this has been happening for a few years now, and I was wondering if it was normal:

When you have a particularly strong cough, I see little black "specs" swimming around my peripheral vision. I'm assuming its some activity in the capillaries in one or both of my eyes, but I just had a bit of an extended experience just now, and it kind of freaked me out.

I asked my gf and she said it never happened to her, so I was wondering if anyone else gets this?

oh, and before you ask, I've never smoked in my life.

I get that, but they aren't black specks when I get it, they're more like multi-colored specks, like when you have your eyes closed but it's bright out and you aren't seeing complete dark.

Yea, I get more of the multi colored effect sometimes.

Try looking at a very bright area of blue or white sky, and look at the stuff that's either in your eye in the fluid on the outside of your eye. Not sure where it is, but there's something in there.

At least for me there is.

Plus, what's that crazy shit you see if you close your eyes in the dark?

They're definately black to me, when I first saw them, I thought I was seeing bugs, till I realized it was only in my peripheral vision, no matter which way I looked and they "move," almost like swimming, which is why I figure it has to do with my blood vessels. maybe I'm seeing my "pulse" in my eyes, but how healthy is that?

EDIT: I'm definately not talking aout the multiolored "burn" you get on your retinas that lingers after looking at something bright (like damned SUV headlights in your rear view)

One time when I was much younger I smacked my hip on the corner or a table as I was walking by. It hurt pretty bad, not horribly, but all of a sudden that multicolored shit blocked out all of my vision for a good 5 seconds. I have no idea why, I've certainly had much worse pain before.

i've seen them too... i always thought it was a dust particle floating around in whatever liquid may coat the eye. i thought it was the same liquid that a tear is made up of

they remind you of bacteria floating around under a strong microscope

There are a few different kind of 'spots' that float around in your field of vision, and for different reasons. When you cough, you've got a lot of pressure built up in your head, so it might be from increased blood flow.

If your floaters are like little clear balls, that is the vitreous--the clear jelly-like substance in your eye. When you're young, it's got the consistency of Jello; as you get older is loosens up to the consitency of water. If it loosens up in bits, the bits that are still like Jello float around, and you can sometimes see them.

If your floaters look like little grey or black bits, that is actually tiny bits of crap that is floating around in your eye, and can be caused by a few different things. Mine is caused by lattice degeneration, which is the degeneration of the retina around it's edges, where it meets the inside wall of the eyeball.

If you have lots of floaters or flashes of light or see them often, you should see an opthalmologist and get a complete checkup for 'just in case.'

I get that too. I am certain it has to do with blood starved portions of your brain and it goes away after your blood pressure returns to normal.

The other stuff you see when you look up at the blue sky, those bubbles and stuff, are called "floaters" and its really dust and air bubbles floating in the thin layer of tears over the surface of your eyeball.
I remember being a little kid and laying back on the lawn looking up at the sky and seeing the bubbles and watching them float by and going "Coooooool!"

It sounds like you may have what I was diagnosed with.
You need to see a retina specialist.
I was 1.2 mm from losing the sight in my left eye.
I was born with toxoplasmosis. A horrible parisite!! (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/toxoplasmosis/factsht_toxoplasmosis.htm)

Please see a Dr.!!!
