First question: I believe there is a piece of hardware that you can use to turn an internal hard drive into an external drive. I believe it encases the drive and provides a connection to the computer through firewire or USB. What is this piece of equipment called?

Next question, where is the best place to get said piece of equipment?

Okay, dumb question. I see from the links that there are enclosures made for 2.5" and 3.5" drives. From looking around it looks to me that the 2.5" drive is a standard laptop drive, and the 3.5" is a standard desktop drive. Do I have that right?

It's not the size of a man's drive Mikeyboy, it's what he stores on it that counts.

Mikey - yep...that's usually standard for both

Reef - I do believe that they make enclosures for DVD drives also.

I had no idea these things existed. That's very cool! I'm going to get the 20 dollar one for 3.5". By the way, I saw some on Ebay that hold up to 4 drives. They aren't exactly portable, but a nice way to add massive gigs to your comp.

Newegg's selection. (http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=92)

Just use the search on the left hand side to narrow it down.

If you want one, go to Radio Shack. My dad just got me this one...

For only $20. I have an extra 40 gig hard drive sitting around, so this is really cool!

This external case can be set not to boot, right? I have lot's o' stuff on my old HD, but also the entire O.S.

I think if you just move your jumper to slave you'll be ok. My dad got one too. He put in a drive that had Windows ME on it. It didn't boot on him, but he was able to access the photos that were on it.

hottub just connect it to your PC as a slave drive, and you should be able to pull all the info from it. it should just add on as an extra drive
