has anyone noticed that alot of people dies this week. johnny cochran, mitch hedberg, that vegetable lady, and now the pope. im actually surprised that hes dead even though i heard his health was declining. maybe we'll get lucky and get an english speaking pope.

Actually, Mikey, I'd like to keep this one open.
Let's do this like we did when Reagan died...this is a man who meant a LOT to a lot of people.  Let's use this thread for people who simply want to express their grief/mourning/respect/whatever...use the OTHER, older thread that Mikey linked to for any other kind of discussion about the late Pope John Paul II.

This is the only pope I've ever known in my lifetime so it will be interesting to go through an experience only so many people from other generations have seen.

I'm not so much of a religious person, but it's always been amazing that in no other religion is there as such a big figure head that stands as almost the "agent" of a deity. As far as I know, Catholicism is the only religion that I've seen to have such a figurehead.

A great man. The pride of Poland, a proud people often oppressed. Changed the course of history with his courage and conviction. And was loved the world over. The TV coverage has been relentless and non stop. The next Pope has HUGE shoes to fill. I'm hoping for someone from Latin America, but knowing the Vatican Beauracracy it'll probably be an Italian/european.

Tell you the truth, no f'ing idea! But according to the news, he was the greatest polish pope who was revered by millions. I in the other hand see a person who died of natural causes. Anywho, since everyone else is doing it, let us pray!

But anyway, I do feel bad.  I always wanted to see the Pope on the end of a rope.  I thought he was a fool.  But turns out John was wrong, and he was an OK guy.

He did help end communism in Poland.  He also bridged the gap between Catholicism and other religions.  He left a letter at the Wailing Wall apologizing for the Catholic Church's non-involvement in WWII against Hitler.  Was he perfect? No.  But who is?
