Article (http://archives.cnn.com/2001/fyi/news/03/23/alaska.oil/)

I saw this touched on in some other thread but i thought i would be nice to have it all by itself because I think this is a pretty big deal.(well most things in this country now-a-days is a pretty big deal it seems). But I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on this. I personally think its a bad idea, I mean sure gas prices are bad, but to wipe out a whole section of a preserve isn't worth it and considering, we won't even see this oil for maybe a good 5-10 years so it won't really matter at the moment...but i just wanted to see everyone else's take on this...

I'm against it because its going to take years to start pumping any oil from it and there really isn't all that much oil there anyway.

On the other hand, it wouldn't wipe out the whole preserve, just a part of it. And we might need all the oil we can get in the future. But I'd hope we put our resources into developing new technology and making it viable sooner.

I can definitely see both sides arguments, but I'd side on leaving ANWR alone.

Look, if Laura Bush's opinion on stem cell research basically amounts to, "we don't know how long it will take to find any benefits, if there are any, so why bother?" I say we apply the very same Bush thinking to drilling in Alaska for oil.

Besides, there's only one thing in Alaska that I want to drill...

i'd hit it.
btw, did she get fake boobs?

as for the drilling in alaska, i do not think it is worth it at this point. I really think we need nuclear power. Its really the only viable option in my eyes. Couple that with big increases in solar cell technology and we could become self suffient in 20-50 years. Nuclear power to create a hydrogen based economy, solar power to suppliment power needs. green times

I was waiting for someone to say that. When you llok at our options, nuclear is one of the best ones available with our current technology

Unless we perfect fusion in the next, oh, 10 years then we are setting ourselves up for a major enegery crisis.

Look into pebble bed reactors. Safer nuclear fuel

Bad idea. There's too many other globally friendly options to explore first. But money, as always will prevail and we'll lose yet another precious resource.

As long as its done in a eco-friendly way, drill you little heart out Prez.
But there are LOTS of alternatives out there (Hydrogen, Solar, Wind, etc) There's even a plant in the south which (no joke) takes the waste from the large Tukey processing plants and converts it into Grade 1 oil. Link (http://www.spiritofmaat.com/announce/newoil.htm) And the process can work with anything carbon based. Which is everything. Plus there been big progress in recent years in producing Hydrogen as well.
Whats stopping it is not some big corporate consiracy and their accomplices in Washington.
Its simply still a little more expensive. If prices hit $2.50-$3 a gallon, all of this starts to make sense. And with the way China's going we'll get there sooner than you think.

Totally agree with bulldog about the corporate-ocracy keeping oil based fuel in the forefront.

My biggest problem with it is there's a reason why it's called a reserve. It's best kept there untill we get a president with the balls to stand up to the Saudi Dictatorship, so we can still manufacture things and keep oil strictly for essential American needs, not for the SUV-buying masses

That turkey into oil thing does sound very promising, and it does work. Little things like doing that and making enough energy from the wate of a factory to keep the factory running. basically self sustaining factories where the byproduct is turned back into energy.

anyway i know i am not the first to think of it, nor am i smart enough to do it. but there are people who are. but bulldog is dead on. it comes to price. 6 years ago gas was under a dollar per gallon. now its 2. maybe in 6 more it will be 3.

At 1 dollar, no one was even thinking of other stuff for energy. at 2 we are considering. At 3 per gallon for gas, if some other form of energy was also 3 dollars but better for the enviornment and not dependant on foreign countries, then why not.

And Jerry, re-read my post. I think you misunderstood it. I said there's NO corporate consiracy, its simply economics.

Will the manpower to drill for oil in Alaska be supplied by Mojo's "Alaskan gulag" workforce?

Two great ideas -- that work great together!

I don't think it's entirely fair to blame the American dependence upon oil entirely on one party (although as this drilling legislation was passed during Bush's term he bears responsibility for it); there isn't any major politician in the nation, no matter what letter falls after their name, that is going to take a serious stand against the oil companies.

Which is just insane; you have India and China becoming more and more industrial as the years progress, which is going to use up massive amounts of fossil fuels and contribute significantly to the overall heat-death of our planet, but no one seems to REALLY want to put the funding into developing viable alternative fuel sources. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Alaska is a temporary solution.

Oil is now at $56 a barrel (a monetary disaster that Al Qaeda is more joyful over than any large causality strike) and even our sharp as a tack president openly admitted to the world oil shortage.

It's not that oil is running out (it naturally is of course but there is plenty left undiscovered as well) it's that our demand is far too greater than the supply.

India and China are getting into the mix. We Americans eat up an average of 25 oil barrels a year. They are significantly less, with China around 1 barrel. But as their taste for oil grows larger.. the prices go up... the peoples of their countries get hit with harder times and then the war starts.

China will be needing water as well in a couple generations as their fresh water supply in the Himalayans is melting away and becoming undrinkable as it floods farmlands.

There's a billion of them. They'll take up arms to provide.

So they want to drill in Alaska? The money put towards that would be better spent towards alternative forms of energy... but hey, it looks like they're gonna do it. But they're just delaying the inevitable.

Do you have ANY idea how long it would be before Alaskan oil would even have any effect on US gas prices?

Here's a hint...it's not less than a decade.

You know what, I'm gonna surprise a few people here and just say it.

FUCK ALASKA DRILLING. I am SO SICK of this visious cycle of reliance on oil. It's dirty, it destroys areas where it has to be drilled from and there's a finite supply. If new, cleaner, renewable fuels don't somehow move from being a "Whacky" topic people associate with Greenpeace Bio-Terrorists and moves into the realm of REAL DISCUSSION plus some R&D, we're gonna get fucked right through our National pants with no lube.

Hydrogen, Fusion, Solar, Wind, I DON'T CARE! Just because I'm Republican doesn't mean I want to live in a filthy environment, or doom 3rd world contries to do the same.

Hey, remember how everyone laughed when a while back there was that campaign saying, "If you drive an SUV, you support terrorism" ?

Yeah, I wasn't one of them. God forbid people actually drive something like a hybrid automobile instead of the fucking tanks we normally do which get like two miles to the gallon.

The really depressing thing about all of this is that we can bitch about the politicians till we're blue in the face but the simple fact is that Americans, in general, will piss and moan about the higher gas prices but will ultimately pay them and continue to drive their gas guzzlers, and put little to no REAL pressure on our elected officials to step up efforts to develop alternative fuel sources.

well, some of these alternative fuel engines don't even use combustion as the means of acceleration...

in my humble opinion, the government should be mandating all car manufacturers to phase out non-hybrid/electric vehicles within 5 years, increasing the tax break on alternative fuel vehicles and making emissions regulations so restrictive they have to buy them.

The time to end the reign of the traditional combustion engine is NOW. Hybrid technology is proven. You can still have your trucks and SUV's...they make hybrid versions now anyway...
