NY Listeners....Be kind to DC

This is not so much a mandate as it is a request...we've noticed a couple of pile ons from NY members on DC newcomers and we'd like to see that curtailed as much as possible. Some of these people are not as board savvy or witty as others, and its really not making us look good when you guys do it. Three strikes and your out rule applies from now on, when necessary. Of course we'll be flexible on this, as some of the pile ons have been borderline policy violations, but the obvious ones we're not going to stand for. We'll try to work with you on the ones we think are borderline, but really, if the guy's just dumb or not with it, cut him a break. (Or her...)

The point is this -- don't be massive tools to new members in general. There are new people who post who immediately stop posting because they get torn a new one because they aren't up on the ettiquette of posting on message boards. As a result, lurkers fear posting as well because they are afraid they'll get ripped into.

I know I only can speak for myself, but I'd like to think that most posters think like this:

We can all tolerate a question that shouldn't have been asked, a lame topic (we've all started our share) or a thread in the wrong forum. Such things are common to newbies. Most of the seem to ask questions, and they're answered.

But disrespect, name calling and general shitty attutudes from newbies will be met with insults, belittlement and general shitty attitudes back. I don't care who you are. Actually, old or new get that treatment, so they shouldn't feel special.

Now as for small jokes and us having fun, Snoogs brought up a great point. Good natured jokes to slightly mean spirited stuff is commonplace here, so any lurker should be familiar with it. If they're scared away by it, then they didn't pay attention or maybe they should have stayed lurking.

Having said all that, I've never head hunted new people, and I can't really think of anyone in here who does.

This isn't really a problem. New people who act like dicks get treated like dicks. No problem here.


Having said all that, I've never head hunted new people, and I can't really think of anyone in here who does.


It does happen. For a while there was a problem with people who would post comments about stuff going on on the show without fully explaining what they were talking about. Veteran board members would jump on them for it. Unless you've really lurked for a while, it's far from obvious that the membership is still primarily NY based, and as such, many are not listening to the show. Sometimes it is the dumb questions that get attacked. Other times it's the contributions that are, unknown to the poster, are old news to everyone on the board. The problem is that when people get it out of the gates, they often get scared off, plus the lurkers get scared off.

This is a good board with a good mix of people who have a good collective sense of humor and can handle good-natured barb. I'm just suggesting that we allow people to get comfortable on the board and familiar with the sense of humor here before giving them the business.

Well I won't get some stupid 2 page argument going. There's not much to argure about anyway. I have no problem giving new people some slack. In fact, I kinda like this new WhistlePig person. They seem OK and I'm glad the stopped lurking and started posting.

My only thing was that if I was getting attacked from some little dickweed with a small post count, I was going to fight back and not want to get yelled at. These kinds of people are usually just regular posters too scared to say what they want to with their actual screen names anway. But real new posters, I have nothing against them. But since Mikeyboy addressed this, we're square.
