All I want are two versions of a song. Instead of being able to download them easily, I have to go through a big fat ass HULLABALOO at pay sites to download them.

Fucking weenie ruined it for EVERYBODY!

Am I late for the bandwagon?

To paraphrase ADF: After reading the title of this thread, my eyes slowly moved over to the author and then I breathed a sigh of relief.

Is it two versions of a Metallica song?

Is it that you want to download them free, and that's the bandwagon you want to ride?

Lars was being a huge dick about it but he had a good point, They'd like to be paid for their work. He just didn't get the point that even when music is purchased legally, must musicians don't get paid fairly.

They'd like to be paid for their work.

Ironically, they got a majority of their fan base from word of mouth and from people copying their work and passing it to friends.

He's still a cunt.

It is sad that some people lose sight of the reason why they got into something and instead turn into this:

He's still a cunt

I personally would have of added 'malignant' just to add a little more acidity to the words. But we get the meaning, and yes he is a cunt.

Ya know...if you have already legitimately purchased a huge Metallica song collection, and all you needed was two rare songs, I'm sure that even the mighty Lars himself would be okay with it.

Bottom line: There are kids out there who have NEVER paid for music. Ever!
And there are adults out there who haven't paid one penny for all the music they've collected since, say, 1999.
It IS theft. It IS a problem for artists.

Okay, could we get a little more detail on this, Alice. Which two songs are you looking for? Are they on a Metallica album? Which sites are you trying to buy them from? Are Metallica songs available on iTunes or that new Napster?

Metallica is one of the few bands that allowed fans to "bootleg" their concerts and like MST3k encourged fans to "Keep circulating the tapes!" * I don't know if they stopped this but I know they did in the 1980's and 1990's

I did say they had a point (I like to be paid for my work) but how is he going to buy that huge artwork unless we pay for those new Metallica songs with no Guitar Solos?

I have a bunch of Metallica song files. I'm not sure what would be "rare" but I might be able help.

Wasn't Metallica like the first band to have a "taper's section"?

Just a quick note before I talk about music sharing, Lar Ulrich is a CUNT. Period. I hate him mostly for Metallica turning their backs on their core fans by getting way too commercial. I guess you can't argue with their sales, but I can be pissed with shit like St. Anger and ReLoad after getting hooked on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

As for file sharing, I of course would want to get paid as a musician for my music. That only makes sense. Musicians make up the music, play it and put themselves out there for people to buy.

But there is a flip side to this. As a member of a small band trying to break big, I LOVE it when people share our music. We need exposure, and if someone likes us enough to put us on a P2P network or just burn a CD-R for a friend, that's great.

But Metallica and bands on that level are another story. They sell millions of albums worldwide, and the money can add up. The thing is I've always heard that bans make a majority of their money out on tour, not on record royalties. I mean they make some, but not that much. So if their music is that good, people will come to see them on tour, and the only people getting shafted at all are record companies. Not that they shouldn't get their money, but Lars needs to shut up.

Catch22.
When record sales are high...then the band gets booked into the big rooms...which means there are more seats...more tickets...higher prices...more profit for the band.
In the end, it all boils down to album sales. It's the only legit way to get some serious tour support.

I decided to pay for Napster so that I don't feel so badly about downloading DVDs and other video.

The problem with Lars' argument is that the annual profits of the record industry have actually RISEN slightly since file-sharing went "big." It's not a huge increase, but it din't go DOWN.

And the REAL BIG problem with Lars is that they only started to care about this shit when they got some heat for pussying out on their albums.

People still pay for music?

How quaint.
