Reefdweller and I went to Nathans today for a lunch date, and while we were on line to order our copious quantity of hot dogs, I se this older couple with what was apparently their grandchild in the next line and I look at the boy and he is openly running his TONGUE against the edge of the counter! I am taken back aghast and try and get the older couples attention and finally the old lady looks at me and I guesture to her to look at the boy and she looks at him and doesnt seem to register any alarm and I say, "he is Licking the Counter!" and she has a reaction like.. "What?" I say again, this time louder.. "The boy is LICKING THE COUNTER!" and neither she nor the old man make any moves to stop it, and so I throw my hands up in frustration and say "Thank God they arent watching MY children!".

Not to be a nudge, but my students look "normal," but engage in self-stimulatory behaviors. I have gone to Adventure Land on Autism Awareness Day with one of my students and his parents, and he always mouths the poles. When you first see him, he looks like your typical nine year old, but behaviors as these, make him stand out.

I have gotten comments and dirty looks when we take my children out to public restaurants as well. Until I explain that the children have autism, people tend to think the kids are misbehaving when they are doing actions like described above or having a tantrum etc.

I don't know about the boy you mentioned, but it is just something to keep in mind.

Regardless of even thinking that perhaps this child was or wasn't autistic isn't really the issue I think SR71 (aka my brother) had in mind. But rather the notion that an adult would allow any child to make mouth contact with any kind of surface that could be very unsanitary. I understand that it happens, however in this particular case this kid was blantaly licking the counter and the woman watched him do this and didn't even slightly see anything wrong with what he was doing.

From a sanitary standpoint it just seemed odd that it was happening, and even more odd of how this woman was reacting to it.

From a teacher's standpoint, we stop these behaviors when they happen as much as possible. From a parent's/grandparent's standpoint, life with these kids can be so challenging, so that sometimes you find yourself ignoring these behaviors. I've seen that happen with my own student. It is overwhelming and you have to be on top of these kids 150% of the time, lest they engage in behaviors mentioned. I see both views.

And for God's sake, if you are going to lick something, at least make it a tasty treat, like your mom's box.
