radio stations - WRAT - 95.9. Good stuff.
Absury's not as bad as it used to be. They have been doing a lot of urban renewal. I recommend...
Harry's Roadhouse in Asbury
There's a place in Belmar that's right over the bridge. The name of the place is it's address. I want to say it's 555 or something, but I can't be sure.
The Cabin is a fun as hell place to go to.
Jenkinson's in Pt. Pleasant Beach - great.
As for the minor league baseball - The Blueclaws are a lot closer than the Thunder. Just an FYI...
The local "meat market" bar is Bar Anticipation in Belmar.
BTW, if you want to look like a hip local, it's not "South Belmar" anymore - they changed the name last year to Lake Como.

The blueclaws do a good job during their season.
Kevin Smith has a comic book store/memorabilia store in RedBank called "jay and silent bob's secret stash.
There is also Fameabilia in Red Bank, huge memorabilia store.
Two really nice restaurants on the water are The Quay and McLoones in Sea Bright on 36. A little hard to get to but really nice, I take the wife and kid to the Quay for mothers day every year.
Although not actually in Monmouth, close by in Old Bridge is Arirang on southbound route 9 just south of the parkway, great Hibachi steakhouse and sushi place.
Freehold raceway is on local 33 just east of route 9. The mall is very good over there, it is on route 9.
Monmouth racetrack is on 36 in Oceanport. They have I think the breeders cup there every year.
The monmouth mall is at the intersection of 35/36, not a bad mall, but a bit small.
There is a Rascals comedy club on 35 in Ocean and a new Stress Factory in Eatontown...where you can catch Jim Norton, oh wait that was last week. (sorry couldnt help myself)
Your right, Asbury (which is gentrifying a bit, lots o'gays) Neptuen and Long Branch are no where near as bad as Newark, Irvington and Orange. What do you do by the way working in those areas, car jacking investigations??? If I think of anything else I will keep posting.

Stay away from Asbury Park/parts of Long Branch and Neptune. Relatively bad areas.
I'll agree that Asbury Park has some bad areas, but there's no problem with Neptune at all- it's like just about any other town anywhere else.
Jenkinson's in Pt. Pleasant Beach - great. Pt. Pleasant Beach is in Ocean County, not Monmouth
There are 2 racetracks in Monmouth County:
Freehold Raceway, a harness track located at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 33. Races from August to May. Is the oldest operating horse track in the US (harness or thoroughbred).
Monmouth Park, a thoroughbred track located in Oceanport, just off of Route 36. Monmouth Park is home of The Haskell, and operates from May to about September.
Pete and Elda's is one of best places for pizza in the Neptune area. Though Some people prefer Vic's in Bradley Beach on Main St. Both these places are "institutions" in the area. It's like a Mets/Yankees rivalry, if you love one, you hate the other.
Kelly's bar (Route 35S in Neptune near Boston Rd) is a good place for food/drink. So is Woody's Roadhouse in Farmingdale. When I did some part-time work in Allaire, I used to stop there with my boss for lunch. It's changed hands a couple of times since, but the guys that own it now are from NYC and are trying to introduce some NYC flavor to it. Still a good place to go.
Red Bank is like Greenwich Village- lots of "eclectic" stores and stuff, Secret Stash, Funk and Standard, etc. There's also aome "art-film" type of the theatres there and a few nice restaurants. Ocean Grove has a few little eclectic specialty shops, too, but they're all jammed down Main Ave, whereas in Red Bank, they're spread over many blocks.

If you don't get a joke, don't respond to it.
It's the STONE Pony, not the Stony Pony. And I know he probably knows that and just typoed.

I've ate at the Windmill Hotdog place in Belmar and Red Bank.
Perkins on Rte. 35 by the circle (not sure which town but outside of Asbury Park).
And I think at Almie's or something in Long Branch I think.
Also stoppeed by this pastry shop in Red Bank and got Canoles. (spelling) My co-worker said that they made good stuff there. I'm not sure what the name is but I'll list it if I pass by it again.

Red Bank has alot of cool stores and it's right by the water so there's a nice atmosphere when you're walking around.
Pretty much what Skidmark mentioned above,:Galleria for billards, Jack's Music, Funk & Standard and a whole bunch of cafes, record stores & vintage shops on the backstreets.
Monmouth County kinda sucks...

That Perkins is in Neptune. If you're sticking with "fast" food, there's an IHOP and Quizno's about 3 minutes from there in the Shop-Rite Center just west on Rt. 66.
Head a little further west to where Rt. 66 and Asbury Ave merge, and there's a place there called Beacon St. Food there is pretty good. I go there every so often with a few friends.

Some places in the county I've Shot:
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC1
Belmar ready on a Sat morning for the invasion; 3,000 in the Winter, 30,000 on a summer weekend
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC12
What used to be 'The Pit' in Long Branch. Condo City now. Debach on the beach back in the day...
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC4
Ocean Grove Auditorium aka the Hotel in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories. Watch him film this, dragged by Mom

Hobbymasters in Red Bank. Cool Models
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC10
Red Bank Cinema, to see the non-Octoplex movies
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC11
The Secret Stash. Across the street is Jacks Music where we all watched Chasing Amy being filmed. The old stash was funkier, off the main drag, better.
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC14
Palace Amusements before and after. It's all gone now. The Sopranos filmed here, and I saw Bobby D filming here for 'City by the Sea'.
http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/MC13
Spring Lake, looking north to Belmar. I'm shooting from the beach where in July 1916, a Great White ripped the legs off a guy who worked at the Essex and Sussex hotel. This after an attack on Beach Haven, the papers exploded, beaches were fenced in, and then the shark went *inland* and continued its rampage in Matawan Creek. Peter Benchley got the idea for "Jaws" from this.

I ate in this Bagel/Deli place in Matawan on Rte. 79. (Don't know the name of it). What was interesting about the menu was that they had 2 egg whites or 4 egg whites. A lady came in and ordered 6 egg whites (yeah she was hot). Alot of the people that came into the place were wearing sweatpants.....so I'm assuming that there was a gym or something nearby. They had 3 tables together in the center of the place with 8 chairs. When you enter the counter was to the left where the bagels and rolls were, the cold cuts were at the end when you enter and the coffee machines were to the left. Anyone know what the name of this place is??
