so it's been close to 5 yrs since i went to school for gd, and to be honest, i'm sick of it. for my entire life, i've been the artsie type. i figured i could make an "artist" career, but i'm done.

don't get me wrong; i'm not ever doing gd again, i'm just done chasing it as a profession. i'm looking to go the route of computer information systems.

so i'd like to get some opinions, especially from people in the field. come may, i'll start taking pre-requisites, and will hopefully be in a grad program within a year.

is it worth it? has the bubble burst? i'd just like some feedback.l

There is def. work to be had. maybe you can learn PHP and mySQL and parlay your art abilities with your new knowledge of web database and scripting to make some sick websites.

Best of luck, and if you ever need anything, PM me.

ah, sort of. the work i've gotten has been very VERY hacky. nothing that really thrilled me. plus i'm sick of making $$$ that i could make at walmart w/o a degree.

and thanks for the advice jp. by next spring, i should be learning advanced programming and looking into a grad program. i figure i can finish pre-req's in under a year.

M1, let me tell you from someone who did graphic design and then decided to try and make more money in business. I wish to this day that I could go back and do it over again. I was never happier when I worked and was paid to be creative. Now I'm miserable. Sure I make more money, but if the opportunity presents itself where I could be doing things creatively and enjoy it I will happily take a pay cut to just be happy doing what I love. I have a lot of regret over my decision from that standpoint. Sure more money is good, but I'd trade it for the chance to do what I loved again.

Just my opinion. I've seen your work on the board, I'm sure it's just a small example of your talent but I can tell that you are very good at it and you shouldn't waste that gift if at all possible.

I did just the opposite. I started out in college working for a finance degree because instead of persuing some sort of writing career because I wanted to make more money. That lasted two years before I was sick of what I was learning, who I was learning it from, and everyone around me who was learning it. I moved to journalism and enjoyed the rest of my college career and all of my internships.

I guess I am in the same boat as well to the point where I wen to school for 4 years for Animation and except for the animations here and there, I'm not doing jack shit in my field.

I have thought and am still thinking about giving it up as well but I haven't even tried to get into anything in the field as of yet. I was just thinking this all the other night as how I really have to apply myself and put myself out there.

Not too sound egotistical but I know I DO have the talent and I AM still happy drawing and making things move here and there even though the animations may be really weak and not have much put into them.

I know that one day I will have the Network Series geared towards kids and will be able to make people smile through my work.

Maybe even have the ability to change a life here and there as well through my gifts.

thanks all; i apreciate the kind words. i'm not saying that i'm totally done w/ graphic design- only as a profession.

just a lil history on myself- i graduated w/ a ba in philosophy and a bs in photo. did a yr at a tech school for gd, and have been trying to pay off my student loads since then.

i figure i can incorporate gd into programming, though i know it will be boring.

i just figure i can ofset the bordom with crystal meth and unprotected sex w/ hookers.

Alright....I have to share my history because this just hits home too too close. Eleven years ago I started going to college and against all of my better judgement and skill in the technical/scientific/computer/mathematic areas I decided that I wanted to major in Graphic Design. Why? Because I loved doing it and it was fun. Sure it was great spending class time in the spring hanging around outside and drawing while all of my friends we're stuck in lecture hall. Then after a couple of years I decided that I really needed to start working. So I took my art knowledge to land a lame job at CompUSA doing in-store signage and crap like that. Spent two years there and stoppped doing art in-store to do tech work, managed the Parts Dept, then Inventory Control/Loss Prevention. At that point which was about 5 and a half years ago I thought to myself "You wasted all that time in school....why not get back into GD". So I did. Took a pay cut and went back into GD for a Promotional Products company in an entry-level position. Wasn't band to begin with....doubled my pay in just under two years and thought I was headed in the right direction.

Well for the next three years leading up to today we had a pay freeze and I haven't moved anywhere. You know what the worst part of it is....every other day I get a call from my brother..."the computer guy", who makes more money than I do, because he has a problem with his computer and he can't figure it out.

Ain't that a kick in the a$$. You know...I love what I do BUT I'm tired of living like the "starving artist". And at this point I have too many other responsibilities in life that I couldn't up and start over with a new career. If circumstances were different I centainly would make the change given the opportunity.

I'm not trying to say that my life is horrible and that I regret everything I've done because outside of my current career status I'm happy with where I am in life. But I definitely have to say that if you have no other obligation then too yourself I would make the change now because further down the line it only gets harder and harder to make a transition.

hmm..... well, I have a BS in computer science, and I drive around delivering medicine to nursing homes for essentially peanuts.

I know all that programming crap, from C to coldfusion, and Oracle and mySQL, and it's gotten me nowhere in the past 3 years, except for the piddly contract here and there.

though I would advise to learn .Net if its offered. seems to be all anyone's looking for these days. And there is stuff for GD in NYC, I've seen the postings.

I wish you better luck than I've had. Then again you can probably sell yourself better than I. I couldn't sell space heaters to eskimoes, forget the faulty product that is my fat, useless frame....

Hook up with a comedian and start a cartoon. All the cartoons in my newspaper suck.

Best of luck with programming. It's probably the funnest thing I've gotten into in the past year and a half. I mainly do PHP w/ MySQL and I love a new challenge.

Seriously, I think you have some real tallent. Are you sure you're ready to give it up just yet?
