Isn't it amazing to see how much our culture has changed since 9/11, in terms of impact and news coverage? In 1999, when Columbine happened, it was HUGE... a nationwide tragedy. Every channel was covering it for over 24 hours.
After 9/11, this is basically something we can shrug off. It's receiving not even half the coverage Columbine got, and as far as word-of-mouth... I didn't even hear about this until right now when I saw this thread. By TOMORROW, this story will be history.
Pre-9/11 America and Post-9/11 America are two completely different cultures, and this really displays it. Desensitization.

i guarantee you it is because it happened on an Indian Reservation and not in a 'white-american" town

I don't know if this was necessarily a case of bullying/teasing. From what I'm reading, it sounds like this kid was just WAY into Naziism, and probably had some sort of mental illness.

It's amazing how hate groups can draw in depressed (and mentally disturbed) people. If it's true, about this child's attraction to Nazi websites, it only goes to show how troubled youth will search for anyone who will listen to them.
As sad as this is, however... it's important to keep one thought in mind. As much as school shootings are terrible events, stats show that school is a safe place to be.
Fewer children are injured or killed by violence now, than at any other point in American history. When these shootings happen, it is the overload of information from the Media, that causes the public to think it's epidemic. In fact... it causes it to be epidemic.
Instead of focusing on "RED STATE" issues, (such as brain dead people, naughty words on the radio and TV, false threats from foreign lands, gay couples, and anything else that isn't politically ADVANTAGEOUS)...
Sorry.... no matter what side, of whatever fence you may be on, I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.
Sorry about the rant, and I'm glad the kid is dead.

Is Bush ever going to even comment on this?
Some brain dead white woman in Florida gets him off of his goddamn ranch, but he can't even say ANYTHING about a bunch of Native Americans getting shot. It's only the second worst school shooting in our nation's history...
Interesting.

Exactly. He got up in the middle of the night, signed shit for Congress and then went back to sleep, but nothing on the shooting.
And the Media is wall to wall Shaivo. Give it up. I WANT OTHER FUCKING NEWS. I don't CARE what your hot story is, fuck face.

It didn't happen in our Nation. It happened in the Indian Nation. Indian reservations are legally seperated from the US. If you want someone to comment, talk to Chief Big Dick. ;)

As callous as this sounds, it's not as if this is some great national tragedy in the way Columbine was.
Which is not to say it's a tragedy, but Columbine shocked the nation in that it was brutal and sudden and shocking. In the years since Columbine, there have been, sadly, SEVERAL other school shootings.....hell, you're in the D.C. area. There are school shootings here in D.C., it seems, every other month or so. Nothing quite as bad as this one, but enough so that stories like this sadden us, but in another sense we've become desensitized to them.
I also think, and this is my personal opinion here, that after 9/11, we've become somewhat numb to these sort of tragedies.

Oh, please.
He's the president.
He needed to take five minutes, tops.
There hasn't been a school shooting of this magnitude SINCE Columbine, so this idea of it being "old hat" is a bunch of bullshit.
This ISN'T just "same ol'-same ol'."

But as cold as it may be to say it, I think it is "old hat."
I'm with Chickenhawk. I think that after everything we've gone through as a nation in the last 3 1/2 years, that something like this happens and we all go "That's terrible!" and then.....
.....just move on without too much thought. The world doesn't stop like it did with Columbine, it barely even slows down.

Look, it may be old hat for "us," but he's the president. Like it or not, this DOESN'T just happen "all the time." Jaded as we may WANT to seem, this is not a regular happening. And even if it IS, the president waiting until TODAY to finally address it just just bad protocol. Even if it's just meaningless PR gesture, which is all he managed to do, act like the fucking president.
What, the next terrorist attack, Bush doesn't have to say anything because "it's happened before?"
